@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors everything has grown really well, but the deer don't seem to like my brassicas (purple top turnips) as much as I figured they would. Why do you think this is?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
@@swvafarmer brassicas are one of those crops that sometimes deer have to get used to. Deer will eat brassicas even before frosts. People say they won’t but they do. Typically after a frost they get sweeter which could make them eat it. What state is this in? Could also be a palatability issue. Did you soil test and all that stuff?
@swvafarmer
@swvafarmer 3 года назад
@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors I know soil test is key, but did not get the property until right at planting time, still added some triple 19. Virginia. It has turned off great overall

My food plot is still full of winter sugar beets and radish. Its been so warm they haven't been touching it. They just tilled the fields around my plot. I was thinking of seeding some winter wheat one the field wasn't sure what your take was on it. Wasnt sure if was to late to put seed out
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
David you are in New York right? If so it’s just to late at this point. You would need temps in the 50’s for a couple weeks to make it worth it.

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors I was just asking in general because some people say if it is cut and kept to 6 inches it tastes better to the deer and it's more attractive.

Thanks for the tips. Why rye is wheat is all around better? Why mix? What is better with mixing ? Thanks
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
I think wheat is all around better. People recommend rye because it grows anyplace even in acidic soil. Well if you are trying to grow it in acidic soil you aren’t doing it right anyway because you should be following soil samples and fixing it with lime. Rye is better then nothing at all. But wheat can grow pretty much anywhere as well and it’s much more palatable. Planting mixes is better because each plant becomes palpable at different times of year so you want something working for you year round.

What you think about adding white clover and medium red clover, and how many pds of oats , winter wheat and winter rye per pd per acre. Thank you
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Clovers would be good to add that way in spring when wheat and rye come back you can just mow it and you’ll have a clover plot if that’s what you want. I do 100 pounds of wheat, 50 rye and 50 oats to the acre

Nice video!!!! We have problems with nocturnal deer do you have any suggestions??
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Most times it’s because of pressure. It doesn’t take much to make them nocturnal. Deer feed 4-5 times a day so they are feeding some place and moving during daylight but on your land at night. Maybe let your land rest for a week or 2 then get at it again
@gnutersgnuters5572
@gnutersgnuters5572 3 года назад
So we have a 40 acres and on that 40 there is only 5 acres of woods, and the rest is farm fields we have about 5 acres of food plots. Is that enough woods to hold deer on our property? It seems the deer come to our property to feed at night then leave.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Probably not. 5 acres would be much at all. So sounds like they have made your property there late night food source because you have all that food plots. I would suggest removing some of the food plot and create bedding and cover so that you can access stands more efficient. That would be a pass through property. Deer won’t stay in 5 acres. You would have to be really stealthy hunting that.
