That process reminds me of my grad school work. I put cross scumbling lines all over then studied it for hours staring into it as images came out to make a scene. The crosshatch random lines intermingling prompts the brain and imagination and what is inside you will appear according to that. Like the brain has on and off switches. But to move to capture it before it fades is tricky. Not to worry because there's always this onslought from imagination

My drawing professor had us do something to similar effect. We drew the model with our arm and drawing pad behind us. This way it was a blind contour, and we couldn't peak. He also had us draw with things like cattle markers and huge oil pastels. Later, we would go back into the drawing and render up forms, or just do things to amplify the gesture marks. But we never did anything on the level of Mr. Santos here! These paintings are incredible! Who else paints like this man?!

There is no way, for me, to determine if this is a good painting or not. That is if we care whether quality is even an issue. There is no recognizable reference where we can say the artist accomplished his goal. This work seems to be a semi abstract idea fighting to be something and failing to materialize. As a study in design; shapes, balance harmony, I would say the artist succeeds. But what is it that I, as a viewer come away with spiritually? Emotionally? It is just a painting exercise.

What you said about how the work we are doing reflects where we are in time and the experiences we are having is interesting. There were certain periods in my life that had a certain overarching aura to them. Some of the periods are more inspirational than others because they were more emotionally impactful times. Sometimes negative or positive experiences, both can help inspire beautiful artworks. Sometimes though, I am not able to complete the paintings that come from periods in my life that have already passed. So though I may complete them at later times they sometimes loose there original meaning unless I can find that place again.
