I have only just recognized that my life has been the way it was because I had no Core values. I sat with this video and became fully aware of what they are and how important it is to me to hold these true now. Doing the LITMUS TEST only reinforced in me THE IMPORTANCE of allowing these to shine as MY ESSENCE. I appreciate this video more than you could possibly know. Look out world I have just arrived. I agree with all of the litmus questions except the one about stress. I have given up my core values in times of stress, because the stress was due to trauma. Especially for people with trauma, we give up our values in times of stress. It doesn't mean they aren't core values. It will always feel bad to give these up in times of stress. You know they are core values because it feels bad to give them up. You feel like you are going against your core, because you are. If they don't feel bad to give up, they aren't core values.

Thank you so much for watching and for your comment. When I created the stress question for the litmus test it was for everyday simple stressor, not trauma. Trauma stress is so much different from a psychological perspective and decisions made during traumatic experiences are not and should never be equated to simple stressors of life. There is deeper work to do with trauma and there should never be any judgement when working through this type of stress. Feeling safe and being able to heal is so critical. As the author of this litmus test, I give permission to anyone who is dealing with trauma to skip this question until you have healed your traumatic experience. ONLY use the stress question for general everyday stressors like missed deadlines, being late, feeling over extended...things that you can examine and choose to fix to keep your core value or change the value if you choose not to fix the stressors. I hope this explanation provided additional insight and when I update my workbook I will make sure to put a notation of this in it. Thank you.

Adriana, I liked your points about core values and how to know what your personal core values are. As I was going through your video, one thing I thought I didn't agree with was when you said that if I answered yes to any of the questions, it wasn't a core value. I thought of the question if you have ever lost a value when stressed. My thought process was that we aren’t perfect and a value lost may still be a core value. The important thing is that we keep with it trying to develop that value. I then had a light come on, perhaps seeing it more from your perspective. Maybe the value you lost during stress isn’t necessarily a core value, but perhaps determination is in reality the underlying value. No we aren’t perfect, but perhaps if we go through your test, maybe there’s a value we are missing underlying the value we thought was at our core. Thank you for sharing. This video really helped me in identifying my values.

In a perfect world, we would never sabotage our core values. In the real world, things like trauma, grief, and fear have a tendency to take over. Furthermore, if we have been controlled and abused by another, including religion and the workplace, we tend to not have access to our core beliefs and find our lives have been carefully crafted by someone and/or someone else. It is why so many of us live in great dissonance and search for videos on how to discover our core values and beliefs. We are not two dimensional creatures. I went to your list and found many descriptive words on characteristics. Among those were a few core words, such as fairness, bravery, and family. They fall into different core categories. For example, bravery is a core emotion that inspires action and defines the way we show up in life. Fairness would be more of a core belief, meaning everyone should be treated fairly, despite status, religion, political leanings, gender, etc. Fairness is demonstrated by several of the characteristics you listed, such as equality, accountability, ethical treatment, honesty, attentiveness,balance, etc. There is a massive difference between core values and beliefs and character qualities. Qualities won't always reflect our core values when under great duress. We'd like them to, but no one is perfect and we aren't the same in every given moment or day. This does not mean our core values are not real. It means we have violated them, just as many others have before. We learn to violate and hide our core values to survive. Though I do believe we can dig for those values by starting with characteristics and qualities that we like, such as the many provided on your list, it is important to understand the difference between a core value, core belief, and how those either show up or are covered up in our lives. If they are being covered up, as is the case for many, starting with generic qualities can help with the discovery process. This will often showcase how and when we are untrue to ourselves. I would like to add that core values and beliefs do evolve over time. As we gain life experience, what was once a core value in our earlier life may take on a different life later. For example, in my youth, I refused to respect authority unless it proved to be valuable and trustworthy. I believed most weren't. Giving people grace was not a priority, so proving one's right to authority was difficult. Sometimes impossible, depending on a particular position held. Today, I do not immediately dismiss those in positions of authority unless they make it a point to demonstrate unchecked power and privilege. In my youth, I believed most people in positions of authority were out to control and enslave me. Many were, and I was defenseless outside rebellion. Though I still hold this belief to a much smaller degree, I know there are many deserving people in positions of authority worthy of my support. One of my core values is fairness. Because of this, I do not believe people in positions of authority should be treated any better than anyone else. A core belief is that all authority and power should be questioned when necessary, which involves things like bravery, accountability and transparency. This keeps people and institutions in check and balanced. Sometimes a person may hold our life in their hands, literally. In order to survive, we might violate our core belief by holding our tongues. Do you see what I am getting at? Thank you for providing a starting place.

