Great Video. Thank you! I have sewer gas and my plumber had no idea what to do. I think I found the "ONE" person on the island where I live who can do the smoke test. He is not taking customers but will "Try" to help me in a few weeks! I wish you video went on to show how the leaks are remedied. Open the walls? New Piping everywhere? I'm renovating a house I bought. First flip of my life. While tearing up the old flooring in a bedroom closet, I noticed a sewer smell. The bedroom is not close to the bathroom and shares no walls with the bathroom. I can't for the life of me figure out what's going on. Anyway, this was an interesting video, and that's a lovely home, too. Glad you figured out the problem.
What is the cost of simply replacing some of the traps that may be failing? It would seem that treating the affected area would be way less expensive than running a test that could cost thousands. The toilet had already been caulked and the ring replaced, therefore the shower drain was (not surprisingly) the smoking gun.
I’m in a condo and have a unit above me that’s been revovating. For the last 2.5 months I’ve had sewer smell when AC KICKES on. This seems to be my issue- I’ve had many professionals here and no one can find an issue. My condo association just had a plumber run the camera in the sewer pipes and said there was no break or no back up. This baffles me! My question is if I were to hire someone to do the smoke test do I need access to the upstairs condo because they may have busted something loose. Thank you for feedback
Hello Sue! Sorry your having to deal with this. This is going to take someone with the right experience to pin point the issue. In a condo structure, running camera typically don’t scratch the surface of finding the source. I wouid find someone who does smoke testing, but you may need to do your unit and the upstairs unit, while your A/ c unit is on.

Hello Experts.... I have a question regarding the sewage smell... I moved into a new house about a year and a half ago and since we moved in every time we use the washer it starts to smell like sewage. Our builder since the beginning said it was because the water on the trap was there for a while and that is what is smelling. Which doesn't make sense since the trap needs to have water in order to keep gases from going into the house. What do you recommend... the builder doesn't even come to see the problem at all
Ahhh I just want to know why I randomly smelled a chlorine smell in my garage !! I turned off my heat as it was running ( but my heat runs a lot I’ve never smelled that before ) … was I just smelling my laundry or was I actually smelling a gas ?? I’m gonna leave my heat off for tonight . I’ll turn the heat back on tomorrow once the kids are all at school , if I smell that smell again I’m contacting my landlord asap
There is a simple solution for traps drying up or just not being used.... fill with water and put 1 cup of vegetable oil down the drain. The oil will float and form a film so water below will not evaporate.
I have a 1955 ranch home with mostly all original larger pipes made of cast iron and smaller for lines are copper, 3 sinks have the newer ABS plastic. The smell in the house is just terrible. I've moved here 2 months now and I can barely stay in here. I've asked locally for plumbers that do this and they don't even seen to know what I'm talking about. I'm willing to try anything DYI but mostly in not certain I have those vents on my roof... How could I help myself before I suffocate in winter 😃
@@rstjohnwwell, I'm having that problem. Main sewer line is cracked across the entire top of the line that is not buried. Smoke test being done today (five plumbers later) 😮
Cool didn't know you guys do plumbing... I have a similar issue but I can't find the culprit. That poured peppermint oil down one of the event stacks on the roof and I can tell where the smell is coming from but it looks like I need to cut into the walls or drywall. That's where I'm lost at but then again I didn't do that smoke test.
I'm learning most of these folks never put in any of our homes equipment properly. None of the ptraps are installed properly and or if any at all. Our ac unit did not have a drain pan and they had the condensation line running into the sewer...from 2016 to 2024 I complained and begged telling these folks something is wrong I smell gas. Now I have autoimmune disease, severe health problems. Find out mold in air handler, all over coils. Pulled the unit from closet in hallway. Mold all over walls. And guess what. Pipe was busted that went from ac into the pipe leading to the sewer in floor 😳.. and no ptrap as well. So got expensive fancy new ac duct work all the bells and whistles and what do they do...connected the primary drain into the bathroom sewer stack going out the attic. I smell gas what do they say..oh we will come put a ptrap in to make your wife happy. 😠 I said I don't need to be happy I need to be satisfied knowing you did your job to code. And I studied Everthing. I sit in this chair and watch every you tube video for HVAC classes took notes and more. Over a week of studying to learn all these 💩 men have no idea what their doing, so they do whatever 🙄 because they figure who's gonna check their work. ME!!! I'm almost 51..the ptrap is incorrect and on the secondary line the didn't have it running nowhere. It's all in the attic now. So they come run a line, took 2 hours. Just to do it wrong. It's NOT to code. Am I really gonna have to pay inspector to hold them accountable. These fools don't listen. And don't care. Their taught to say mildew, cause they can't say mold legally. All them gonna die from this mess. Just cause they don't right away doesn't mean anything. They don't understand the pain until it arrives. They don't even know where it comes from because their to (I want say it) BUT THEY ARE. INNOCENT KIDS SUFFER BECAUSE NOBODY HAS INTEGRITY ANY LONGER. 😢 😭 WELL I KNOW THEIR ARE SOME GOOD ONES OUT THERE. !?! RIGHT. Dear God I hope so.
