As a guitarist, you have your choice of hundreds of different types of picks. How do you tell which one is best? It’s not just about how a pick feels in your hand. It’s also about the sound the pick creates on the string. In this video, I take a look at more than 10 popular guitar picks on the market and show you how they all create slightly different tones, some brighter, some darker, some slappier… you get the idea. I made a change in the last few months and have come to love the black XL Series Jazz III. The red Jazz picks are too small for me, but I love the beveled edges and fine point. They facilitate playing lighter/softer, something you instruct in another lesson. Playing more lightly aids my speed, articulation and control. I like the Jazz III far better than flat picks, a complete turn-around for me. I used to want snap in the pick, the Jazz glides over the strings. Rock player who aspires to play a few jazz lines one day, btw, but the same principal applies in this case. My favorite guitar channel on YT, thanks, Rich.

Thanks for posting this Rich! Really helpful! I like D'Andrea 1.5mm andf the Tortex Flex 1.5mm, both sound really sound good! I like using my thumb/fingers as well!

I found a large no brand tear drop about 1mm thick that is pure magic for me. I found a handful a few years ago and guard them like gold since I can’t find them anymore. For me the pick makes all the difference in tone.

Nice video! Again a very interesting and important topic. For about 10 years now I’ve been using Fender 351 Medium celluloid picks. I like celluloid because it gives you a natural sound. Its clear, transparent and does not mess with your guitars tones as much. Also the medium gauges that fender makes are a little stronger then most. And your right about the extra heavy, they swallow a lot of the guitars volume. I have to try the dunlop and Clayton that you showed though!

Best flat picks I ever found are small black jobbies about the size of Fender jazz picks. They are called Pee Wee picks manufactured by Fred Kelly Thumb Picks. Order direct or look for a Fred Kelly dealer.

I mainly play with fingers, but i use only Dunlop Ultex jazz 3. Snappy, smooth, good grip, stiff and size big enough.

Once you've chosen a pick, use it to examine what Rich is playing so effortlessly. Lots of clever stuff going on, especially for any rockers trying to find a bridge into jazz guitar. Here it is: bebop in a box (a video box).This what a 12-bar blues looks and sounds like in jazz. The main riff is based on a C minor pentatonic (just like Clapton, etc.) but using 5th form with the b5 note tossed in to get the bluesy edge without bending. Genius stuff.

1.5 ProPlec home plate picks with a hole drilled in the middle is my choice for a classic tone

I've tried many picks since I started playing last year and so far my favorite is the Dunlop Flow 1.0mm. It's a mid-size pick with just enough of a point and a raised logo that helps with grip control.

@@RichSeversonGuitar Yes, they are a little bit wider on top than a standard pick so it has the feel of being bigger without the extra size, and just the right amount of grip control from a slight raised logo.

A little late. In both ways. Here I am trying to get up to speed on your Have You Met Miss Jones solo using my thumb, and what happens is my forearm gets cramped after a while. So, once again, thinking of trying a pick. But your pick exercise you showed would be a great lesson/ practise exercise.Let me know if you have any content on that.

You’re showing the names, but often not showing the tips! The tip that is hitting the strings is the most important part of this… for me, the Tortex is my fave material… but the optimum shape is the Ernie Ball Prodigy Sharp. That pointed tip allows you to be extremely nimble. Now that I’m used to pointed tips, I can’t go back to rounded tip picks.

Good video! Over the past 50 years I have experimented with about every pick imaginable. I have used the Fender 351 teardrop style picks for nearly 40 years. I started on Fender 351 thins for the first 10 years. Then Fender 351 celluloid mediums for about 20 years. I now use the 'Jim Dunlop' 351 style 60mm 'Tortex' picks and love them. They are easier to grip, give me a nice smooth tone for Jazz and work well for Rock and Country and they last. Plus, the orange color makes them easy to see on a dark stage. BTW, that is a gorgeous guitar, Rich!

Depends on the guitar, strings and musical style... Even a set of the same picks, they differ from one another, some sound good, have the perfect attack, some less...and you keep the best ones

I have trouble getting comfortable with a pick and I try out a lot of them. For those who don't look into things like this, guitar picks and get WILD. I've been trying some on the lower end of the wild side. Gravity, V-Picks and Bogstreet. I like most of them, but can't settle on one. When I play on Sunday morning I might change picks 3 times. At home the number increases exponentially. I want to find a brand and a gauge I can live with and get off this crazy train of guitar picks.

This may be lost in all the comments ... One I like a lot is the Dunlop Jazz (red nylon) They will last for ever. The red ones are easier to find if you drop it. Also to help hold onto them II made a little jig and I drill a hole thru them , try it .
