I’ve always been into my art and photography, I have always been steered away from going down the art route because it’s not a “real job” I worked in my fathers company for 5 years.. I felt very lost and lonely. I ended up telling him I needed to leave and moved to a new country! I have finally allowed myself to actually give photography a go. Thank you for being so open about your story and helpful. You keep me motivated to keep going.
Amazing video and channel. SO many of these tips apply to photography in general, not just food photography. Biggest point I think is knowing who is actually looking to hire, and what they want. Often times you'd think a restaurant owner is looking for pictures? Nope they're looking for ads and menus, either provide that, or find the middle man who will make use of your pictures
I have just got my first client, I feel so scary, and once I open your videos to know about the financial part, I feel so comfortable and more confident. I love you ♥️
I love learning about food photography for some reason! Not at all a photographer haha but it's really fascinating to me! Thanks for another fantastic video :)
Hey Joanie, I cannot tell you how inspiring and motivating this video is. I can't thank you enough for putting in so much effort and sharing genuine tips for all of us. It matters a great deal, I'm gonna start establishing my work soon and follow everything you shared. I hope it works out ( fingers crossed) ! Thanks once again. Keep up your great work !
Can you make a video discussing your approach to creating a portfolio to show potential clients and agencies? What types of pictures do you include? What websites do you use? What format do you recommend sending portfolios to people? Love your insight
Every Bite Shot RU-vid video begins with Joanie saying, "What's sha'kin bacon?" and ends with, "Byeeeeee." What happened to the "Byeeeee."? Nobody does it like you! That's part of your signature. Anyway, practical, artful, and technical. You provide it all and that is why I look forward to visiting with you each Thursday morning.
So glad! And the "bye" got cut as a part of re-working format to increase viewer retention through the duration of a video, which in good news, is totally working
I feel like I could sit here all day with a cup of coffee and watch your videos as if you are talking to me in person. Because everything you say makes sense, and I learn alot, and you are so adorable when you talk. haha
Solid advice, and thanks as always for using examples from your own business pre-youtube success. Much of this applies to other areas of commercial photography as well. It does get easier to approach businesses over time too, it was super scary for me at first, but now it feels casual. The market feels saturated, but now I've started to talk to small businesses in my town they all want images but don't know where to start. Also I can't stop thinking about colour theory while watching this after all the colour videos you've just done!
It's definitely a wild time in the photography space and I think we're only just starting to see another major shift in the way business is done. Here's to staying nimble, staying connected and keeping overhead low :)
The Bite Shot would you believe that literally minutes after watching this video, a local food focused PR company popped up on my IG feed? I’d never heard of them but they work with some of my favourite local companies so I’m go try and tee something up. This might be the Wild West, but there’s good money in it for the bold and brave!
Thanks for the awesome tips! I actually did a personal project for a small sauce company a couple of months ago. They asked to share my photos. I said sure! Just recently they contacted me asking for my rates for a more in depth and commercial shoot with their product because they love my work. I was so excited! I gave them my quote and I haven’t heard anything back. (Wasn’t really that much!) I’m terribly saddened by this and have felt pretty discouraged since then. :(
I stumbled across this channel the other day and I love your content!! I have recently decided that I want to do more personal project photography and am embarking on my two passions, food and photography. Your videos are really informative and useful. From how to make backdrops to getting your first paid gig in this genre. I love it. Thanks for the great content from the UK.
Thank you for the tips!!! I'm in school for photography right now and I love doing a lot of macro/product photography type things. I'm obsessed with seeing the world from an object or small animal's perspective. Anyways, food photography fits in with that style as well! It'd be a dream job for me to work with products and food!
Thanks so much Joanie! This video couldn't have come at a better time. I am currently in the early days where I am trying to find my first paid client and I send dozens of messages on Instagram and via email daily but nothing has come through yet. I was starting to get discouraged and doubt my abilities but watching this is yet another reminder to not give up!
The moment you mentioned Joel Grimes, I smashed that like button. Thank you for the tips, very helpful. I lived in Phoenix 9 years ago, makes me want to go back to just hang around great photographers such as yourself, Joel Grimes and Don Giannatti and learn more first hand. I guess I could stop by and say hello to Steve Huff, to see what cameras he's reviewing.
