We can all see clear evidence of a climate emergency and the solutions are available. So why aren’t we doing enough about it? What if the problem isn’t just an environmental one, but a psychological one? We are frozen in a trauma response - the challenge seems overwhelming.
When all animals are under threat, we go into fight, flight, or freeze. This response is meant to protect us. But when we begin to believe that the world isn’t safe, it results in paralysis. Which isn’t going to protect anyone.
The good news is that we can shift trauma responses. Through noticing, shifting, and resourcing - we can foster neuroplastic changes in our nervous system, reframe our mindset, and create new pathways. New possibilities. The answer to dissociation and disconnection is mental flexibility, which allows us to hope. And to act. We can turn our collective immune system towards healing.
Dr. Christine Gibson is a family doctor, trauma therapist, author, social media educator, and innovator. She works in equity-deserving spaces and studies complexity and complicity. As “tiktoktraumadoc,” she shares wisdom in The Modern Trauma Toolkit - a book that nurtures post-traumatic growth. She believes that healing is possible, even in these times, and her company Safer Spaces Training helps people create psychological safety and manage their distress. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
