My old dentist gave me so much anxiety I avoided the dentist for two years. I always felt that he wasn't thorough for my actual concerns. Once, i went with an obvious cavity (there was some visible decay) and he completely ignored it. I went to a new dentist today and finally learned what a dental hygienist was and got my plaque scraped for the first time ever as well as my first ever fluoride varnish

I had a dentist who left two cottons inside my two teeth while doing fillings, and I ended up developing cysts, infections, and lost both of my teeth. I immediately got dental implants to avoid my teeth from closing the gaps & bone loss. My parents filed a lawsuit against the dentist.

For me chainging dentists was the best decision ever. My old dentist never discussed anything, he just took the decission. I had several fillings without numbing, and he didn't seemed to care about the pain. He almost never took x-rays, and staff was chanching very quickly. I always felt everything was about money. Also I was very anxious and too shy to say anything. Luckily I moved and found alovely new dentist. She is very kind, explains everything and takes me into the decissionmaking process. Altough I had a lot of fillings done, I now am only a little nervous and taking very good care of my teeth because of their instructions. Wished I made a switch years ago!

I just started seeing a new dentist and was really surprised by the first appointment. The hygienist was the one to show me around the office, full tour. From exam room to X-ray\mri room to the sanitation room, even the dentists personal office! It was the longest dentist appointment I had ever had! The hygienist was so thorough as was the dentist! They even caught the fact that the previous dentist had flipped my X-rays and marked the wrong teeth for root canals! I am a week post surgery now (quite a lot of work to be done because of everything my previous dentists had done to me but she was able to save so many teeth that had been marked for extraction or root canals!) and my teeth feel great! I have a two more appointments till my teeth are at 100% but for the first time in my life I’m not scared to go see my dentist!

I am a hygienist turned general dentist. I have done all of my own hygiene for almost 30 years. I refer out endo, placing implants, most extractions, ortho, perio surgeries - things I don't enjoy doing. I do bondings, crowns, bridges, restore implants..... I have a small office and I don't make a lot of money. Just bc you are a dentist, it doesn't mean you have to do every single dental procedure out there. I enjoyed hygiene and wanted to do more. But once I learned more, I found I don't enjoy every single aspect of dentistry. So, I stick to what I like doing and let the specialists do their thing.

@Geraldine6131 3 года назад
1- do they have a dental hygienist 2- gum checks 3- how long does a typical cleaning appointment last? 4- how often do they take x-rays 5- infection control (ask for tour of sterilisation area) Do they do procedures in office or get referrals? Referrals are important. Find someone who is informative.

I was very happy with my dentist and after 12 years, he left that practice and went somewhere else for a couple of years. Then my hygienist retired early. I stayed there for about 2 more years and then found that my original dentist opened his own practice and I went back to him. I was so happy he came back. I trust him implicitly and he is honest about any diagnosis there might be.

I just remembered then working on my tooth with the sams problem as you they didn't wait for the numbing to do its thing so they started working on my tooth while I sat there in the procedure just crying the whole time. It was hell. So now I'm afraid to go the dentist...

After watching this, I realised how terrible my dentist is! When I go for my cleaning and general check up, I’m done in around 5 minutes, the worst part is, I have never felt any rinse and suction when I’m with him. He gets the mirror and scaler and scrapes a bit of the plaque off. I’m 19 years old and I’m dating a 29 year old dentist but he isn’t my dentist, and I’m thinking to go to him. I’m currently in dental hygiene school (because of you, Whitney!) and I’ve even noticed at 2 years into dental hygiene school how bad he is. Whenever I come home from the dentist, my boyfriend always checks my teeth in case he didn’t do it properly and for as long as I can remember, my.p boyfriend practically cleans my teeth again after I come home because of the terrible job he did. I’m transferring to my boyfriends office now! My first dental appointment with him is on this coming Tuesday! Wish my luck, haha. 🙌

Thanks so much for this. I went to the dentist for the first time after the pandemic and was glad that my appointment was short. I thought that my visit was strange only after I left. The dentist only looked at the X-rays (I think)and did not actually look in my mouth like most dentists do. He just asked if my teeth hurt and that I had a weird hook-shaped cavity. He also criticized the root canal and crown that I got previously. Something about one root still being there. The dental hygienist numbed around my tooth line with a topical gel while cleaning which I was grateful for but that was it for my visit. I was out in fifteen minutes after being told I needed to get a root canal on the tooth. I don’t think he’s wrong but I also don’t trust that I don’t have other issues. I’ll be checking with my insurance but I think I will pony up for second opinion.

