On the northern tip of Tigertail Beach in Marco Island, Florida, you'll find Sand Dollar Island, where the Gulf waters deposit hundreds of sand dollars every day. Here are some tips as to how to look for them!
Fun story: I live in Louisiana, and the past current years me and my family has gone on trips to Grande Isle with my aunt, uncles and cousins. My aunt has been searching for sand dollars every year they’ve went, which is about TWENTY ONE YEARS!, and she has never found one... My first year I went? I found one. What sucks? It broke!
I’m there for another week, didn’t see sand dollars but the shells are awesome. Had to go back later cause we found we brought a fiddler crab home too....wanted it to live.lol
Which beaches have sand dollars? I mean I know the ones in Florida does & I think that they had said that there are some in California does but what about North Carolina?
Kawaii Berry buns the fact this lady found so many shells means that many sea life has died there. Your beach doesn't have many you said? That good, it means not as many sea life has died in your part.
I’m heading to Marco in a few days, I’m from out of the country (Canada) and I was wondering if there is anything saying that I won’t be able to bring sand dollars back to my home?
There are actually rules about sand and shells because of microorganisms. I would check with the customs laws. I know I couldn't mail them to a friend in Canada.
I'm trying to plan a trip here and I'm having a hard time researching it's location. Is this particular spot after the dreaded mile walk through lagoons? As a first timer, could you give directions from entering Marco Island to here? Like you're talking to a 3 year old lol. I'm directionally challenged. I'm coming from Tampa.
+Katlin Hall Tugertail Beach Park is in the Northwest part of the Island. From Collier, you would turn right onto Kendall, and then left onto Hernando, which takes you to the public access for Tigertail. The best shelling is at the northern tip of the tail along the Gulf.
+Quirky Chrissy Thank you so much! I can't wait to go there. I've been trying to find one on Sanibel/Captiva with no luck. Hopefully Tigertail will be good to me. I really appreciate the info. :)
+Katlin Hall good luck to you! And enjoy! It's my favorite beach. And the people who run the Tigertail social media accounts are all super nice too. :)
I don't know how there's MILLIONS of beautiful shells and sand dollars. xD. today i had to get into the water at Linda beach i think to find decent shells.
I've never been to Linda Beach, but I know that Marco Island and surrounding beaches on the Southwest tip of Florida have the most shells I've ever seen on a beach.
***** I've found teeny tiny sand dollars about the size of a quarter in northern California. Otherwise, I've only seen them in southwest Florida, but I've never been to the Carolina beaches.
Pretty much. But it's in knowing what they look like like that helps. My first few times, someone had to point them out to me before I was able to spot them on my own.
When I was a child (now 50) we used to find a lot of them at Matagorda. Gulf Coast--Texas. I go several times a year and have yet to find any--and I've been looking. We usually go about 10 miles down the beach. Very few vehicles that far down. Still love looking for sand dollars and sea glass.
