How to find you tongue weight on a CAT scale

In this episode, Mark explains what to do and what not to do when weighing your tow vehicle and trailer on the CAT scale. Weighing your setup is important for several reasons.
1. To ensure you do not exceed your Gross Vehicle Weight.
2. To know the weight of your vehicle and trailer.
3. To know what your tongue weight is. Having your trailer loaded correctly will allow you to go down the road safely.
Having a tongue weight that is too low is an indication your trailer is loaded incorrectly which will cause the trailer to wiggle from side to side while going down the road.

That's a super heavy ranger lol. Not that it matters to me at all but 6340 lbs exceeds our 6050 GVWR. Thanks for teaching, I can now do the same with my setup.

Just for simplicity this is how you should calculate. Let's say first reading you get A and B. A from the truck side which is truck axle plus tongue weight. You only get combined figure. B is your trailer axle. Which is less than trailer weight. So you don't know truck weight or trailer weight at this point. But A plus B is total weight of your rig. Say it is A+B. Then second measure is just your truck. Which is your true truck weight. Let's say C. Now to get all weights this what you do. Truck weight is simply C. Trailer weight is A+B -C. Which is total minus truck weight. Let's say that is R. Now tongue weight is A-C or R-B. They will be same. Thats tongue weight. Let's say T. Now ideally your T/R should be 10-15%. Hope that helps.

So what is your tongue weight number not your trailer weight but your tongue weigh?

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this. My thinking is that is you take your loaded drive axle minus you unloaded drive axle you would have a tongue weight of 540lbs. and according to your calculation it is 360lbs which is a difference of 180lbs. This also happens to be the difference in your steer axle weights. So comparing the drive axle weights my calculation is adding to the drive axles what has been taken off the steer axle. I don't know if this makes sense, I'm just trying to understand it and probably over thinking it. LOL

You may be over thinking it. Drive axle weight minus loaded drive axle weight. Tongue weight is not usually critical when pulling a camper. It is very important when pulling a cargo trailer or any other load where the weight and balance of the load varies. Best wishes and thank you for your contribution.

Is the tongue weight the same as the trailer weight? If not how do you figure out what the trailer weighs?

Your trailer will have a DOT sticker that displays the weight and other info. Or, when you're on the scales, the printout will give you the weight of the trailer axle.

How did your CAT Scale tongue weight calculation compare to the reading on your WeighSafe hitch?

The Weigh Safe hitch seems like a good idea, in theory, but did not accurately measure the tongue weight. This combined with the play in the hitch, which transmitted every bump in the road, makes the hitch a huge FAIL! In realty most people only have one or two trailers and the tongue weight of those trailers should not change much. We cannot recommend buying the Weigh Safe hitch.

No help at all. This would have been simpler and more understandable using a diagram than showing a truck/trailer driving over the scale from a distance and side view. ZERO HELP.
