This descriptive statistics video tutorial explains how to find the interquartile range and any potential outliers in the data. You need to calculate the first and third quartiles in order to calculate the IQR. Q1 is the median of the lower half of the data and Q3 is the median of the upper half of the data.

Some very clear examples of calculating Lower and Upper Quartiles. The Quartile calculation is one of the most confusing and ambiguous in mathematics. There is more than one formula used for calculating Q1 and Q3 and they give slightly different answers.

what if Q1=4 and Q3=16 min=-3 and max=22 also IQR IS 14 lower fence i get 17 and upper fence i get 5 IS THIS NORMAL? lower fence to be bigger than the upper fence? also these are the following data points--> -3,-1,3,5,6,8,9,12,14,15,16,16,20,22

I have followed the same method in an exam, but my answers was wrong. When I go through some research I found some formula like Q1=(n+1)/4 th term, Q2=(n+1)/4 the term, Q3=3/4*(n+1) th term. In this case the answers were different. When I started calculating using this formulas, for above 2 example in this video for Q1 i got Q1=3.25 th term. 3.25 th term means do i have to take average of 3rd and 4th terms or do i have to do interpolation. Which method is right?

i'm trying to help my son with finding interquartile range and i understand it of course, but i don't understand the purpose of finding the median of the entire set of numbers first? you don't need it to divide the data into upper and lower halves (either you have an even set of numbers you divide in half, or you have an odd set and you divide in half leaving out the middle number which you know is the median by default). but why purposely deduce the median when trying to find the interquartile range? you don't use that number at all when finding the answer.

@chankinwah1963
@chankinwah1963 4 года назад
Hi, i was just wondering if there is another method of calculating the lower and upper quartiles...which results in a different answers. Please refer to this video...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2N8ro3fTINY.html If i use that method i will get the lower quartile as 5.75 ...but your method gives 6? Actually i used Excel to calc the same set of data and i also got 5.75 also. I am confused because a lot os statistics text books actually use ur method of computation. But some do use the other. Just wondering which method is correct. Hope u can shed some light into this . Thanks in advance for your help.
