Hi Raquel, thanks for the comment and the kind words! Really you have 3 options. For absolute beginners iMovie is perfect. You can either get a real good grip of that and move on, or ... just jump straight into either Premiere Pro or Final Cut. Both are fantastic.

Thank you for doing this! It is all very well explained. Do you think you could do a video talking about the different lenses you use for a yoga video, inside and outdoors? I am pretty positive nobody has covered this. I am looking for lens information on youtube and blogs and it seems this is something pretty important and nobody is talking about it 😉 If you don't mind I would appreciate to hear your recommendations. I have a Canon 90D and I don't know what lens to use!! Some mention the 24 mm, other 50mm and others 17-50mm ... crazy!
@RichMaciverPhoto
@RichMaciverPhoto 2 года назад
Hi Motita, Sure thing I will try and do this soon! Generally for filming Yoga/workout videos wider is better. A smaller number = a wider lens ie 8mm lens is much wider than a 85mm lens. A wider lens means you can hand hold your camera and still get your whole face in and also for filming yoga videos it means the camera does not need to be really far away. I'll try make this kind of video soon though! Best, Rich.

@@RichMaciverPhoto thank you Rich! This is great! I was thinking to buy this lens first to try it out and play with it. And see how it goes! I am glad to know this might also work for this purpose. I love nature and I am trying to get into Yoga at the same time, so this was a hard decision. This is the lens to be precise EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Would this be good then? And if you were to buy a prime lens, which one would you recommend? For sure I will let you know how it goes 😌 😉

Thank you Rich and Helen! So so helpful!! Just about to invest in some lighting and was wondering whether 1 piece of lighting would do the job? Probs, it depends on the light in the room and budget but just wanted an honest opinion form a pro :) Also, do you recommend using a CFL or LED light bulb? thanks
@RichMaciverPhoto
@RichMaciverPhoto 3 года назад
HI Sophie! Glad you liked it. I would say 2 lights will more than likely look better - one either side of the camera will give a nice even light. But its all personal preference and budget. CFL or LED, it depends which CFLs and which LED's. LED panels tend to be a lot easier and tidier to deal with day to day, but if you're on a tight budget the cheaper CFL bulbs tend to be brighter and its easier to make the lighting look nice with the softboxes that tends to come with CFL type lights.

Hi! Thank you so much for all this information. I just discovered you and I love it! I had two questions : 1. Most cameras don't allow filming for more than 30 minutes. How can you film a 45min-1h yoga class with the camera ? Or do you do only less than 30 minutes yoga class ? 2. Also, I tried to film with my iphone rx and the video seemed too heavy to transfer to my mac. Is it better to shoot with an Android (the videos seem less heavy)? Thank you :)
@RichMaciverPhoto
@RichMaciverPhoto 3 года назад
Hi Laurence. Thanks for the kind words, I’m glad this helped ☺️ The half hour thing is a dilemma. Some Sony cameras will record for longer but I digress. What my partner does is when it gets to around 25 minutes, and between poses, she will start and stop the camera. When I first started doing this my inner videographer cringed with the fear of seeing the cut. But in reality, people doing your flow/workout won’t notice as they’re too busy doing the flow. Just when you stop and start try to go back to the same position you were in. If that makes sense? When I’m on a job, I’ll use two angles and the cut will be seamless, but for most people filming home workouts that usually not possible. Have you tried hot-spotting the file? If not, attached your phone to you laptop with a cable and search for an app on your laptop called “image capture” it should be on there already. Once it detects your phone, it’s an easy drag and drop of the file. Let me know how you get on... 🙏🏼

@RichMaciverPhoto
@RichMaciverPhoto Месяц назад
It really depends on the space you’re working with. But I think 24mm is a safe bet. 50 is more than likely going to be too tight unless you have a huge room! We use 24mm with the (full frame) camera about 4 metres away. Hope that helps.

I've found with my ZV1 there always seems to be problems uploading things or with the SD card or battery plus its not got great stability when using it for vlogs (unless I'm missing a setting there..) and the zoom isn't great it doesn't go out wide enough to film yoga and thats even with the ulanzi attachment I end up using the gopro now!

@RichMaciverPhoto 10 месяцев назад
Hi Diandra, thanks for saying thanks 😊 A 50mm is definitely a bit too narrow for these kinds of videos. Anything around the 18mm mark will be good for you I think. Any wider, like a 10mm, and it might get “fisheye”. I can’t guarantee it, because I don’t know the size of the room, but somewhere from 18 - 24mm I’d be pretty confident that’d work for you.

