How to find shells. Captiva & Sanibel Island shelling.

How to find shells is a question I get a lot. In the summer, the winds change the the shells tend to hide a bit, so going in the water to find them is a very good idea. I wanted to try snorkeling and I brought my trusty sand flea scoop, so Captiva was the first stop and just across a small bridge is Sanibel, so I decided to try my luck over there too.
I will show you 3 different methods I used to find shells. Answering the question, how to find shells isn't always as straightforward as it may seem. Tides, winds, location and water conditions all play a factor.
I hope you learn a little and have a better idea how to scoop in order to find shells.

@@SWFBeachLife They are smaller than what I've seen you find. The largest is an inch and a half and the smallest a half inch. The colors were white to grey and two had yellow streaks. All are beautiful though. Thanks again.

I so appreciate the way you show all of us how to shell it can not be easy scooping and filming with one hand to bring us all with you . I really love “beach time” it so reminds me of when my family and I were there this past Thanksgiving. It was cool enough to shut off the a/c and open up the windows and fall asleep to the crashing of the waves. Cant wait till this year to be able to do it all again.

6:45 in is one of the prettiest calico scallops I've ever seen! Very unusual. When I first saw the water, I was wondering how you were going to snorkel and see anything. Good call to wait. I'm always happy to vicariously enjoy all your pretty scallops. 😃 Very cool video of the rays. Don't think I've ever seen that kind. The "prune fingers" were cracking me up! Thanks, Sharmon! xxoo

I have just discovered you a few days ago and have maybe watched half of your videos so far. I want to thank you and let you know how much you are helping me. This isn't meant to be a pity party but I am currently on the waiting list for a new organ and suffer from extreme fatigue. My days are spent dealing with doctors and lawyers and I have begun to start having small panic attacks just when I try to relax. Watching your videos of the beach and shelling are so relaxing and enjoyable they are almost like therapy. I don't have the ability to contribute to you on Patreon right now but I wanted you to know how much I appreciate you. I've always wanted to go to Sanibel and someday, after getting a transplant and regaining my strength, I plan to do just that but for right now I have your channel. So, again, thank you for allowing me to accompany you on your lovely outings.

Hi my beach friend, Wat an amazing haul!!😍 The scoop is worth it's money. But you had to work hard to get all these gorgeous shells. 💪🏻 The rays were an amazing sight! Can imagine how awesome it would have been when the water was clear. But maybe next time. I'm very curious how shelling will go when you can use the snorkeling equipment. Girl, you really live in the garden of Eden. What an amazing sight to see that sea with all it's critters. Thank goodness we have warm weather at the moment in the Netherlands (79 °F) 😎 but I'm really missing that gorgeous sea. Wishing you a wonderful week! Sending lots of love from the Netherlands xoxo❤

Turns out it was one of my viewers! She figured out who I was and we have since met and chatted. Small world right? I do indeed live in paradise. I met a few other shells who are locals and we all said the same thing. It's truly paradise living down here! I'm glad your weather is warming up! @SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 года назад
I live about 15-20 minutes from Sanibel, but it takes me about 30 minutes to get all the way over to Bowman's Beach. The closest beach is Bunche Beach and I can have my feet in the sand about 15 minutes after I leave my driveway. It can get crazy crowded down here in the winter at the beaches, so I live in the perfect spot to be able to enjoy the beaches all year long and not sit in traffic every time I want to go somewhere :)

Any mollusk that produces a shell can produce a pearl. But, naturally occurring pearls are rare, found in perhaps one of every 10,000 animals. There are some clams that can produce pearls too. They're so interesting!

I'm either completely immune or the places I go don't have them! I almost never am bothered by them. However, keep in mind I'm usually not sitting on the beach. Would you suggest Marco island or Cato costs for the best shelling adventure? We haven’t had any luck at our beach on North Fort Myers Beach. We’re looking for a trip this week, and thought I would ask your opinion.
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 года назад
I would first recommend you try the south end of the island. Maybe take the trolly down by The Wyndham or The Outrigger and walk south (to the left) and see if that helps. I have never been to Cayo Costa and I'm trying to plan a trip there but the weather has been thwarting me so unfortunately I can't really say what it would be like. Marco is definitely an option but I haven't been there in a while and not sure how the shelling would be. Sorry I'm not being very helpful but I would hate to send you off on an adventure and have you disappointed!

If you don’t mind me chiming in, I was in Marco first week of May and found a lot of shells I shelled at south beach and tiger tail. A lot of walking at tiger tail, however, there is a lagoon you can cut through if you don’t mind walking in waist high water. Definitely wear water shoes. Took home angel wings, turkey wings, turbans shells, whelks, shark eyes, of course Florida fighting conks, so many you just walked bye them, and of course sand dollars. @SWF beach life. Thank you again for an amazing video. I too look forward to them every week. I love the unique turban shells. And I believe I have a button shell. Well, Sanibel in November is absolutely fantastic! That time of year really any place should give you pretty good stuff, but I'm more familiar with the beach in-between Bowman's and Blind Pass and there's no hotels or condos or anything up that way. The closest thing I can think of is the Castaway Cottages, but I understand they can be quite pricey. If I had to guess how long is a typical walk, I would say it's 3.5 to 4 hours and I usually walk about 5 miles or so. And I remember that feeling! Just 5 more feet, just one more shell. This may not have been spectacular shelling, but it was at least somewhat Sanibel-esque. Right now, I'm on the south side of Sanibel, about a mile from the lighthouse, and there is NOTHING. I mean, it looks like someone came through with a shell-Zamboni and swept away every last shell and shell fragment, other than Ponderous Arks. There's sand and arks. Period. My friends are now beginning to think I completely made up how amazing Sanibel is for shelling. I've noticed that the wind is almost directly west-to-east, so is it possible that a.) the wind/current is simply blowing the shells right past us (as opposed to directly at us, as one might expect if the wind/current was blowing north)?..and b.) that beaches like Bowman's, Blind Pass and Turner's will have shells, since the wind/current is blowing directly at those shorelines? And would Ft. Myers beach potentially be different? Right now, this is like shelling at the Jersey Shore, which is like looking for truffles in Antarctica. Any observations or suggestions?
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 года назад
I was at South FMB on Sunday and it was pretty bleak. That being said I did pretty good Saturday at Lover's Key with a shell friend. The winds in the summer do indeed keep the shells out off shore, so my suggestion would be to get in the water and feel around with your feet. Do you have a scoop? They are SO helpful this time of year. A few storms have blown through. Hopefully it will churn something up for you. I believe you - the shells are seriously starting to hide now and I have to get REAL creative to find any goodies! Best winds are NW and currently they are SSW so the shells are buried out there. Try to go out in the water at lowest tide as possible. I met a woman who found a big buried lightning whelk at the Sundial Resort but she said she almost drown trying to dig it up! Sending shell thoughts your way!

@@SWFBeachLife Thanks much for taking the time to reply. Went out at low-tide last night, and it was more of the same. Nothing but arks. A lone foot-long eel who seriously appeared to be on his last leg...and arks. A bazillion arks. I found Amelia Earhart, Jimmy Hoffa, Waldo and 3 Holy Grails, but not a single fighting conch, olive or whelk. :-( BTW, does a "NW wind" mean the wind is come _from_ the Northwest? Or does it mean the wind is blowing _to_ the Northwest?

@@dantheman5745 A NW wind means the wind is coming from the Northwest. We tend to have those type of winds in the winter, which increases the shells and the luck of finding shells. I am scared at what I will find or won't find on my next trip - eek!!