Definitely time for a new dentist, my dentist is always saying I have like 5 million problems and gave me a crown at 17.... I really don’t think I needed a crown.... he also is very impatient with any kind of filling app and doesn’t wait until you’re completely numb and also uses a prophy jet which I absolutely hate because I’m sensitive and I tell them I don’t like it and they don’t care

I couldn't have found a better dentist for me than the dentist I go to now. There are two dentists in the office, but the dentist who owns the dental office always sees me because of my severe gag reflex. He is so sweet, kind and caring. Although I think he gets frustrated with me sometimes. I love that he wants to get to know his patients and asks me if I went for my walk before the appointment. The hygienist is great to. A few dental hygienists I went to previously were so rough, but she is always gentle with me while cleaning my teeth. They always do all the things you mentioned. They are the only dental office that could actually get dental x-rays from me. Sometimes the right dentist makes all difference. My teeth are cleaner than they ever have been. I used to shake, and my teeth would chatter before a dental appointment. But not anymore. I can't say enough good things about Dr. G and Nancy. I can't imagine going anywhere else.

I went to my dentist today and tht was the quickest cleaning I ever had. When I was on my dads insurance, Blue Cross Blue Shield I went to a dental office and they were very professional. They did my X-Rays and explained I had some build up and that my wisdom teeth needed to be removed (even tho I didn’t have any pain at all) that for Me was questionable bc Wht wld be the reasoning if I’m not complaining? Then her hygienist? Or dental nurse stayed in the room and held my mouth open with those tools so the other dentist could clean my teeth. I really liked that type of support and wasn’t sure if it was standard. The cleaning it self took some time and when I left I felt like my teeth were squeaky clean. But then my dentist told me I’m at risk for gingivitis and I was shocked and scared like what? How? I can’t remember if she mentioned anything about cavities. But long story short, I ended up nva going back due to fear of getting my teeth removed. So 3-4 years later I age out of my dads insurance and COVID hits. I lose my job and get on government insurance . I find a doctor with pretty good reviews. The office was clean staff was nice. But somethings that were odd 1) she did ask me when’s the last time I been to a dentist , but didn’t request any dental records or XRays 2) we went over the x rays together and she said she didn’t see any cavities she didn’t even see my chipped/cracked tooth on the X-ray (I thought tht was weird cuz my other dentist saw my cracked tooth on the x ray) but she reassured she’s gona check my teeth to be sure . So she said she notice my teeth had some deep ness too them and that she didn’t see tht on the X-ray and if she doesn’t see it on their she won’t work on it? I was soooo confused like huh? 3) she saw my chipped cracked tooth and she said it needed a covering. She said I had a little build up on my bottom teeth. 4) she did all the cleaning by herself no helping hand like the first one. 5) she gave no report on my gums at all and didn’t even mention gingivitis like the first one. 5) the cleaning itself took less thn 10 minutes Idk who to trust who to believe bc the second one got me thinking I take real good care of my teeth when I know when I’m depressed I can go 1-3 days without ever brushing (just being honest) but let her tell it I must be amazing at brushing. I don’t normally floss either and I would think a dentist would be able to see that and make mention. Idk if the first dentist was honest or trying to upsell but I know this other dentist was too fast and that was weird.... Sorry for all my typos I’m using my phone

Charlie Nonya 3rd molars (wisdom teeth) are very hard to clean (for you at home and your hygienist too!) which is why dental professionals will sometimes recommend having them removed if it appears they are accumulating plaque and calculus. I always do my very best to scale all of the molars... and if I am concerned that I am not cleaning the crown and root completely - I will explain that to my patient and the dentist. Don’t be afraid to *kindly* bring your concerns to your hygienists attention. It makes me sad that patients aren’t getting the care they deserve. I once almost forgot to floss under a patients lingual bar retainer (a metal wire on the back side of teeth to keep them from moving) and I couldn’t believe I had spaced it! I was so glad he brought it to my attention. I hope you find a great hygienist who really cares about your oral health! (Not saying the last one didn’t because she may have made a mistake, like I have) ♥️

I had a dentist who just looked at my X-ray but didn't look in my mouth and just came into the exam room and just pointed to the tooth that was chipped and my other tooth next to it on the screen. He didn't explain anything to me and told me what he wanted to do. Didn't allow me to make my decision! The two front teeth he wanted to extract both and do implants. When I went to my dentist I have now she looked at my mouth and explained everything to me and discussed my treatment options. She supported my decision not to extract the teeth and do the crown procedure. I was a nervous wreck and at my breaking point. I was so stressed and my anxiety was extreme. Now I am at a dental office who I feel like they care about patients not the money.

