(City office, practical, outdoors, using your body, entrepreneur, big international company?) -try making a list of careers you've always wanted and try them out one by one -career is like dating, very few of us end up marrying the first person that you kiss or the first person you ever dated. it should be based on knowledge and experience instead of assumptions and hearsay, expectations. -Try the job when it’s the WORST time (e.g. farming, in January, or accounting at the end of year, etc)
I cried watching this. I am in this situation .. I figured out my dream job doesn‘t make me happy and doesn’t fulfill me and now I feel so lost and depressed and I clearly have no Idea where I‘m going.
Sorry to hear that. I've struggled with .mental illness my entire life and it obscures who I am and what I want. Unfortunately your situational depression can get in the way and you might want to talk to a solid therapist who also does career advising
Your dream job shouldn't make you happy as a first priority. "Happiness" is probably the worst variable to consider in a job decision. Your dream job should fill you with purpose and meaning. Because you are going to have bad days in your life. Really really bad days. Because life is miserable and unforgiving and excruciatingly hard. And for such days, no amount of "happiness" that any job would give you will make the condition of life that you find yourselves in any better. If your job gives you purpose and meaning, that can get you through the day even if you are not happy. Even if you have the worst day of your life. You need purpose to keep on fighting the harsh reality of the human condition. Happiness is not going to help you in times of misery. Purpose and meaning is. It's what gets you out of your bed each day. This is something to look for. Find your purpose and start taking on responsibility. That's how you get through hard times.
Summary : 1.Try different jobs in different industries because some jobs require the same transferable skills 2. Think about work Environment you want to work in 3. Happy with the job is important

This was the talk I never knew I needed, constantly my mom would be on my case about getting a masters having a specific profession but I never felt like that was who I was, she wanted me to aim high or reach my potential, while I wanted different experiences in everything and we still bump head because of it, she calls it lazy, while I didn't have a name for it and now I do, its called being a wide achiever. Same situasion, and according mbti I am enfp. Idk why, but now I am attracted to film industry( but I want to study music, while now I studying design, ahg..) I am so confused! Feel very stucked and lost. Plus I love biology, psichology so these is my passions too.. agh... and if I was not failed on math exam it would could be my potential careers. I know it's very hard to find one perfect place in world where you can fit, but I understand you. The pressure from society and parents also horrible big. You know, when you have wide interests and your parents like" you can never find your passion, just stick to one! I worring about you, what wrong with what are you studying now? " But when you think about passions.. It's ok to have wide interests and achieve all them perfectly. You should consider that most people settle for jobs they don't like because of financial reasons. I wish you could have addressed that. Great talk though.
Its true that is a issue, but that won't stop me from learning a new skill, a day has 24 hours. So 8 hours for working, 8 hours for sleeping, 1 hour for resting, 30 min for grocery, 30 min cooking, 15 min eating, 15 min shower/toilet, 30 min family time. In total that's 19 hours, so 24 hour day - 19 hours = roughly 5 hours free time to do whatever you want. Of course it differs per person, but 5 hours per day is a lot of free time to learn a new skill. Instead of wasting on watching a long tv show serie etc. Its nothing wrong with that, i am just saying time is valuable.
We live in an age where you can learn practically any skill you could ever desire simply by picking up your phone and typing in questions on a search engine. I know not everyone is given the same opportunities growing up. I know there are those who struggle more than others, but at the end of the day, any blockers in your way are just excuses. It might take longer, or more work for one person to get to where another got to with much less, but that's just how the cards are dealt... Nobody but some divine deity can change the randomness we're born into, but we all have a say in our own lives once we're living it.

