What does average engagement time mean on the Events report?
Месяц назад
Engagement time reflects how long a user remains active on your site or app. More specifically, “average engagement time” in GA4 measures the average amount of time that users are interacting with your content, such as clicking, scrolling, or otherwise engaging. This is different from “time on page,” which in previous versions of Google Analytics simply measured how long the user had the page open, regardless of whether they were actively engaging with it. In GA4, the engagement time is more accurate because it measures actual interaction, making it a better metric for understanding how engaging your content is. If you need further clarification or details, feel free to ask!

Hi Søren, Is it correct to calculate engagement rate / Active users to get avg. Time spent on a page. Thanks
3 месяца назад
Thanks for you question. The answer is no; this is not the correct method. In GA4, the correct metric for average time spent on a page is the “Average Engagement Time per Session,” which is automatically calculated by GA4. You don’t need to manually divide the engagement rate by active users to obtain this metric. Instead, you should look at the predefined metrics in GA4 to get accurate data.

Hi Søren, I am looking at the average time that the users are on my homepage this year, because I need to find out when my pop-up newsletter should "pop up". It says Average engagement time is 0m 27s. Is that correctly understood that it is 27 seconds? Do you know what time should my pop-up newsletter pop up?

Yes, "0m 27s" indeed means that the average engagement time on your homepage is 27 seconds. When it comes to the timing of your pop-up newsletter, it's crucial to strike a balance between capturing user attention and not being intrusive. Since your average engagement time is 27 seconds, you might want to set the pop-up to appear just before this average time, to ensure most visitors see it. A good rule of thumb is to trigger the pop-up around 20 seconds after a user lands on the page. This gives them enough time to get a feel for your content, but not so much time that they're likely to have left already. However, it's important to keep in mind that the effectiveness of this timing can vary based on your audience and the nature of your website. It's a great idea to experiment with different timings and track the results. You can adjust based on the data you collect to find the optimal time for your specific audience. Hope this helps! Best, Søren

Søren definitely makes a good point here. I'd also suggest that it's likely a pop-up may perform better with more engaged users, so experimenting with seeing how long it actually takes to go through all the content on your homepage, and adding a pop-up after you'd assume someone has read ~75% of it could be something worth exploring. That way the pop-up shows to people who are truly engaged and more likely to sign up, especially after they've read some of the content on your page.

it's not time on page metrics, it's time per engagement (session)

Excactly. At the time of the recording it was the only metric GA4 gave that sort of resembled ToP 👌🏼
