The concept of giving charge is wrong ... Charge will be given on the basis of oxidation number... PO4 which is exceptional case for you in your trick... Can be solved by the o.n Phosphorus belongs to 15 group so it's o.n is 5 and oxygen belongs to 16 group and have o.n 2. In PO4 = o.n of p +4(o.n of oxygen) = 5 + 4(-2) =5 -8 =-3 Hence change on PO4 is -3
