I'm an actual professional artist. Those CalArts sketchbook aren't really sketchbooks, they are a form of artwork, they miss the point of a regular sketchbook (what you have) which is to explore ideas, better your skill and generally mess up. My sketchbooks are all pretty ugly at the core, but they're helpful. They help me to get ideas out of my head, to get shapes right and to find the right color combinations. I know some artist work with sketchbooks, but they use the sketchbook as a canvas. (Marco Mazzoni comes to mind) But yeah, you figured it out yourself in the video :D

This right here!!! I approach everyone of my sketchbooks as a book of notes to refer to for my actual pieces. Messy paint swatches, pages among pages of gesture drawings and desperate attempts to understand the perspective or forshortening of a piece I'm working on, thumbnails, pratice with proportions because the struggle is real. None of it is meant to look pretty it is all just a way to learn and test new ideas or materials.
@yebkamin

I agree. Former CalArts student here, before they implemented this STUPID sketchbook requirement. I think it doesn't actually show you what a sketchbook should be when they encourage students to turn in sketchbooks like the ones you showed. They don't show their thought process. They just show me their ability to curate. Your sketchbook tells me WAY more about you. They are asking for basically a second portfolio.

Yeah, it's something I see a lot with certain artists. They tend to be more "left-brained." They work best with geometric shapes and linework. You'll find more male artists doing these intricate drawings than females. Not trying to be sexist, but it just takes a certain mind to create things like that. If someone can find a female who draws things like that, I'd be very interested to see her work. (I'm a female as well so please don't think I'm some misogynist)

Beautiful stuff!! This really reminds me of the last three days before I sent off mine. MAJOR crunch time. I see you referenced my sketchbooks and honestly, your approach is way more similar than you might think!! People assumed I preplanned and composed every single one of my pages in advance but that’s not quite true: I made a list of skills/experimentations I wanted to demonstrate. I’d refer to this list if I was feeling uninspired but otherwise, I’d just kinda go for it. Like you, I kept to one theme per page which helps create a unified look. And you say your stuff wasn’t organised but it was!! 100% calarts worthy. I know for me and my classmates, once we finished our books, many of us went back in to fill gaps, add notes, decorations, colour etc. This is what gives our stuff that “polished” well planned look, but it’s all afterthought. It’s not like we know what our pages will look like! I agree that sketchbooks are a safe space for our art and that Calarts sketchbooks don’t quite fit that category seeing as they’re designed to be looked at but truthfully, that is how I draw even if people don’t see my work. That method IS my comfort zone. Many assume I have a hidden trash book or something but all my crappy doodles are on my iPad or scraps of paper lol. Best of luck to you with your work! This was a great vid and you have a new sub :)
@ChromaMoma
@ChromaMoma 4 года назад
Hello Anya! That's a really good point about going back to fill in gaps and notes. That's something I definitely do as well! First of all, that's freaking awesome that you do draw like this in your regular sketchbooks because I certainly don't 😁. My main concern is these Calarts sketchbooks might be skewing beginner's perception of what a sketchbook ought to look like. Sometimes, I think it's better to forgo a nice page in favor of learning something as a result of 'ugly' drawings. I think that using a list like you, is actually a really good solution because that's a lot more focused on improvement/growth. Not that it's always necessary to be 'improving' with every sketch but that's an aspect of sketching that I find is often overlooked on RU-vid. Thank you for watching and joining in on the discussion! And welcome aboard! P.S I have a secret ugly sketchbook that no one knows about.

What made you think this was a good comment to leave? On a video which is not explicitly but certainly implicitly for people feeling insecure about their sketchbooks, what made you think that saying "oh, that thing you assumed I worked very hard on was actually much more effortless than you think! Hey everyone in the comments discussing what actual sketchbooks look like, yours may be messy and full of trash but all of mine actually ARE that perfect :) I left this comment just in case this video meant to make people feel better about their sketchbooks was actually achieving it's goal! uwu good luck!"
@Meppity
@Meppity 4 года назад
Jackson I think you’re misinterpreting what I was saying - My sketchbooks were one of Chroma Moma’s examples. This video heavily implied I have “secret” sketchbooks or that a lot of hidden elements went into the final book but that simply isn’t true in MY case. I was responding to an implication that is incorrect for me but in no way did I discredit the way others approach sketchbooks. I am allowed to defend myself and my *actual* sketchbooks. You put words into my mouth. I never said I’m perfect by ANY means but my sketchbook happens to look more “polished” because of what I stated in my original comment. I was trying to provide more insight into my artistic approach in order to demystify CalArts sketchbooks a little. Surely that’s beneficial to newer artists? If anything, this video would be invalidating the way I draw, as if we *have* to have a bunch of messy work to be authentic. I know, however that this video *isn’t* saying that at all but it feels like *you* are saying that to me. Look, I didn’t come here to discourage anyone and I’m sincerely sorry if that’s what my comment did. My entire channel is dedicated to helping artists grow and find confidence in their work so it doesn’t make sense for me to discourage others.

