Always carted stuff to the tip in car. Cleared a cottage my parents rent out. This time ordered a 12 yard skip. It was brilliant fun filling it and so easy to get rid of piles of rubbish. Cost £400 but best money I spent. Doing more work for my parents and skips are my new “tool”. Dad (88) and I burnt wood etc which saved a load of space. Love your videos.

@Zepheriah

An older friend tells a story about doing that: he’d demolished a brick outhouse, and realised the pile of rubble was bigger than the skip. So he carefully paved the bottom of the skip with bricks, poured mortar chunks into the gaps, and continued bricklaying up to near the top of the skip, then piled some odds and ends on top. The skip truck couldn’t budge it at all; it just lifted itself into the air. They had to go get their biggest vehicle, and they were NOT pleased.

@@Zepheriah I did something similar when I demolished my concrete block garage. Laid all the blocks neatly in rows in the skip, with the final loose bits spread in the gaps. 8 yard skip nicely filled to the top. Not only did the skip lorries front wheels well and truly come off the ground when it tried to lift the skip, but one of the rear stabilising legs cracked straight through our ~3" concrete drive. Driver had to use a spreader plate to stop the rear leg completely sinking through the concrete and sub-base. Drive has due to be replaced anyway, so it still felt like we got our monies worth.

When the lorry which comes to pick it up can perfectly drive his lorry to the skip but after picking it up sinks tyre height deep in the pavement when trying to get of the footpath, and then needs another lorry driver to get there with a tow cable to pull him out, and leaves giant rubber streaks on the road while trying to do so.

Dig a hole in the garden, Chuck all the wood in, cover it with the dirt and set it on fire. It’ll slow burn for a while with very little smoke and the ground will be super fertile afterwards.
@gvanvoor
@gvanvoor 3 года назад
Here (Belgium) the price of the skip varies depending on what you put into it. Brickwork is the cheapest; also adding plaster like stuff or wood will make it more expensive; companies with a website usually list what is allowed in which tier. Asbestos is usually not allowed (when it is it’s probably very pricey). Skips are usually brick shaped here with double doors.
@GosforthHandyman
@GosforthHandyman 3 года назад
Interesting! Same here with asbestos, totally banned. Same with plasterboard for a lot of skip companies! 👍
@disklamer
@disklamer 3 года назад
Good pointers all. Covering the surface is probably #1 that people overlook... Sorting the rubble in piles as you go saves a ton of time down the pike. To squeeze more into the skip, I'd toss in small rubble (alternating layers) over the loose garden stuff, get another half ton in there. A wheelbarrow + ramp (if you can get the right skip) really makes your life infinitely easier. Also, you can never have too many buckets. Lastly, you can rent 1m3 skip bags, not too dire and a good thing to have handy, so you can keep your lot tidy while you work.
@GosforthHandyman
@GosforthHandyman 3 года назад
The skip bags are great but very expensive, which I never understand since the running costs of a skip-bag business must be way lower than an actual skip business. 🤔😁

I'm the one who takes things back out of skips, not puts things into them. Worth trying the 'Free to collector' for the wood and hardcore and you'd still have 1/2 of the skip yet to fill! Also worth checking if the Local Authority offer a 'Garden waste' collection too as this would sort all of your brambles etc. Here we have a service which is £30 per year and they collect a green wheelie bin every two weeks, so if you can be patient in disposing of things then a month or two of this will clear a good section of ground. I found I could fit two 1 tonne bags into our green wheelie bin, so they swallow a lot of volume with the help of a sledgehammer to squash things a little. :)
@C4sp3r123
@C4sp3r123 3 года назад
I prefer the jump up and down technique ;-) but yes green bins can be well worth it also if the neighbours have them a friendly ask and they often let you top up their bins once they have them out for collection. I had a mountain of stuff to clear when I moved in and piled it up and spent time listening to podcasts and cutting it all up into small lengths and it is amazing how much you can get in the bins.
@GosforthHandyman
@GosforthHandyman 3 года назад
Unfortunately the garden waste collection service here (for bulky stuff) is useless and takes forever. I do have the £40/year brown bin though. You have a GREEN wheelie bin for garden waste? What colour is your normal waste bin?? Wish they would standardise this stuff. Up here... Green = normal waste Blue = recycling Brown = garden waste 👍
@videogalore
@videogalore 3 года назад
@@GosforthHandyman Indeed, although I think our colours make more sense :) Black = Landfill Green = Garden Waste Our Council collect each on alternate weeks, so I managed to clear this garden (7ft brambles across the whole site) two weeks at a time. I appreciate that it wouldn't suit most builders etc as they are working to a timescale, but for DIY/homeowners it's ideal if you're patient.