They did everything right as you suggested in this video (which I've been watching so many since my deep cleaning), and they were even able to deep clean and do laser treatment on my whole mouth during that one appointment. My teeth and gums look completely healthy and white now, and I'm so proud to smile again. I'm actually very excited to go back in 3 months for my next appointment! What if I like my dentist and the staff but they don't have a hygienist? I'm actually not 100% sure whether mine does since I just started going there but I really like the dentist and everyone else who works there. The dentist did my cleaning but it was the first one I ever had (please don't judge, I grew up poor and we couldn't afford dental care) so I'm wondering if she did it because I needed a VERY thorough cleaning. I had a lot of cavities but the dentist has been great with filling them and making sure I'm comfortable and not in any pain. I've had 3 appointments there and I have 1 more to go to have all the cavities taken care of. I know the facility is clean and I've heard the dentist and assistant (or maybe she is a hygienist? I'm not sure, she helps the dentist with the fillings and charting cavities, I don't know the difference between an assistant and a hygienist) discuss autoclaving instruments so I know they're keeping things clean. They are also requiring all patients to rinse with Listerine and wash their hands before they go to the room so that's another layer of cleanliness.
@TeethTalk
@TeethTalk 3 года назад
some dentists do prefer to do their own cleanings - especially for new patients! totally not a red flag! it just SOMETIMES goes hand in hand with dentists that don't care to have a hygienist - and some are the opposite and care EXTRA to do cleanings! hope this helps! it sounds like you found a comfortable great office! wishing you continued dental care :)

1. Ask if they have a dental hygienist 2. Gum checks (periocharting) 3. Appointment length (needs to be more than 15 minutes) 4. How often do they take x-ray? (At least once every 3 years) 5. Infection control (Clean office, wearing gloves, ask for the sterilization station.) The only acceptable time they're allowed to not wear gloves is if you are a model at p*rnhub. 6. Make sure the professionals give you your options. 7. Make sure you are comfy with your doctor. 8. Places to find good dentist: find local dental map at teeth talk girl, referrals, accredited dental school if you are poor. 9. Always trust your instincts

After seeing many dentist what I consider a good dentist. 1. One who Stitches the wound after a tooth is pulled so that you don't get a dry socket. 2. They use a rubber dental dam to catch the toxic amalgam from going down your throat. 3. They have a good digital x-ray machine. If they show you an x-ray and it looks all blurry, I wouldn't pay for it. 4. If they say you get what you pay for. It's another way of saying we are expensive and if you go somewhere else you will not get as good of a job. 5. If they want to see you right away, or the next day. Red flag. 6. Another red flag is if they don't tell you the price before you go in. They should at least give you rough estimates of a cavity per side, a crown, tooth pulling, x-rays, cleanings. Be careful of the ones they give you the price for a crown, but then charge you for the build underneath the crown. Be sure to ask him if there's a build under the crown you have to pay for that's extra. Ask them how much it would cost to remove the crown or clean underneath it if something goes bad.

Is it normal for an ortho to recommend the extraction of two healthy teeth (both premolars in the upper mouth) in order to facilitate braces?
@A.K.00
@A.K.00 3 года назад
extraction before ortho is a common thing, because maybe your teeth need more space than currently available in your jaw while they are getting perfectly aligned throughout ur braces treatment - so some teeth at the back may have to be removed to make that space for others. That being said, you can get second opinion though, in case you actually don't need it but ur ortho is suggesting that to make more $$.

Is it bad that my dentist seems like he always has temps for hygienists? Not that they do a bad job (kind of slow since they don't know where everything is) but it seems kind of sketch. I guess he's trying to save money by not having them on insurance or something, plus he's in his late sixties so maybe hygienists don't want to commit to working for him? Follow up vid suggestion would be how to you tell if you don't have a good dentist? I think a lot of people wouldn't know unless there was something really egregious.

Is it true that there is a trend that a "spit bowl" is no longer used in newly established dental office. Thank you very much for your professional advice on this dear Teeth Talk Girl.
@TeethTalk

hi friend! yes - in modern offices - the spit bowl has been replaced by the saliva ejector (also known as the suction) due to infection control. suctioning out the "gunk" is much cleaner (reducing aerosol spatter) than spitting into a bowl. hope this helps!

I always feel like it's a red flag if a medical professional doesn't take the time to read over a chart. They should have a general idea of what you came in for and what complaints you have. If they're so busy or distracted that they can't give the appointment their full focus, something is wrong.

