This turned out sooo good! I always love seeing the overlap of clips we use in the final product 🤗 thanks so much for chilling with me in Long Beach! Just one of 3 full days of shooting 🤙 And I learned a ton watching you capture your own broll. Have already implemented several of these tips in the weeks since we shot together. Can't wait to meetup again in Denver!
Jake Frew thank you Jake. So glad I discovered you this morning. Grateful. Trying to decide if I should get a Sony a 7S or stick with my Canon lenses I sold my 5D because it didn’t have auto focus. I really want to flip da screen
Alex Gasaway I like the part @ 4:00-4:30 min, I’m going to try that and I also like that jake has the same camera and mic I have ..... well I used to have 😐
This video is incredible! You pinpointed the static shots and zooming in tips perfectly. Thanks so much!! As a youtuber I definitely needed to see this video because I sometimes film alone as well and needed something extra to add more life to the videos I shoot.
Even though I don't like to inject myself into whats supposed to be stories I tell about other people, this is great advice for just generic b-roll and directing subjects. Establishing shots especially are super important.
I love seeing two creators get together and hang out and film!! It's my dream to find like-minded people who want to just go out and film all day. This was also SUPER helpful b/c I'm usually either flying solo or trying not to drive my bf nuts asking him to film with me :)
Great video! One thing that makes b-roll interesting is having a human subject. If no one else is around, like if you’re out camping alone or something, these tips make it really simple to still create engaging content 👍
Thank you so much for making this. As an introvert that has taken up RU-vid it's even hard to let myself go and be filmed when I do have the chance to work with a friend, so I'm definitely going to try this out.
JUST DO IT, I've filmed once or twice alone and even with my brothers and I've felt it and they've told me too how you just feel awkward filming yourself but it's worth it, trust me... whoever sees you would approve if they knew what beautiful creation you were making
Just think about how you feel when you see someone filming themselves. You look at them for two seconds and carry on with ur day. No one cares 🤷♂️ that’s how I got over my fear of filming myself in public
Great video! Was struggling on feeing “awkward” walking back and forth multiple times for myself when we ask others to do it all the time! Earned yourself a subscriber.
These tips are great. I definitely think the part that I need to remember is filming more than just the one action from an angle. Gotta work on setting up the camera and doing like 5 different things so I can have plenty of shots to work with. Great video!
Man I've spent months watching people on RU-vid explain this. You have a talent for visually expressing exactly what you are trying to explain simultaneously on screen. I'll be using your channel to shoot some music short films. Thanks for the tips!
This really helps as I film a lot of my footage by myself so I find it difficult. Been studying how to tell better stories and this really helps me with that
This was actually really helpful! I feel like sometimes I get stuck in getting the same style of shots and watching your content it has me thinking of different angles I can try. Thank you
Don't ever abandon your equipment. Unless you have a tracking fob on it, it's not worth it. Why didn't you make sure there weren't any people around or make sure it's well hidden, like in a tree? If you desperately need to shoot yourself, someone I know recommends hiding a go-pro in a brown paper bag with a hole cut out & place it off to the side, never directly in the middle of a road where people will gravitate to kicking it or picking it up to throw out. But even this I'd be hesitant to do. Imo an invisible selfie stick that is extendable can be held at your hip & extended out behind you as you're walking. The handle looks invisible and won't show up on camera, so it'll look like someone else is recording you. Combine it with a wide-angle lens and you'll appear even further away. Another possibility is to tape it on a skateboard behind you and pull it with a green cord. In post, you can edit out the cord and it'll look like a tracking shot. You'll need a steady surface for this to work. I also suggest using a mini drone that you control by remote. Of course, the battery on these don't last very long, so if you need to get a shot of you walking, then make sure there aren't any obstacles and that you have enough time to turn around & catch it before it drains. My last suggestion is to use a moving luggage case. These are expensive, but worth having if you're solo. You can get great airport B-roll for whenever you arrive at a destination and have the luggage follow you. However, I've seen travel videos where the camera never leaves the hand of the producer and I've never felt like it affected quality. The best videos aren't the ones that have good b-roll, they're the ones that tell a great story. There's no story if you lose your equipment. And as a narrator, you can't give us a genuine experience if your trip is too stressful (or you're too busy filming) to enjoy it. People do still watch amateur videos & these channels have high subscriber counts, bc these vlogs focus on providing great content instead of fancy visuals. Don't bother with fancy camera work if your videos end up being all style & no substance.
@@YourMajesty143 Thanks for all these tips. I'll add that some cameras allow for wireless control of the shutter, so you can start filming by pushing a button on your cellphone. My Canon XC10 can do that.
This is my JAM! 💥 I am using my quarantine time to learn to be a better-reluctant, but emerging-videographer. This solves one of my biggest issues. Thanks! 🙌🏾😎
Thats actually a really nice alley lol Also this video is literally so good! It’s so helpful to oily out the things we normally see in vlogs but can’t necessarily point out on our own because we’re less experienced. Thank You guys!
I need to learn a lot. I've been struggling for long time, because no one share my same passion, so I need to film everything my self. I'm glad I found this video. I appreciate a lot that you shared this. Thank you, and you deserve the world and to be successful. 🙏🙏🙏
Never seen your videos before- but I really appreciate you sharing these tips. I don’t see many creators sharing these many pro tips, usually they are pretty empty - but these are really valuable. Props for giving away some secrets
Really awesome and insightful video, thank you for this! Love that this video provided framework and structure for solo vlogging so you're not just out being a nervous, hot mess hahaha. Can't wait to implement these tips!
Never thought about different focal lengths making it look filmed by another person. I figured on a vlog it’s known that it’s filmed by the person but if you’re really capturing it that way it’s more natural like your there. Great tip.
Another trick for adding handheld shake to a static shot in premiere... just layer a handheld clip on top of a static clip, nest them together, and stabilize the nested shot, then delete the original handheld clip from the nested shot leaving only the static video clip. Just make sure that original handheld clip is relatively still to sell it better.
this video came in to my timeline few times before but never watched it full (i think i played it one time but never finished). today i did and i regret not watching it before. awesome video!!! subed off coarse!!
I love this tutorial Jake, it had some excellent tips! I am a solo traveller and it is challenging when vlogging at times - but like everyone, I do my best. I looked at your catalogue and had to subscribe, you have some interesting topics I am sure will help me. Safe and happy travels to you 🙏
My mother will go back to Philippines on the 6th from Finland. Good to see your comment here. I am a follower of bushcraft youtuber (some) just to give you a possible idea/content.
Your tips will be put to good use Jake. You and Alex both just made my future vids a little better. Simple little things like how to hold the camera to give the appearance that someone else is filming me while vlogging. And that filming myself walking......
Thumbs up 👍 my friend! 🍭 So beautiful experience! I learned a lot from your video. You have a very unique way of expressing information, with these tips I try to improve my channel. 👍👌🤗🤗 I love explore the city by walking, thank you for sharing! ✌😃 watching from Saudi Arabia.
This is such good, entertaining, to the point video. I was vlogging while watching this and already put these tips to use. And why are you 2 such adorable individuals??!
Loved this video!! It was so helpful. While watching I thought you had millions of subscribers but omg why don’t you have millions of subscribers?? You deserve a lot more!!
Super dope!!! 👌 aside from Watching professionals, I love watching people JUST SHOOT creatively. Sick edit, nice b roll, I love the old film filter in between clips. Sick
Cinematic VLOG is very good! I also traveled to Oita prefecture in Japan and took a picture of cinematic VLOG for the first time. Shooting is a lot of fun! The video was very helpful, thank you! I will come to play again. With love from Japan :)
