In this video, we demonstrate how to fill a ATV UTV SxS conventional Lead Acid Battery and make it last. This one was purchased at Wal-Mart (EverStart). Watch how it gains charge as each cell is filled with electrolyte or AKA battery acid.
***Batteries contains electrolyte (sulfuric acid) which is a highly toxic and dangerous substance if it comes in contact with your body. When carrying acid or a battery filled with acid, keep it away from your body. Wear rubber gloves and safety glasses when working with the battery to keep any possible acid from touching your hands or eyes.
Batteries are also capable of delivering a high current discharge. All jewelry should be removed and other metal objects should be kept away from the battery to avoid shorting across the battery terminals. It’s best to use only insulated-handled tools when working with your battery, as well.
Initial Filling of your Battery
Wet cell batteries like Dry Charge batteries need to be filled with electrolyte (acid), which is dangerous to the eyes and skin. When working with acid, you should follow these simple precautions:
Wear protective goggles to protect your eyes. If you do splash acid in your eyes, hold your eyelids open while washing your eye with lukewarm water for at least 20 minutes. Have someone contact your doctor immediately for further instructions, while you wash the affected area.
Wear rubber gloves. If you splash your skin, flush continuously with lukewarm water for at least 20 minutes and contact your doctor for further instructions.
Once you open the acid, carefully fill each battery cell with electrolyte. Be sure to not overfill. Fill to a level that is just below the overfill line marked on the battery case. Once the cells are properly filled, replace the caps. Hand tighten only.
If you need to fill the battery at a later date, use distilled water to keep your battery cell chambers to the proper level. Keep your cell levels above the minimum mark and below the maximum mark (these should be shown on your battery case).
Charging your Battery
Both hydrogen and oxygen are emitted while batteries are charging. Hydrogen is a very flammable gas and oxygen supports combustion. Because of this, you should always place your battery in a clean, well-ventilated area when filling or charging your battery. Your chosen workspace should be free from anything that might spark a fire, such as welding, smoking, grinding, open flame, etc.
Important Note: If you charge your battery at too high an amperage, you may cause the battery to overheat and even explode. Please read your instructions carefully regarding safe amperage charge levels for your battery.
Initial Charging Procedure:
Once you’ve filled your battery with acid and the battery caps are hand-tightened, you should charge the battery with a low-amperage battery charger. For best, safest results, a battery should never be charged at amperage greater than 10% of the battery’s capacity. So, if you have a 10 Ah battery, use a 1 amp battery charger. If the battery is 5 Ah, then you should use a 0.5 Amp (500 mA) battery charger. It can take around 10-12 hours to fully charge your battery, so it's recommend that you use an automatic charger that will cut the charge off when the battery is fully charged.

This should have been outlawed years ago. The acid should be pre added at the factory like it is in every other battery in existence

Doctor Feinstone it's against the law to ship these batteries with the acid or electrolyte In Them. The batteries you get that are refilled are called maintenance free batteries and they are sealed that is why they ship filled

Another reason that it doesn't come pre-filled is that if they did and had no charge a few months of sitting around the battery would dead cell. The charge of the battery also prevents premature cell failure.

I like your logic here, I have one of these batteries I about to put in my streetbike and was going to do the same thing you did, however I have not had a problem just filling w acid and riding

Thanks for the comment! Yes, if you have a good charging system the vehicle will do the charging.

What if you don't have a volt meter to show you it's charged? I was just going to let it permeate for an 1/2 hour according to the instructions and charge for 12. I don't own a volt meter. I have a lot friends who ride and say keep it on a battery maintenance charger when you're not riding it. I have a black and Decker battery charger for motorcycle with a switch 6V amd 12V. It stops blinking when fully charged.

I have the same battery. Most of the cells on it(probably 4 or 5 of them) are at the lower level line. Does that mean I need to refill it? And do I fill it with acid or distilled water? Ive been having a little bit of battery trouble but it still works ok after a charge.

Are you supposed to put the red side cap back on after you fill the cells and do you keep it on while you charge the battery or do you put it on after you charge the battery?
@soulquesting
@soulquesting 6 лет назад
Joshua Bouley I kept the red cap to cover red rubber filler connected to the acid container because there was extra acid when I finished filling mine. You're supposed to put the clear longer tube on the vent hole and keep it there you can leave it while it charges worst case scenario you overfilled and acid starts draining out that long tube. If that's the case neutralize the spill with water and baking soda. Wear rubber gloves

What if you overfilled it way past the second like

Hey boss, so I filled mine to the top line, the one above the +&- lines. I filled it with the acid, all equally til I finished it, then they all started rising and I drained em with the clear line back to the level I mentioned. Is that ok or should I add the extracted acid back in there?

After its charged and ready to put in the bike and use it do you leave the vent hose on the battery ? What do you do with the red cover that was on the vent?
@MannyAguilarJr
@MannyAguilarJr 2 года назад
Get ride of red vent cap and attach vent hose to the battery if you have one if not it's good to get one. It looks like a 1/4" hose.

In the video he mentions that we should remove the vent tube block on the battery. No mention of whether we replace it after filling or leave it off. It would be nice to know, since mine came with no instructions. So replace the block or not? I do get some leakage out of a couple cells when it's charging with the vent tube block on.

Thanks for the comment. Out of many many atv battery replacements there has never been an issue living the vent tube off. Generally the vent tube is a must for automobiles with the battery inside the cabin department, for venting purposes only. Again thanks for the comment.

Did same thing on same battery but should there still be bubbles and air build up on the vent hole?