The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. - William Arthur Ward Thank you teacher 👩🏫 I’ve learned so much from your channel❤️
This is such an uplifting video Joanie! I am just starting out (via school) and doing a lot of photos for free, since I want to train a lot and build a portfolio. Will you make a video about how much you can start charging for shoots? per hour or per shoot (quantity of pictures etc)? XX
You’re a star Joanie. Just yesterday I sent my mate a message to about this exact topic. But how awesome is it that while I’m still waiting for her response, I received your email notification about the same topic today! Happy days 👏👏
you are the one who i would like to be on youtube. the way u package knowledge is amazing. Love to learn form your videos as they are easy and so natural to grab.
Hi Joanie, thanks a lot for sharing this, I recently found your channel and I ABSOLUTELY LOOOVE IT!! i feel this could be the path I would like to go, but I am not so confident to take that jump yet. I was wondering if you have any tips for when you are starting, how to price your work?? And would you recommend to do some free jobs as a way to get exposure and get your portfolio up and running? I would really appreciate your advice on this. Thanks a lot and have a great day!
thank you so much for sharing. Your videos are not only educational but also motivational. I really appreciate the last part of the video, the honest talk was really needed. Thank you thank you thank you!!
So other than this being a GREAT video, has anyone told you how nice the color flow is? I know that was the last book club - but your reds are really speaking to me here!😊 Which came first: the awesome mug or the pretty top you’re wearing? Such an informative message here Joanie - you always work so hard to grow your business and I love the saying from your dad regarding the rejections! 🥰😍🤗
After all these colour theory tutorials & book club readings, I am soooo surprised that your mug isn’t green! (Complimentary colours). Great info as always, thanks a bunch for what you do!
The personal project idea is so interesting. I would love to hear more about what you've done and why to give the rest of us some ideas. Perhaps a separate video on that topic some day?!!
Thank you very much for sharing such useful, down to earth, good practical tips and ideas to remember! Could you consider telling us one day about the photoshoot process of for example, restaurant menu? Like, how do you do the setup of the environment is dark, only has artifical lighting or ungly surroundings? What if the dishes are ugly? How long does it usually take to pictures, say 5? I imagine these days you're way quicker than when you started :) I am a pastry chef that's into photography, so I often take pictures of the cakes I do at work for our social media accounts. I always struggle with limited probs and setup.. plus, I always feel like I take too long.. Damn, and how to take a good vertical picture of flat tarts?! Those drive me nuts.. If one day you have a spare moment, some answers would be highly appreciated! Thank you very much for what you do! Liene
That was such a great video, Joanie, that I sent it to my daughter - and she doesn't even have a camera! So much good, common sense in there, and delightfully presented.
@@TheBiteShot My daughter sent me some terrific iPhone photos of her keto diet meals that she cooked. I'm encouraging her to look very closely at what you are doing and consider it for a career change. You make it all look so much fun. Also directed her to read your inspiring story. (Disclaimer: Phone cameras are not cameras!)
Most RU-vid advice videos. Give the advice after talking irrelevance for 10 mins into a video The bite shot: advice given in first 2 minutes of 14 minute video. That’s what makes you great
Hello from Russia!) Thank you Joanie, this tips are universe for each country of the world and they totally works btw thanks for reminde to use brands in personal projects and tagging them, this is such an awesome idea ^^
Do you have any videos about food and restaurant photography when you don't have such a controllable setting. Like just walking into a restaurant and ordering and being able to shoot the best shot. This would be a great video for someone just starting out I think :)
Awesome video thanks for sharing these valuable tips, already subscribed to your channel 👍 Do you have a video about pricing, how to price when you are starting! Thanks once again
Great video Joanie 🙌🏼 I have watched it a couple of times actually... Question: Do you (recommend) reaching out 'just' by email to new potential clients or do you have to show up in the shop/restaurant?
These tips are AMAZING. Joanie you should link your awesome necklace in your gear list as well. Just kidding. But I loooove it. Pleeeease tell us where you found it! 💕
It was a gift from a friend. So cute, right? There's a little heart in the middle of the camera. She got it here beuniki.com/ but last I checked it was out of stock.
This video is super helpful! The shutter stock custom, well I am a part of that but never manage to agree with any project is because they offer peanuts. I was shocked at the amount they offer 😄
