Finally someone else who actually uses column notation! I always thought that that notation made it much easier to add terms together, and the scalar product and vector product become a bit easier as well.
Beautifully done. With a bit of work, I (someone with the bare minimum of math education) was able to follow and implement the formulas here to help calculate hit detection between frames in a high speed VR game in the most performance sensitive way that is likely possible. I hope you're getting pleasure knowing that this video is still helping people 10 years later. This truly was the most approachable one I found, and I feel like I scoured the internet! i love the style in which you teach. You stress the important ideas (without having to memorize complicated formulas). And your diagrams make it look easy. you know how to make complicated problems simple , As far as teaching goes, this is A++. do you have a video on green's theorem.

10 years late but a slightly faster method is once you have b in terms of t to find the magnitude of it and complete the square to find the minimum value.
Great explanation but this method isn't applicable to more complicated questions like shortest distance between two lines or between a point and a plane
hello! may I ask what happens if t=0? for example line pass through a=1,1,3 b=2,1,4 and shortest distance to line from c=2,1,2 i got 2t = 0 and im stuck! a little help pls :)
idk if you still need help but it would be t = 0 on the line formed by a and b. If you did it how it shown in the video, you would have made a vector equation of the line created by the points. Find t = 0 in this equation. It would be either 1,1,3 or 2,1,4.
Unfortunately it seems you've forgotten to use brackets on your calculator since your final answer is wrong. 1-(3*(16/35)) is definitely not less than -1. I just wanted to point that out, though I'm sure you've already noticed since this video is, what? 4 years old?
no, point A is a point as such it has no direction vector. You can say that b is the coordinates of the line AX. The direction vector would be only the numbers next to the parameter t. Is this the answer you were looking for?