I am happy to say that I found my perfect dentist. It seems like me and the hygienist have developed a bit of a friendship when it comes to talking about dental health. She also allowed me to bring noise canceling headphones to my appointment. Because the sounds drive me crazy. I would like your opinion on some things that happened at a previous dentist. The hygienist scaled my teeth, but she did not polish them. Would anyone consider this a red flag?
@BB-mb7ov
@BB-mb7ov 2 года назад
I know some were skipping polish during the pandemic bc of aerosols. Some won't if you have severe dry mouth. They taught "selective polishing" in school (only polish the teeth that are stained) it removes enamel technically (not a significant amount/enamel remineralizes) but I polish every tooth. Depends. Maybe she didn't want to bother you with the noise it makes. It's considered cosmetic. I'd just ask her. I'm sure she'll be glad to explain. If she gets defensive, maybe that's A red flag
@andylopez142
@andylopez142 2 года назад
@@BB-mb7ov that is what the hygienist does at my office. She does the x-rays. Checks my jaw area. Runs her fingers up and down the area to make sure that all the bones and muscles are working properly. She does gum charting, and she does scaling as well as thorough polishing. The whole front of the office was practically raving about how amazing she is. She did ask me last time when she was scaling that if she can use the ultrasonic, but she was concerned that it might bother me because of the fact that I was wearing noise canceling headphones. I then told her that I will raise my left hand if anything does bother me as we previously agreed during the first appointment.
@andylopez142
@andylopez142 2 года назад
@@BB-mb7ov my reasoning for leaving the other clinic, is because the hygienist seemed to get a bit irritated when I asked her to describe what was going on. This is especially important to me and because of the fact that I am visually impaired. Also, it was clear to me that she probably has never seen a patient who is visually impaired before, because when she came out, and saw that I cant see she started to breathe kind of quickly, and I then mentioned are you OK. I don’t know why she did it. But it was definitely something I noticed.
@BB-mb7ov
@BB-mb7ov 2 года назад
@@andylopez142 then you did the right thing by leaving. Some people are just unhappy at work and impatient. I thought the hygienist who let you wear the headphones didn't polish. I misunderstood. @andylopez142
@andylopez142 2 года назад
@@BB-mb7ov no. One hygienist that would not polish didn’t even look at my chart. Because I had some request because of some sensory issues. And I asked her if she looked at it. And she said no. And that is why I left. I would like to mention, at my last appointment, the hygienist after she was done scaling, she asked me if it was OK if she can use the ultrasonic to make sure that everything was thoroughly done, she showed some concern because of the fact that I was wearing noise canceling headphones. So she was concerned that the sound might bother me. So, she said that if it does bother me to raise my left hand. Which of course I obliged.

Depends on the dentist, which tooth, and how deep the cavity is. If the dentist is new it will take longer. If it is a front tooth it takes longer to match for colour and shape. If the cavity is deep then more drilling is required as well as more steps needed like adding a liner, glass ionomer, etc.

In the UK, under NHS treatment we tend to see the hygienist straight after a perio chart by the dentist of which the hygienist has comprehensive access to patient records and charts. On my last visit, on entering my hygienists room I was greeted by two thumbs up and '1s and 2s....brilliant'!! Ps, I prefer my hygenist to my dentist. My dentist is competent and I have no professional complaints, he's very dry and 'matter of fact' but my hygenist is golden and takes the time to explain everything she is doing, gives good, trustworthy advice and isn't afraid to contradict the dentist based on her patient observations on custom advice.... She advised me so much more effectively based on my personal needs compared to my dentist 'scripted advice' ☺

I have the same feeling towards my dentist vs hygienist so much that I want to change dentists bc of the former but then that would mean I’d lose my hygienist . I’ve only seen that one hygienist once in Feb but she’s a keeper and a game changer . She was also able to measure my gums without any pain , I can’t say that anyone had done that for me before painlessly . I have gum disease on my top gums and without anaesthetic getting that area cleaned is a lot of bleeding gums and pain . Another dentist I saw at a different clinic is nice but her only solution is to freeze me with the needle and do half a cleaning at a time . This new hygienist gave me periodontal gel ( usually used for deep cleanings ) which is stronger than the regular topical numbing and I needed a shit ton to be comfortable but it worked , no pain , no freezing needles or split appts . The gel is the stuff of miracles , numbing is gold . In another form ( Emla skin cream ) it allows the needle phobic to get needles without pain . The dentist however gave me two wisdom tooth extraction experience three years prior that scarred me for life and put me off dental care for two years after the trauma . She contradicts her own advice from half year prior about whether my wisdom teeth need removal . First time she pushed me to book that appt with the first infected wisdom teeth despite the infection not going away with antibiotics , second time for another tooth I booked the appt immediately after infection took hold ( I don’t respond to antibiotics) and got told that the removal wasn’t necessary but she’d do it . Both times I had horrible complications post surgery . This was clearly a case requiring specialist referral and she chose to do it herself . I’m thinking of changing to the other dentist in the practice so I can avoid this dentist but keep the hygienist .
