Came back for a review because I saw some 'Ikes' and Kennedys on Ebay stating they were 40% silver, but the years seemed off. Of course they didn't show the edges, which I suppose is normal (?).At any rate, I decided not to chance a bid. I've already got Plenty of 'clads' of these coins scattered here & there, all over the house. 😁
Lol no wonder my local coin shop was pushing % junk silver. I walked into my 1st coin shop and told them I was pretty new to the hobby. They sold me two 40% silver half dollars for $3.50 each. The spot price as of market close today was $19.10. I'm guessing I got taken to value town, but the nostalgia of the half dollars hit because that's what the "tooth fairy" used to leave under my pillow as a kid. What is the maximum you would pay for 40% silver? Is there a rule of thumb? Like only +$0.25 over spot? Thanks.
Doubtful. Weigh the coin, do a specific gravity test, you'll find that it's '40% silver clad'. Even the 1964 and prior U.S. coinage was not 'pure silver', it was .900 fine (90% silver, 10% copper).
