This is a brief demonstration of how to locate the source of fatwood and how to process it ready for fire lighting.
This video is in regards to a request I received asking for more information on fatwood from a fellow adventurer, Mari, her channel is Funsized Earthling -
/ @funsizedearthling
The first source of fatwood I came across was from the trunk of a fallen coniferous pine tree and from there you can break it apart to uncover the strong, resinous core which will be ideal for fire lighting. The second source was from a fallen Spruce pine tree where I cut off a limb to reveal the inner fatwood.
There will be things I’ve missed out on this video and although the examples used weren’t the best of fatwood my main goal in this video was to go over two natural sources and use one to light a fire.

Thanks for this well-presented video! I like how you have considered presenting this to some audiences who might have no bushcraft background like myself. I’ve seen a number of videos that featured fatwood but I feel like they were aimed more towards people who already have basic knowledge. I’ve always thought fatwood is from a specific tree (fatwood tree). Haha. So again, thanks for this concise video. I’ve been wanting to do a proper woodland camp once I’ve saved up enough courage (& knowledge). And thank you for the shoutout! Not sure I totally deserve it but I appreciate the good word. Mari P.S. You make a good instructor!

Funsized Earthling Thanks very much, I always worry that people might not be able to keep up or understand my way of explaining things as I personally find my style slightly unorthodox, but thank you it’s lovely to hear that I’d make a good instructor, I might have Elaine Bovill to thank for that as a few years ago she taught me a lot about coaching, psychology and getting the best out of people, she’s known throughout the UK for her skills. Fatwood is from Pine trees which are coniferous or evergreen. As there are over 100 different species of Pine trees it’s fairly easy to find but besides that not a lot of people know about it. From watching your videos I think you’ve definitely got what it takes but if you want to go camp in the woods going full bushcraft you may want to wait until spring or summer for the hotter weather as full bushcraft to me doesn’t include the use of a tent, however that’s just my opinion, bushcraft doesn’t have any rules although some people do believe it does, I say those people need to relax more. For me spring or early autumn is best due to not a lot of midges which can be sorted out by burning moss to create a strong smoke, however it’s still annoying having to deal with the tougher midges that’s more tolerant to smoke. Anyway it was my pleasure giving you the shout out you deserve for such an inspiring channel, I actually had to edit it slightly as I kept rambling on about your adventures and I didn’t want to spoil it for your future viewers, I tend to ramble on a lot, about everything, hahaha, anyway hope you enjoyed it.

Wild Man I understood you perfectly. It is short but comprehensive which is always great to keep an easily distracted audience (like me) focused, I think. Elaine did a good job! I don’t think I’ll go full bushcraft yet if I manage to get myself to camp in the woods. I will likely be on my own as my friends aren’t really into this. Having no tent will feel a bit too exposed. I don’t mind doing it in the mountains but I find the woods a little spooky at night..at least if I’m sleeping in a tent, a potential nutcase wouldn’t know whether it’s a bigger Begbie that’s inside the tent. If that makes sense?

Nice video mate, just reinforced what I thought of how to find it. You were correct on the tree ID, from what I saw surrounding you I believe that it would be a Sitka spruce! This is evedent from the little platelets that pop off the bark. Thanks again!

I’m really glad you enjoyed it. Yes, by spending more time in this woodland I’ve came to learn the ID process for spruce. Very handy tree to have around. Stay safe and stay tuned ✌🏼❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Great video clearly demonstrating fatwood and how to use it - thanks for creating. I did wince at you using the blade of the knife to strike the rod! Unless you have a striker, no other choice if your knife has a domed back I suppose!

Renwick Customer thanks very much. I hate using the blade too however as you said the spine was rounded and it’s also a knife I don’t mind damaging the blade. Thanks for watching ✌🏼❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You can file a flat edge on that nice knife and save the blade and sharpening time.

Great video, thanks for this information I’m new to bushcraft and struggling a bit with fire lighting. It’s hard to get the fire going with materials that aren’t completely free of moisture. I’ve been trying to find standing deadwood but still it feels a little wet. Any advice would be great.
@WildManFrizzell
@WildManFrizzell 3 года назад
Planned preparation is the key. Dry your tinder prior to going out. Cut away the wet outer bark to be left with dry inner wood. Try that. Also try feather sticks.

I don’t know why finding fatwood in the UK is different than in the US pine trees should be the same the stumps and heartwood is where the most fatwood is found why waist time on branches that only has a little in them

Honestly your the type of person that doesn't deserve tools you'd probably let them rust tbh that's just fucking horrible what you did to the blade

You are mistaken, however thanks for your opinion.