I’ve had 5 jobs in the 7 years since graduation. Each of these jobs has allowed me to discover what I’m capable of and what I like doing best. I realised I liked working with numbers, so I’m doing a few accountancy courses with the view to being an accountant.
I’m 23 about to be 24 next month. This sounds fun but hard since I didn’t attend college. I feel like that gave this lady an advantage as well. Higher education is definitely a good thing to have when you want to explore all those different careers
i entirely disagree. on the list of 25 jobs she had, archaeology was really the only one you need a degree for and maybe publishing. all the others require training that you would receive when you start that career like the law enforcement jobs she had on there, or it would be portfolio, experience, and skill based like travel writing, creative marketing, and photography. and you’re not starting a full blown career in any of those things you’re just trying them out and seeing what it could be like. if you need to go back to school when you decide what you like then you can do that.
Think out of the box. If you don't have Higher education- Go for the Gold- DO all the Incredible jobs YOU WANT YO DO. .. then see where the roads leads you to..

Turning 42 next week and still struggle to find my passion and purpose. Came very close to dying in a major motorcycle accident last year and it has triggered depression which only makes not finding my purpose even more daunting. I feel both grateful to be alive and guilty for not doing something I love and was meant to do ....I would like to be a motivational mentor, coach or whatever the term is but my mental road block is strong and I often feel defeated. I wish everyone the very best in their journey and pray that I am on the path I was meant to be on
I'm wishing you the very best in your recovery. As a thought that might help........A commonality I've found in my own journey, and those that I listen to that seem to have a lot to offer......is that they've ALL had obstacles to overcome and have been through periods of suffering. Let this recovery time strengthen your mindset. Pay attention to what it's teaching you. It'll become a part of your toolbox later on. Reach out to a good career coach or organization. With the current job market now is a great time to explore.

My passion is workout and fitness. I stand here today going back to college because I’ve come to the conclusion my passion is best left as something I do for fun not for the exploitation of business people looking to profit off my passion . I want a career where I am values I fortunately fitness is easy to get into and there is no real educational process to regulate it and elevate it to something more serious than a recreational outlet

Having the same problem, just "wasted" a lot more time ... going through different jobs always thinking this is it ... that's the one. But after a couple of months or years it has always turned out it is not. And I went to pursue another one and another and yet another ... now at age 40 I finally realised there is no THE JOB for me ... I have to switch between them or forever change them ... the only question that remains is how to be really good at something and charge for it since on the all fronts you have competition of highly skilled people with years and years of experience which can be achieved only if you really dive deep in to one field and specialise in it ... I could never be good at it as others that do it daily, every single day, all day ... for years and years.
Thanks for the experiential insight. I agree that being focused on a skill that makes you stand out is vital in order to make the biggest difference while also increasing the risk of getting a job. If you focus on jobs that have similar skill-requirements, you could still improve in a similar sets of skills while doing different jobs. And I do believe we are all different. Some are better at focusing on one thing, others are multi-talented. We need both.

How did you GET all those different jobs, you certainly could not have been qualified for many of them, as in, I'm sure you didn't hold degrees in agriculture or archeology etc etc.... I most definitely cannot just quit my job and go off experimenting and traveling and still hope to pay my bills.
Maybe its not for you then. If you are really a seeker. Someone who wants to solve their problem or find the answers to stuff, you go find a way to do it.
In an ideal world I can't agree more. Unfortunately, many of us do not have the ability to date careers, especially the ones from a socio-economic disadvantaged background. And many of us also don't get the opportunities necessary to find their passions. But it was a great presentation. Thank you.
I couldn't agree more that there are huge inequalities in access to careers advice and opportunity - I firmly believe it needs to be open to all, no matter of your background, and am now working on building an app to do exactly this.

I think I am in this situation. I entered the aircraft maintenance industry 3 years ago when I was 24. I thought I was passionate about aircraft. However, as all you know that the aviation industry has suffered a huge economic loss this year. I loss my income as well. I realise that I am not truly happy now, but it is quite hard to choose whether to stay in Hong Kong or emigrate to Manchester.

