What if they have no number pairs? like 35 7 x 5 only what do you circle?
@tiavee
@tiavee Год назад
Since both numbers are prime, you essentially multiply 7 and 5 and get the product of 35. If you're listing the multiples of 7 and 5, what's the first number they have in common? Also, there's no need to use factor trees because the only factors for 7 are 1 and itself. The only factors for 5 are 1 and itself. 1 is neither prime nor composite, so don't worry about it; multiply 7 and 5 together.

I didn't understand uhh..... Using listing method the LCM of 8 and 12 is 24 and if i use Prime factorisation It shows that the LCM of 8 and 12 is 36 but when i googled it it shows the LCM is 24
@tiavee
@tiavee Год назад
Hmm, I wonder how you got 36. The prime factorization for 8 is 2*2*2, and the prime factorization for 12 is 2*2*3. Therefore, the LCM is 2*2*2*3 = 24. I'm sure you figured it out a while ago, but this comment might help someone else.

One thing I wish I had known is if you have to take the highest of EACH of the factors, so if there are 3 different numbers like 2,3, 5, you take the highest of each. If there is 2,3,5,and 7 you have to take the highest of each and multiply them. Our textbook only gave an example like this with 2 and 3.
@benburleigh6379
@benburleigh6379 2 года назад
Thank you! Just one question: why do we only include multiples of the prime factors ... what is really happening there?
@tiavee
@tiavee Год назад
We only include multiples of prime factors because the ultimate goal is to find the smallest number among them. As far as prime factorizations are concerned, we use them to find the lcm of numbers so that later on, we can add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
