Located in South Australia, Coober Pedy was discovered in 1915. This is where most of the "white/milky" and Crystal Opals are mined. Coober Pedy is the main producer of white Precious Opal.
The public fossicking/prospecting area is open to anyone wanting to find their own Precious Opal.

Oh Liz and Wally, I love what you do. In 2010 I was over in Sydney visiting my Sister Flora (I am Scottish, live in Glasgow). There was this wee elderly couple who stayed next door to my Sis, June and Eric who used to do the same as both of you. June was also, like yourself Liz, a lapidarist. She showed me all of her work and had her collection in cabinets. They were without a doubt, in my mind, two extraordinary people. If I had lived next door to June and Eric I have no doubt I would have taken an interest in the exact same thing. They both lived well into their 80’s and 90’s respectively. I’ll never forget them.

Hi Zesty, Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. It certainly is a very rewarding hobby. To us, it is a great escape from city life and gets us to appreciate all nature has to offer be it scenery or gemstones. Hope at some stage that the opportunity arises for you to maybe have a go at this hobby. All the very best, Liz

I lived and worked in Coober Pedy for a few years. It was fun searching for and finding one's own gems. Not always easy to find the really nice colourful ones all the time and you can end up a bit dusty too... but still fun and interesting at the end of the day..

i will give you guys a tip if you are just passing through and want to find some opals but don't want to get rich go to the public fosicing area at night with a uv or black light and the opals glow 10mins you will have a hand full to show friends just off the top of the ground and if you take a shovel who knows what u might find good luck and have fun

I realize this video is 9 years old now, but it’s the first time I’ve seen it. And I’ve got to say, I am soooo jealous !!! You get to drive out to the Opal mines and fossick for opals ! That’s something I will never get to do. I live in Nebraska, smack dab in the middle of the USA and the only thing I’ll find here is dirt and corn. 🥲 Oh how I wish I lived in Australia or even just had enough money to visit for a month. My bags would be so full of Opal I’d have to hire a forklift to load them on to the plane coming home lol. Hey, good luck though, and keep them hits a coming ! Can’t wait to see what you dig up next ! God Bless You

Now i know for sure , my dad bought me a ring like 10 years ago still wear it. Beauty of a ring a real manly ring with onyx and like i said now i know for sure with opal. Mine is really like baby blue with glistnings of green yellow and red. Its like looking at the milkyway or something.

So the follow through to "how to find opals" is just to go to where opals are and pick them up. Got it.

Hi Liz. Just watched a couple of your opal videos -- they are beautiful stones, aren't they! (maganda, yes?) Was also good to meet you both at the river recently -- and to chat around the campfire :)

Thanks for watching Ian. Great trip to put on your bucket list and almost as much fun as finding those one ounce nuggets. Hope the gold is being kind to you and looking forward to your next video. All the very best, Liz

I really like your videos and would love to ask you some questions bc I want to visit next March. I was hoping to get some advice about guides, traveling by myself and general location and safety queries.

Liz, I know this video is old, but I wonder what treatment you have to do for the opals so they no longer need to be kept in water? I love your videos. Last summer, you inspired me to start making wire wrapped jewelry! My hubby refuses to retire so we can travel and find and grind and polish stones. I buy my stones on eBay. Pretty reasonable. I buy beautiful pendant beads and cabochons. I seldom pay more than $2.00 American. I’ve made 40-50 pendants so far, and given most away to family members. It is a fun and relatively inexpensive pastime for me, and the pendants are much loved by the recipients.

Hi Patti, Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. I'm happy to know that my videos have inspired you into making jewelry. Very rewarding hobby and can also be profitable in the long run. With regards to your question regarding Opal treatment... As you know, Opal has a certain percentage of water content depending on where it came from. Some opal will crack if kept in a very dry environment. Where I live, we have an average of 66 percent humidity. I keep my opals in a box with no water and are fine but I've had an accident with an opal pendant placed in a jewelry box for a few years with a sachet of silica desiccant. When discovered, it had some light cracking on it. A friend of mine had the same thing happened to her opal ring. So to answer your question, as long as you live in an area with certain amount of humidity, no treatment or soaking in water for your opal is necessary and don't put your opal in a box with a moisture absorbent. Wishing you a Happy New Year. Cheers, Liz

'She shows 'How to fined opals- and she is very good in finding. Wouldn't you think, that having a water sprayed on would show much more and easier to spot potch and colour, when wet.
