How to find under ground pipes, lines and cables using divining rods or dowsing rod Call 811 JULIE or do this! Actually do both ad see how they work! Locating underground utilities.
Note: It's law that you call your local utility and they will come out. Most have a service they use. Again, call before you dig!
Dowsing rods.
1942: George Casely uses a hazel twig to attempt to find water on the land around his Devon farm
Traditionally, the most common dowsing rod is a forked (Y-shaped) branch from a tree or bush. Some dowsers prefer branches from particular trees, and some prefer the branches to be freshly cut. Hazel twigs in Europe and witch-hazel in the United States are traditionally commonly chosen, as are branches from willow or peach trees. The two ends on the forked side are held one in each hand with the third (the stem of the Y) pointing straight ahead. Often the branches are grasped palms down[citation needed]. The dowser then walks slowly over the places where he suspects the target (for example, minerals or water) may be, and the dowsing rod dips, inclines or twitches when a discovery is made. This method is sometimes known as "willow witching".
Two L-shaped metal wire rods
Many dowsers today use a pair of simple L-shaped metal rods. One rod is held in each hand, with the short arm of the L held upright, and the long arm pointing forward. When something is found, the rods cross over one another making an X over the found object. If the object is long and straight, such as a water pipe, the rods may point in opposite directions, showing its orientation. The rods are sometimes fashioned from wire coat hangers, and glass or plastic rods have also been accepted. Straight rods are also sometimes used for the same purposes, and were not uncommon in early 19th-century New England.
In all cases, the device is in a state of unstable equilibrium from which slight movements may be amplified.

This is a "technique" called witching, not to be trusted. This is why 811 and utility locators with legitimate equipment exist, you will have absolutely zero legal protection if you do this and start digging. If a utility company were to even see a locator marking lines by witching, not by hooking up to the utility itself, they will lose their job immediately. For someone about to dig, it's truly stupid to excavate without calling 811, especially since it's a free call

The guy making this video already advised to “call before you dig”, but sometimes, it’s just handy to find an underground wire quickly. e.g. my lights on my tree stopped working, and after checking all the obvious sources (breaker, switches & plugs), I’d now like to take a look at the buried wire to see if the chipmunks ate through it. I’m not excavating, or doing some major yard work here, just finding & following a wire from house to tree. So what does it hurt to give this divining method a try. So a big THANK YOU to the creator of this video..

I am speaking from my 35 years as a pipeline repair tech for one of the largest companies in the world that provides the best and latest tools available, I have used this method ONLY when I can not find and have no idea, I use it when I have a slight suspicion on a location, I dig by hand to locate , so I want to make the best decision before I excavate due to cost, trauma and time, it does NOT work 99 percent of the time and the 1 % it doesn't work either, if your going to a major cost to dig use everything available to you and use this to add to your very slight suspicion on where to dig

I'm a electrician for 29yrs and yesterday was the first time I saw this trick done by a lineman looking for a hand box to disconnect a underground service to change a meter socket. The box was buried in a flower bed near the street and he found it using this method I couldn't believe it. I thought he was b.s. ing me. I tried it myself when I got home using a couple of bare #8 copper pieces of wire and it worked on locating my 200a U.G. Service. Pretty neat trick you can always learn new things everyday!!!!

Not even 20 minutes later he used the rods to find buried cable line that hadnt been marked out, and Ill be damned if that line wasn't running right where his witchin' sticks said it'd be. I absolutely know dowsing rods work for this application. In 1980, I was an Electrical Engineering student Co-oping with a large Regional Power Company. Part of the job was working in the Planning Department which required Field work. When an older guy (55-60) pulled out his dowsing rods one day to locate buried wires and pipes, I was more than skeptical. I thought he had to be manipulating the rods until I tried it. I was absolutely shocked how accurate and reliably those dowsing rods could indicate where buried pipes and wires (either buried or overhead) were. It has to have something to do with the lines of flux. At any rate, I made my own rods and still have them somewhere. I have no idea whether water or gold can be found by dowsing but I know enough not to discount the possibility.

All the commenters that say this doesn't work haven't tried it. I just used it to find my underground poly water line. Just NOW. Empirical evidence trumps negativity. ETprepper, you just saved me a lot of money as I used this to detect the pipe around some soggy ground where the leak was. I didn't have to dig test holes all over the soggy spot... just one hole. Leak fixed. Thank you for this video.

This really works, a Southern California Edison Line man used this method to find underground utility on a job for back in 1997, he was spot on. I never forgot that day, think about it not, all electrical and running water produces an magnetic field the metal rods just line up with it. Thank you ETprepper for the refresher coarse.

It's hella wierd, I thought this was a scam when my dad showed me this but it actually works. I have no clue how tho... I thought it had something to do with electric fields from wires carrying current but it also worked for hollow cannals and waterlines. To test if it wasn't a subconcious suggestion I tried finding something I didn't know was there - a pipe at my neighbour's house and it worked too, he confirmed it.

I am 70 years old and I own a tree stump grinding business. I normally call in a locate if there is any doubt about buried lines. One of my customers told me had located his lines already. I arrived and he had marked the area with red paint lines where there were issues. He had been using dowsing rods. I was very skeptical and he showed me and let me try it. I was able to locate them as well. We went to an area where he had not marked and sure enough I found his phone lines. I was excited and hooked. When I got home, I made my own dowsing rods and couldn't find any utility lines. I know where they are but couldn't find a single one by dowsing. It is strange because it worked for me at his house and I had no idea where his phone line was.

