To find the correct oxidation state of in (NH4)2SO4 (Ammonium sulfate), and each element in the molecule, we use a few rules and some simple math.
First, since the (NH4)2SO4 molecule doesn’t have an overall charge (like NO3- or H3O+) we could say that the total of the oxidation numbers for (NH4)2SO4 will be zero since it is a neutral molecule.
----------
GENERAL RULES
Free elements have an oxidation state of zero (e.g. Na, Fe, H2, O2, S8).
In an ion the all Oxidation numbers must add up to the charge on the ion.
In a neutral compound all Oxidation Numbers must add up to zero.
Group 1 = +1
Group 2 = +2
Hydrogen with Non-Metals = +1
Hydrogen with Metals (or Boron) = -1
Fluorine = -1
Oxygen = -2 (except in H2O2 or with Fluorine)
Group 17(7A) = -1 except with Oxygen and other halogens lower in the group
----------
We know that Oxygen usually is -2 with a few exceptions. When Oxygen is in a peroxide, like H2O2 (Hydrogen peroxide), it has a charge of -1. When it is bonded to Fluorine (F) it has an oxidation number of +1.

But why you didn’t multiply (NH4)2 by 2? am confused bcoz in other video there was Ni(OH)2 and you multiplied by 2

In this compound we are interested in the oxidation numbers of the atoms in each polyatomic ion. Since the Ammonium ion is always NH4 + we'd get the same answer if we multiplied by two or just looked at one Ammonium ion (N would be -3 either way). But for Ni(OH)2 we are looking for the oxidation number of the Ni. This is a transition metal and we have to look to what it is bonded to, the (OH)2 to find it's oxidation number. You asked a very good question and I hope I was able to explain it clearly!

But how did you know NH4 is +1 and SO4 is -2? How can I calculate this or where do I can find it?

Really it's just memory: Memorizing Polyatomic Ions: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vepxhM_bZqk.html Some teachers let you use a table of polyatomic ions to look them up (check with your instructor). It's best to memorize the key ones (see the above video) to save time on tests. --- Dr. B

WE KNOW NITROGEN CAN NOT MAKE MORE THAN 3 BONDS , AS IT'S SIZE IS SMALL , THEREFORE NH4- IS THE COMPUND AND ITS MEMORY AND WE KNOW SO42- EXIST

Hey why u don't calculate SO4
@wbreslyn
@wbreslyn 3 года назад
That's because it is so common in compounds that I made a video just for it so I don't have do it over multiple times. See ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WR5uwhA6Nmc.html

It's oxidation state is -3 actually 😶

You are right! Oxidation states have the - in front. It's ionic charge that it goes after the number. Most instructors don't seem to mind but it is good to follow the convention. --- Dr. B
