I love art books! This is how and where I find them: there are three types of book to be looking for. First, The Classic Art Book. This is what you'd expect when you think of the term "art" books: artist catalogues and portfolios, step-by-step and how-to books, along with painting and drawing techniques. Second, Books With Reference Photos. These consist of books (often vintage) with lots of pictures on subjects that interest you. Reference photos are great to draw from, and they're nice to have on-hand instead of relying solely on the internet. Third: Conceptual Inspiration and Research. These books are intended for reading and learning about subjects you'd like to make art about. With all three categories, it's important to look at books you wouldn't expect to find inspiring. Cookbooks and gardening books are great as they typically have beautiful layouts and graphic design. Looking at these types of books for inspiration instead of the typical "art" book can lead to many new creative ideas! Now, I have five places of where to find these types of books.
Used book stores have fantastic inventory ranging from new and old publications. The likelihood of finding something to your taste is far greater here, simply because every single book in the store is different. This means every used book store is different too. Used bookstores are perfect for finding unexpected gems on topics you'd never even think to look at before. And, thrifting can help you save some money. I love discovering antique books because of the quality of their photography. The pictures have a much softer, warmer, and more vibrant feeling.
The public library is another great option for finding books and saving money. Because there is no financial commitment, you're able to spend time with books you might not normally. The library is great at covering all the bases of classic famous artists, their work, and their biographies. They also have some unusual and obscure books. Your local library has lots of books on art history, all types of crafting, and good books to use as reference photos.
Barnes & Noble might seem obvious, but it's for a good reason: they have a nice art section. They have all the popular art books on lots of famous artists, paintings, drawings, sculptures, watercolors, ceramics, illustration, graphic design, hand-lettering, typography, and more. However, I would most recommend B&N for their creative workbooks and guided journals. They have lots of self-help books on creativity. I recently purchased The Artists Way, The Creative Act, and the Five Minute Journal.
The internet. Online. Instagram. Deep dive and go down rabbit holes to find the best, coolest, most unique art books that you've never heard of before.
Also, art markets, art fairs, and zine fest. These are great places in your local area that give you the opportunity to meet artists in your community. Zines are wonderful because they're affordable, hand-made publications and pieces of art that you can take home and treasure.