I saw a plumber using this technique about 28 years ago. He was installing underground pipes and cesspools. He was using the rods to find the sewage lines underground. His rods were just like the coat hangers, but he had placed them in a wood or PVC handle to make it easier for him to grip. The wires rotated freely in the handles; he used the dowsing rods to locate the pipes, and then he used his backhoe to dig them up. I asked him about the dowsing rods; he could not explain why the worked...they simply did work...and he used them all the time. I was on the property performing tree work for several hours...he was very productive during that time. I have been reading Missing 411 by David Paulides. Something very strange is happening in our National Parks, people inexplicably go missing. I am wondering if the dowsing rods can be used to trace which direction people travel. I think there may very well be an electrical-magnetic component to the disappearances.

I did several experiments with Dowsing a few years ago. I am convinced it works as you have shown. I believe it has to do with a disturbance in geomagnetic fields. In my case I could detect 100% of the test locations if it included trenched or dug ground, (i.e. graves, field tile, cables, septic fields, sprinkler systems, etc.), even when no signs of their location were distinguishable. I found ghost town foundations buried in a pasture! I think changes in ground compression or the randomization of long polarized earth may be the catalyst for this phenomenon. How long this disturbance can linger I could not determine. I also have yet to attempt it where land has been back-filled and then trenched (dual disturbance). I'm not yet convinced I could reliably find natural ground water. I do not believe it is demonic or sorcery. However, I do think those that use crystal plum-bobs over maps to find treasures might be well suited for some of Colorado's alternative medications!

Theres 'something" to be said, the feelings you have in your gut, when standing over a roaring river, or stream on a bridge, and you can use your arm hairs, and "gut" feelings. These same feelings, transfer to finding rivers, lakes, septic tanks, etc. I'm thinking we ALL have these skills, just do not practice nor use them. I have found, people who can not "turn-off" their minds and relax, who have CONSTANT chatter agoing, in their thoughts can not do this- simply, they can not trust their own feelings. Children do it easily. And then there is Kweskan- (blows up yr magnetic idea), who- on Johnny Carson show, would go out to the Audience and find his hidden from view, paycheck-appearance fees- in purses, in pockets, behind curtains...once again Johnny was fluxed. finding papers, plastic, anything.

Another sure fire method to finding underground utilities is to take a backhoe and start digging randomly. If water shoots up from the ground you’ve located the water line. If you smell an odor of gas you’ve located the gas line and if the power goes out in your neighborhood then you’ve found the electric line. Works like a charm every time!

It works like a charm! All of you "non-believers" out there should use the time you spend to "knock it" in writing comments to belittle the fact should try it. I took two metal hangers and cut them so that I had approximately four inches by fourteen inches. I bent them at a ninety degree angle. I located (without knowing where they were previously) a pvc water line, a propane line and an electrical conduit.

As a utility locator I always recommend calling your state number for locates prior to digging. I.E. Colorado 811 as it is in my state. However, as an experienced locating "wiching" aka using dowsing rods does work. It is a last option before digging if unable to find a line when measurements and normal locate methods aren't working. But you should always pothole to find line prior to digging after performing this.

Great video on this. I myself, use dowsing for finding underground sewer and water lines for my job. I came to a few conclusion as to why it happens having to do with electromagnetism. The ground being the negative and the rods being positive. When walked over the desired find, it hooks up cause them to move. Sometimes being able to tell the flow of water. The gender difference has still made me scratch my head, the yin and yang Negative positive. Can't have one without the other. Some say its the iron difference in the sexes. Either way, I believe that even the dead still give off energy of some sort.

Been in the natural gas utility business for 35 years and this method does work but by no means rely on it ( verify, verify, verify and verify). For some reason it works better with some people than other people (?). When it comes to the utilities always have those professionally marked ; it's the law in the state of Missouri and most likely in your State too. Privately owned underground installations, proceed with Extreme Caution and know where all your shut-offs are (gas, water, electric and Etc) before you dig, in other words never rely on luck.

If you stomp your foot while over the pipe you will be able to determine the approximate depth. Each stomp roughly 1 foot. When you reach the correct number of stomps ypur rods will separate. @cardboardbox9977

This trick also tells you how deep the utility is buried. Once they turn inward, while still standing in the same place, stomp your foot to make them turn back outward. The number of times you have stomp your foot before they turn back out, is how many feet deep the utility is. For example, you walk over the utility and the hanger turns inward because of the magnetic field. You stomp your your foot once, then twice, then thrice. On that third stomp the hangers go back outwards. That means the utility is 3 feet deep. If you had to stomp your foot 4 times before it turned back outwards, that means the utility is 4 feet deep. I'm dead serious. I t works.
@wadebuck69

@cardboardbox9977 I learned about using my "witching sticks" about 25 years ago and working as a heavy equipment operator it has been a very handy thing to know. It was only about 5 years ago that a guy my company hired out of the hall showed me the stomping for depth trick. The only thing I would add to your comment is that let's say you stomped 3 times and nothing but the 4th stomp caused your sticks to move only halfway back to straight to where they form a cross then your target is 3 1/2 feet deep. If the sticks just move a less than forming a cross then target is more than 3 but less than 3 1/2. Same goes for if the sticks go almost back to straight but are still crossed a little at the tips target is more than 3 1/2 but less than 4. They really are that accurate. A couple years ago the company purchased a line locator like the utility locators use and there was a temporary power line direct buried to feed a panel for job trailers and we had to cross it with our storm sewer. The foreman pulls up that morning and gets the locator out of his truck I said we didn't need that because I had my witching sticks. He said yeah but this will tell us how deep it is I said so will my sticks. By then everybody close was listening so he bet me $20 I couldn't locate that power line and how deep it was so I started at the panel and about every 10 feet I painted a mark and a depth. It was 110 feet to the pole I marked it all the way. Then he went over it with the locator and every spot I had painted was within 2 inches of what the locator read. He didn't even argue over the 2 inch difference on a couple spots pulled out a $20 and handed it to me
