If you’d swung 3 scribe lines it gives a better location. You usually end up with a small triangular shape and the centre is in the middle of this shape.. Setting the dividers does not need to be so accurate.

AHHHHHhhhhhh....! So *that's* how it's done! At the risk of sounding "kooky", this is an example of sacred geometry.

Thank you, for sharing your knowledge, I have watched a couple of your videos and will be watching more, you do a good job. Simple and direct, to the point with out the usual Yanky BullPoo if you know what I mean. Thanks Geoff.

Note that unless the metal stock is perfectly round (which is unlikely) the center point will vary slightly, depending upon the measuring points used on the circumference. You can see that in the video where the previous punch mark is slightly misaligned with the scribe cross over. Rob

Take a 4 jaw chuck clamp it to the shaft centred install in lathe and put steady around 4 jaw and drill end centre hole, been turning 1,6 ton shafts,,easy..

if you have a lathe. Rob said at the beginning that this is a different way of finding the center.

Do you have any tricks for cross drilling holes in round stock at 90 degrees from each other? I don't have the fancy equipment to do it properly.

To do it accurately you will need to index the job. I do it in the lathe using a paper indexing disc, but it all depends upon what you have at your disposal and how you intend to drill the holes. Cheers Rob

I would like to ask about that L820 camera. From reviews I don't know if I have to like it or hate it. What are your experiences with that camera? How good is that camera with focusing on things in 0,5m distance? What are your experiences with the battery life? Thanks.

I get very good results out of mine. Most actual owners give it a high star rating. For $215 it leaves anything else for dead in that price range IMHO. Battery life is excellent/ large. AA swap over (any type) is quick, you can use high capacity cells, I love that capability. Optics are excellent. Macro is very sharp. Focusing is average, not totally reliable if shooting a small close object against large back ground. Generally it does the job/sharp. Camera is amazing in low light. I use manual over ride on basic auto for light compensation. It also has full auto. The camera over compensates when shooting white objects indoors. OK out doors though. Video is totally smooth with no pixelation or problem of any type - does great HD 1080p. Audio has no background noise (like Canons I've owned) but over modulates easily. Very dependent on distance from microphone. I could easily afford to update this camera, but it does everything I want very well and has not missed a beat over hundreds of hours of use in a workshop. Be aware that the original firmware had a sound/video sync issue, but that is easily upgraded and all is then well. Great little camera for the money. The only thing it lacks is an external microphone jack, but then they all do in that price range. Cheers Rob

But you then have the problem of not being able to drill it squarely using a hand drill, surely?

Tell me another way to do it?

xynudu am I wrong?

No. You have to drill it as accurately as you can by hand. There is generally some variation between drill tip angle and a lathe centre angle, so it's not going to make a huge difference if it's a few degrees off of vertical.

not even lathes are dead accurate and neither is the stock that you usually buy, you just make it as accurate as you can. If you are that worried then send it to a professional.

How do you set your dividers in the first place, yours were already set and didn’t need adjusting. Bit rubbish really.

Set them to half diameter. Use a steel rule with etchings and remember to start at 10 mm as your zero point.