Hi Michelle. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I can see that this is an important topic to you based on your in-depth reply. I appreciate your perspective and I am sure others who may read your comment will find it useful. Please note that what is suggested in the video can and ought to be accommodated to suit individual needs. Think of it as guidance and insight. The ultimate goal for everyone is to reflect on their answers and to revisit identified core values until they find the one/s that resonate with their heart center, soul and inner wisdom. For some people this can be immediate and for others it may be a longer journey. There is no ‘right’ answer only what is right for each individual. Once a person finds their true core value it will stay with them as they will cherish it, be aligned with it and use it to make life decision with it. That is the ultimate end goal. Cheers.

I personally believe peoples core values should continuously evolve over their lives. Their is one thing that might count as a core value that has stayed constant throughout my life, and that is the refusal to believe that I can know what will be important to me in the distant future. It is the reason that I never got a tattoo. I knew in my 20's that I would not agree with the things I find most valuable to day when I was 70. I guess maybe my true core value is that my values will grow and change throughout my life as I learn more and more about the world and my place in this world.

I have a question. With the question, “have you lost any core value in times of stress?”, what if it’s a core value you admire but it’s hasn’t been implemented in your life before? For instance, I like the idea of self-improvement/self-growth but in the past, I’ve been a lazy person and chose comfort over working on myself. Should I cross it off my list since it’s something I’ve failed at in the past when times became tough or should I still consider it if it’s something I really wanna implement in my life?
@AdrianaGirdler
@AdrianaGirdler 4 года назад
Thanks so much for watching the video. Regarding your question....cross off core values that you ignore all the time and if you are honest with yourself only have due to pressure or expectation from others. Remember, core values are something you live 24/7, not when it’s just convenient. Now...the question I have for you is why do you chose comfort over self improvement? Is fear driving this response? The fact that you are asking the question is a good thing. You now have awareness of it. Decide now if self improvement is truly important to you. Will you at any point in time regret not connecting to yourself and being the best you can be? If you answer yes, put it back on your core value list and start living it. No more excuses. Otherwise take it off your list. Failing at a core value you do not resonate with will only set you up for failure. That is not the purpose of finding and living your core values. Hope this helped and all the best. Cheers. Ps: living core values, 24/7, in itself is self improvement.

I don’t know how much I agree with this after writing the questions down and really hearing what your saying about it in the video. I can see how some people can answer yes to these questions and still be living by there core values . For example : someone who values money or wealth , someone who values competition and innovation, maybe even someone who values grit and independence . I really have to really think about this video .

Hey! I loved this video. Thanks so much for putting it together. One question I had was, do you think it is good or reasonable to have any core values that are aspirational rather than purely descriptive? For example, there are some traits that I don't think I've always embodied in the past but that I would like to use as guideposts in the future. If you wouldn't call these core values, what would be a good way of thinking about them? Thanks!

Fantastic video, I love the steps. But, I personally disagree about keeping the same core values for the entirety of your life, as we grow older, we can experience life lessons and wisdom that may change our perspective on certain aspects on life, which may cause use to re evaluate our values
@AdrianaGirdler
@AdrianaGirdler 2 года назад
Thank you for watching. As we grow older we will learn and possibly look at this a bit differently. There are things we thought were important that many not be as much so. Having said that a core value is something we live by no matter age or circumstance. It’s the line in the sand that we draw. For example, if honesty is one of your core values, it is one you live by regardless of your age, life experiences or lessons learned along the way. Thanks for sharing and hope this helps differentiate between a value and a core value. Cheers!

Hey, I have a question. For the third question which was “do you still envision this core value holding true in 25 years?” I said yes for all my values which were improvement, thankful and organization. You said if I said yes to any of these questions then it’s not a core value. But wouldn’t it be a core value because I can still envision myself holding onto these values that are true to my heart? Wouldn’t that count as a good thing? I hope this makes sense, thank you💕.
@AdrianaGirdler
@AdrianaGirdler 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and thanks for your question. In the video I e planned that if you said yes to any of the litmus test questions then they are not your core values and you need to take another look. If you answered no to all the questions then those would definitely be your core values. Have another look at step 3 when you have a chance and hopefully that clears up your question. Wishing you all the best. Cheers!