I’d have kept all the wood out of the skip. As long as they don’t have woodworm you can reuse for other jobs, studding out, building a treehouse, etc. And what doesn’t get used can go in a wood burner. Our wood burner is only secondary heating in the lounge so not used every day but we’ve never had to buy any wood for it, always offcuts from projects, pallets, window frames, etc that we can burn. Does take up a lot of room with 1-ton bags cover in tarpaulin down the end of the garden though

That's how I do it...except I would have put the rubble under the timber, and with timber as expensive as it is, recycle and re use is my motto. Back in the early nineties, my mate used to do maintenance work. He got a job demolishing a block built shed on the roof of the YWCA building at Kings Cross in London. I helped out as safety man, to keep people away from the rubbish chute and empty the waste into the skip( the chute was in a courtyard, and the skip over the road in a layby). On that first day, i found myself constantly shooing away the locals, who all thought they could get rid of unwanted furniture and fridges etc in the 'free skip'. We half filled it on day one, and when we arrived next morning, some so and so had filled it to overflowing with rubbish. A new one was ordered and we carried on. After tea break I went up onto the roof to have a look, and found myself on a narrow ledge with a single pole for a guard rail and a 100 foot drop to the pavement below. As I stood there paralysed ( I really don't like heights), a large van pulled up by the skip, the doors opened and three scruffy blokes began throwing the entire contents of the van into the skip. I yelled at them, and they all raised their hands in the traditional two finger salute. Needless to say they were long gone by the time we reached the ground!

I've completed all of the skip-worthy renovations in my house, yet here I am at 00:30 watching someone fill a skip. My tip to add to this for if you've got rubble and loose soil or sand - layer a small amount of soil on the bottom, then alternate rubble and soil. The soil should fill in between the rubble and make better use of the space. The concept comes from the 'rock, pebbles, and sand' story. The first skip I filled using this method had the bottom fall out when it was lifted. It could have been an old skip, but who knows?

Nice job, best to sort the rubbish as you go like you did as it saves having to move it all again and makes the skip filling nice and quick. Sometimes it isn't worth the hassle if you just want to crack on with your job but you would be amazed what people will have off you if you put it on the likes of Facebook. Those pallets and doors would be snapped up in minutes round here, along with any of the other wood, people love it for their fires. The garden waste, I would, if you have the space in your garden, pile it high ready for a bonfire. People often don't like to have bonfires these days as it annoys the neighbours but if that is the case pile it up ready for bonfire night time and you can easily get away with having them then, or just do them at the end of the day when people hopefully no longer have their washing out etc. Also sometimes people will snap rubble up if you have it accessible, or if you have a friendly farmer they often welcome it for their gateways. Though sometimes the time v money relationship means it is just easier to get it all gone in one go quickly. On your recent video 'Diagnosing Damp Issues' at around 12 mins in you have some music. I looked in the description to see what it was and it isn't listed. Any chance you could let me know please? Thanks!

I would frequent the pizza hut or harvester and skillfully line my unlimited salad bowl with large lettuce leaves to first extend the size of the bowl and then fill with my favourite foods and then infill the gaps with smaller foods like sweet corn, peas and lastly the little bacon bits. Mmmmm

If you have a lot of the same waste, for example stone and concrete debris, or branches and garden waste, it's way cheaper to get a skip for that specific waste. Mixed waste skips are expensive. And get a tarp. A covered skip is too much trouble for the most morons who randomly dump stuff in other peoples skips.

As a skip Driver the simple thing is to fill as you like. top marks to the way you filled it. just to add you could have filled the rest in if it was my skip. I allow it to peak higher in the middle of the skip so long as it can be fully sheeted. Anything sticking out or loose can fall on route to the yard so can be rejected if its overflowing from the sides. Builders are the worst as they always leave bricks and heavy debris on top, over and above the edge of the skip and they fall out if not when collecting or exchanging then on the road as you drive away. When the load is tipped it is then picked anyway for separating the wood, green, hardcore, plastics, metal, etc I think 95% is now recycled. Our company have restrictions like no oil paint tyres fridges etc and mattresses are charged as extra because of the time it would take to pick apart the material it is not effective and thus goes to landfill.

Andy if I was you I wood ;) all brush/wood/green crap/shed/doors you name it, big pile and burn in no time at all. All the mot crap add in a pile as good for foundations. Id honestly add wire fencing stuff at the front, stops all scum coming to your house. You will be surprised how much scum come in the night. Also if you don't need mot then you can get grab lads to pickup for £150, sometimes cheaper than a skip :)