I can’t stay being creative for a day, at most I can only do 1 to 2.5 hours. I just realized that I’m missing the point of what a sketchbook really is. It’s supposed to rough and raw and just, you know, ideas. It’s supposed to be a tiny space in the universe where I am allowed to create. The keyword here is allow. I am to allow myself to create, develope, and grow, and the process doesn’t have to be perfect from the start. Sketchbook is just like a journal, but in the form of visual and images. I guess I just needed to be reminded that I am also allowed to express in however and whatever way I could, through sketches. I’m glad I found this video :) Thank you.

A couple of year back I used to fill 1 sketchbook per 1 or 2 weeks, it was really fun, now a days I pass days whiteout drawing. My sketchbooks where super messy as one (usually the right one) Page was a drawing or multiple ones and the other one (left page) was for thumbnails, quick little drawings messing with color, water color and various materials. I tried to had some clean sketchbooks with each page being a whole planed drawing, and that wasn't that fun as I hoped as I like to do full illustrations and all but having a full sketchbook just for that would stress me out more than making me have fun (too much Pages to look into) so I kept the sketchbook for messy and sketchy stuff and single pieces of paper and my computer for more finished stuff. :)

I'm just now finally letting loose in mine and it's a dream to just draw in them as you do. Not saying they aren't beautiful books because they are, but the videos definitely do not account for and glorify the hours, "bad" drawings, and off days that we go through when working on art or even our sketchbooks. And like you said, sketchbooks are safe places to experiment and study and learn! I hope your video reaches many creatives so they can absorb your wisdom too :,-)

Rly liked the video, thought I might as well share my experience for anyone interested.. (regarding the sketchbook for calarts, character animation) I applied to calarts (character animation) last winter and actually got in to start now this spring 2020. Regarding the sketchbook, I’ve actually already gone to a preparatory art school here in Sweden 2 years, I basically already drew a lot. And my “sketchbooks” didn’t look anything like the one I sent in for calarts. I litterally started on 7-8 new sketchbooks until I started on the one I sent in. Okay haha I’m not very good at explaining my thoughts but let me put it this way: In every sketchbook there are a few pages I’m like “daammm that’s pretty good tho” and basically that’s what I tried to do with that calarts sketchbook, just cause I wanted to get in rly bad lol. And also just adding personal things here and there (idk if that helped at all though but might help you “stand out”) And also can I just say I never thought I would get into Calarts tbh (specially seeing everyone’s sketchbook here in RU-vid 😂)

a sketchbook can be whatever you want it to be - unfinished, messy, experiment, clean, organised... heck mine to encourage me to draw different things I turned it into a comic. No real plot, occasionally messing around with different shots, and rough sketchy as all hell. For me it was better than doing pages dedicated to hands, dedicated to feet ect... because I'm also a writer it's teaching me to tell stories visually and it's been fantastic. You do what you feel like with your books! However - If you're trying to do it for industry purposes... make sure you show your dirty roughs! Your messy ideas behind your peices. That will land you more jobs if you can show your process than only a book full of finished peices. All design industries want to see where and how you find inspiration, something art schools don't teach you when you're there.... but damn should. Your art is beautiful and your process is incredible, the skills you have built up are spectacular and been able to see how you think through your roughs is super wonderful.

As an industrial design student, my idea of a sketchbook has changed drastically. A you pointed out all the correct points early on in the video, quick, ideation, visualizing your thoughts. But you didn't quite actualize those ideas, a sketch should be non stop. Limit yourself to a certain amount of time. For a concept sketch page I limit myself to 1 hour, which includes side views of around 10-12 sketches, with marker. Using pencil is a big mistake, you have the freedom to erase. Don't stop sketching, the second you stop is when you start thinking. Keep moving, ideas come and go instantaneously. At the end you will have a large page of ideas, and more than likely the ones that seemed good in your head, when on paper, are shit. In industrial design the quality of the sketch doesn't matter as much as the idea. But there is a certain charm to the sketches. Just some of my views :) Keep sketching! Edit: I didn't really clarify my main point. Your sketchbook should not be perfect. Nowhere near infact, it should be an ugly piece of shit when you look back through it. It should be (I shouldn't say 'should be', what expert am I?) just a collection of quick bullshit. This is why sketchbooks are inspiring, they are just to SKETCH in, not to make a damn masterpiece. A regular assignment for my field, is to come back the next class with 100 pages of sketches, do you think they expect them to be perfect? No, its a sketch.

I learned if you skip 5-10 pgs in then start sketching then it's easier mentally for me to relax

There's a difference between a sketchbook and a Calarts application sketchbook. Sketchbooks are messy, they're for trying out new ideas, warming up, getting through a block. Barely any pages have actual full artwork on them. Calarts sketchbooks are filled with finished artwork front to back, every page, to show your ability to work in different media, be creative, tell stories with your art and show the jury you're what they're looking for.

the whole reason i never applied to calarts was the aketchbook videos. They're such idealized versions of what people think sketchbooks are supposed to look like and it so discouraging.

Mmm-hmm yep... Have I subscribed to like ten artist RU-vidrs in the past week instead of creating my own art? Yes. Am I going to do it again just because the entire video--especially the outro--was very inspiring and also well made? Yes, yes I am.