In India we wont do these kind of smoke which is very costly and we just change the drain holes to a type called Cockroach Trap Drain(Rs 255) where always water will be there so there will not be foul smell afterwards.. very low cost fix
I need you guys to travel to michigan. 😌we’ve had a sewer smell for years and no one can figure it out and can’t find anyone to do a smoke test in our area. We’ve had plumbers try a dozen different things to figure it out with no luck.
My house is a 2017 you mentioned a floor drain in laundry room don't have one my house I purchased new with so many issues it smells bad they never caulked around toilets which you mentioned in video
Envision this.. The way a carburetor works..air passes through a venturi drawing fuel up from the carburetor bowl.. Now picture your plumbing vent on your roof this is your carb jet..very windy days it draws your fixtures trap water(shower,toilet,sinks,laundry) right out of the trap into main stack draining to waste..trap is now useless/empty or almost empty..sewer gas is now able to pulsate out of fixture with fluctuations of wind. Now you be stank .
Great question.... I think the answer will determine if I move forward on having a smoke test. What's the point if you have no solution and I have a feeling whoever they call will prob just do whatever and say, yea its fixed BUT is it. What need another smoke test now. Geez. It's so dang complicated for all these folks to be on one page. (Heads) you don't know if more smoke is being blown at ya or what. But somebody got paid, so 🤷 is it FIXED 😢 😭
Google ptraps under kitchen sink. That will give you idea what your looking for.. start off by making sure you even have one. And if soo is it the right kind. Also the dishwasher.
Sewer gas smell in bathroom, got worse after Today, plumber conducted a smoke test and it was negative....no breach in "sewer system". The test was conducted through our "pumpout" as it was called. We are on city sewer.
Hey Experts, need someone in the SF Bay Area. We've been dealing with this issue for a couple of years and tried all the basic stuff but can't find the cause. I need help. I have had 3 plumbers come to my home, and none of them can find the sewage smell. One told us to replace the sink (which is NOT the source of the smell, it's coming from UNDER the sink), one said it's probably a dead animal in the wall (animals don't take 3 months to decompose), and another did a smoke test but didn't find a leak. I don't know what to do. I called a 4th plumber who says I need to have someone remove all the drywall and expose all the piping before they'll come out to help. That's going to cost me a fortune. What do I do at this point??
Sometimes bathroom sinks with overflows harvest bacteria in the overflow drain. If it’s just in the sink then I would use a cleaning solution and fill up the sink to clean that overflow drain out and kill any bacteria that’s in there.
Great video! I own a condo on the top floor of a tower (14th floor). Sewage smell comes and goes, p-traps have been checked, any chance I can do a smoke test being in a tower? I have roof access. Thanks!
If the shower stinks even though it is used and the trap should be full, the trap is missing and you can see this in the basement. Just have a plumber put a trap into the line. If the laundry room stinks, the trap in the laundry room floor is most likely missing some water. Water can evaporate out of the traps and then the smell comes. Just add a glass of water every 3 days to the floor drain to fill the trap. Many kitchen sinks are missing traps that could have been put in at a location near the person doing the dishes. The lady doing dishes breaths stinky bacteria odor each time she does the dishes. The plumbers hate women I guess.
@ Twin Home Experts I have recently had 2 bathrooms completley remodeled with nothing but issues. Besides the leaks etc the new smell of sewage hits you like a ton of bricks in the basement and sometimes upstairs. He came today after a month and said something about a studor vent but said it's already vented left and never came back. Hopefully I can get a plumber out asap to see what's going on. Is this available everywhere?

Good question! Unfortunately a wetting agent won’t flow through the plumbing system. Your better off getting a smoke candle and shop vaccum. You light the smoke candle in a metal canister, tape it to the bottom of the vaccum, then start the vacuum up with the discharge hose into the sewer pipe:
I usually just take it straight to the dome. We have h2s alarms. The worst is the pee thats been sitting there for weeks, not the poop. My god, what have i done with my life??? Lol i don't even get paid enough to do what i do! I quit....jk.