@RichMaciverPhoto Год назад
My honest advice would be to hook your microphone up to you iPhone (you can do that with these two cables - amzn.to/3i8QDjS & amzn.to/3vFUGXW) And film a bunch of videos on your phone (in a bright room for better quality) and once you've done that a whole bunch and experimented and got things going good you'll see just how good the iPhone is. Then, once your comfortable with that you can decide if you'd like to upgrade the camera. But it's amazing how much good audio can transform your videos. As far as the camera set-up you mentioned, I do think that would be a great place to start also. The spec and price range look solid and it has audio input as well as headphones so you can check it is all sounding great.
@YogawithSarah2404
@YogawithSarah2404 Год назад
@@RichMaciverPhoto The rode mic comes with a cable similar to the first one do I need a second one or just the other cable on the second link? Is it best to use the front camera or have it on selfie mode to see whats being recorded?
@RichMaciverPhoto
@RichMaciverPhoto Год назад
The black to grey is needed to use it with a phone. The one you got probably has a black bit at each end? That’s for camera’s (it’s a slightly different kind of connection). Selfie or front facing camera. The front facing camera is higher quality, but try both, compare and see which one works better for you. Let me know how you get on.

Hi Rich I've just started filming RU-vid yoga flows I've only got a small room I use a soft box light but I still think it seems a bit dark...any tips?? Feel free to see what the lighting looks like on my flows to see what i mean 🙈
@RichMaciverPhoto
@RichMaciverPhoto 8 месяцев назад
Hi Meg, well done on filming your Yoga flows and for taking the step to invest in a light! It looks like the your light is to the left of the camera and as it spreads across the picture, the right hand side gets darker as the light falls away. If you can, try putting the light directly above the camera. This way it will light you nicely - after all you are the most important part of the video. We use two lights - one on each side of the camera - to get an even light. But this is also completely possible with just one light, you just need to know where to put it. What camera are you filming on? There's always a little bit of a balancing act between camera settings and lighting.
@holistic_meg_
@holistic_meg_ 8 месяцев назад
@RichMaciverPhoto Hi Rich, I tend to have the soft light directly behind the camera but as its a small room I put it further back where the door is so I have more space which is why I guess it looks like its more to the left! Again as it's a small space if I put another soft light since they stick out a bit its hard to hide it out of shot! I'm wondering whether it's worth investing in the neewer type lighting? Not the soft box but the LED video light? It's tricky with the window behind me to get the lighting bang on but if I change the layout of the room I can't get the same angle
@holistic_meg_
@holistic_meg_ 8 месяцев назад
@RichMaciverPhoto Also I've been filming using the GoPro Hero 11 it's got the best wide angle view and is easy enough to set up. I have the Sony ZV1 which I've stopped using recently I just dont know how to use it and whether it is actually the best camera for me as the angle is just not wide enough
@RichMaciverPhoto
@RichMaciverPhoto 8 месяцев назад
Yeah the zv-1’s widest lens point is 24mm. So you would need a larger room really. I think you can set the Go-Pro’s settings manually - so it is possible but requires a little bit of learning. In this video you’ll see we put one light either side of the camera. Unless you have a really big space I would say that’s probably the best layout.
@holistic_meg_
@holistic_meg_ 8 месяцев назад
@RichMaciverPhoto Hi Rich I've been trying to put the light or a ring light on the other side of the room but the light glares off the window...there's not really a lot of space behind the camera to put another light but something about my videos seems off it may be too much in the background or the lighting I'm not quite sure I'm trying to play around with it!

Rich, your videos are "rich". Seriousely though, you cover all the nuts and bolts and keep us all from committing video suicide. One question, within small spaces (literally 3 x 3 meters) how does a person capture an entire portrait view without making it look awful? What focal length lens should we use? I am working with a Sony ZV-E10 and have purchased a Sigma 30mm (for indoor) and 56mm (for outdoor filming for maximum depth of field to rid distractions) but, am willing to exchange to a more appropriate tight-space wide-angle. HELP!
@RichMaciverPhoto
@RichMaciverPhoto 2 года назад
Hey Bill, thanks for checking out the video, hope it helped to some extent! What sort of stuff are you filming? So I think you’re pretty much in the right track. I personally use a sigma 24mm and it doesn’t really have any distortion unless people are near the edge of frame. I think I could probably go even wider and it still be ok. Some “ultra wide” lenses might work. I had the sigma 10mm a while back … but I probably wouldn’t recommend going that wide. Something also worth remembering; if part of the instructors arm or leg briefly leaves frame it’s not the end of the world. The viewer is busy doing the exercise so minor framing details isn’t something they’re worrying about. Let me know how you get on and all the best!!

@@RichMaciverPhoto Thanks, Rich, I am filming seated and standing elderly-population exercises. 24mm vs 16mm? Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. That may kill two birds with one stone. Meaning I can do my talking head and full-body videos. I'd planned to get the Sigma 30mm and 16mm (for talking head).
