Sand Bags are one of the cheapest but most important items on a movie production set. Without them, the portable light stand and boom arms would all fall over and injure people on set and destroy expensive equipment.
While they are very basic, anyone new to the craft has not used them and is unfamiliar with how to get them, how to fill them or what to do with them.
We made this video as a simple how to on sand bags for photography, video and film production.
We bought 8 basic sandbags on amazon for $5 each and some sand at Lowes for $15, added some ziploc freezer bags and for about $60 we have enough sand bags to hold down the lights at a small studio.
Some people may thing $60 is a lot to spend when you are on a tight budget. But, what did you spend on the light on top of the stand? Probably more than $60. And what happens when the stand falls over in the middle of shooting and ruins the scene?