Great advice indeed. Practice and experience is the true knowledge but it may come at the highest possible price. A VERY IMPORTANT moment not to miss when you want to try 10 different jobs: 1. you may try to work for several weeks or months (as long as needed) before you know it's not yours and quit or wait and see the company fire you before you even made up your mind if this job is yours or not. 2. Employers may see it as a disadvantage in your CV seeing that you've jumped from one job to another and stayed with each company just a short period of time and are likely to get reluctant to employ you assuming you will leave their job just like you left the previous ones or you may not be good enough and they will fire you. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE SEARCHING FOR THEIR DREAM JOB

There’s some good stuff in this talk, but it makes me realize more than ever that TED is mostly about high-privilege people targeting a high-privilege audience.
Much of my time is now spent trying to make this as accessible to everyone as I possibly can. I strongly believe that career happiness should be for everyone, not just the privileged few.

I agree - I'm not for making excuses but it takes a certain financial stability to be able to go on a sabbatical for one year and just do whatever you want to do. Of course happiness is what everyone should strife for but if you've got mortgages, children or never had any real access to good education, it'll be hard to follow this advise. Which isn't to say it's bad advise, it's actually really good, just not available to everyone.
Firstly . i congratulate U on giving this Ted talk . its nerve racking to present to an audience . This is inspiration to me . Learn by doing . I was a quiet individual. Not good with talking people , i was in my 20s . i was shy. I pushed myself and step out my comfort zone. Now as i am older . i still get tongue tied. 🤣🤣 My passion is helping others , learning , being autonomous, compassionate, full of love and slow to anger . humbleness and humility. Empower young people to be great leaders.

It is always a challenge to know yourself. The way you propose to show and develop our skills is as simple as enriching. I wish I would have asked myself these questions when I was fresh out of high school. I received free college and didn’t do much exploring beforehand. I ended up changing my major multiple times and came out with a communications degree that I have no idea what to do with. Currently moving up in retail and have opportunity to become an assistant manager, but that’s not what I really want. Even after working there for 10 years. I’m passing it up just so that I can really find something that I enjoy. But I do have to say, this is one of the most difficult decisions of my life. Especially since I have a wife and daughter. I love the analogy of careers being like relationships. I really don’t think that this career is the one that makes me happy.
I chose a career and I don’t like it anymore. This just inspired me. I’m still in high school and I’m studying machine technology and I’m not passionate about it as much anymore. Some days I like it & other days I just hate it. Idk I’m confused and can’t seam to find my passion. Maybe it’s this. Idek what I want
It really does come down to what you like and what energizes you. But in order to do that you need to try different things. You have to put yourself out there and get your feet wet. That is the only way you will know what you like and don’t like. Even if you have no idea, just moving towards this idea can be a great feeling because you are finally moving in a direction that is beneficial for you. It’s not easy but the easiest things are never the most rewarding.

Great to hear that, I been going through the same situation that I studied Computer Science hoping it is a great career choice for me but it turned out to be the worst because I don't like to code but love to create things as well as don't like to just sit in one place like to explore but when I asked suggestion from my friends and family they said to stick to what you studied but I don't like coding and I hate to research and currently doing job-related to coding due to which I am always in depression. I feel as if nothing (I have good coding skills but I don't like coding) is there in what I am good at what I like to do. I am lost what to do where to go.
24 here and did the same thing. Degree in computer science, but now im not a fan of coding and im lost to what i do. We'll figure it out eventually though!
That's great on paper. I'd love a world like that. My career is already too diverse for recruitment. They don't care that I'm adaptable, they just want me to have that one specific experience so that they don't have to train me. Always the same. They say they're looking for personality and enthusiasm but at the end, that specific experience always wins over the great personality and adaptability /interesting /diverse resume. Also, some people spend a year just looking for a job. Plus, most jobs need several years of studies or training and you're not paid for that.
When was in the secundary grade I thought I would be an industrial food enginer; and also I played trumpet in the marching band, so I thoguht I would be, maybe, a musician too. When I was at high school I got struggle trying to do every like I had at that time, music, and many different sport disciplenes. In my Bachelors studies I choosed Horticulture and after that I tried to make a MS in Agronomic Parasitology... currently I work as a warehouse man in an automotive company...

Hi, I understand this feeling so well, it is normal, this is being human, you should watch a video on how to find your passion (the short one with drawings and a guy talking, it's good) and you should do personality tests and write down the answers that you feel are right, and research some "selfawareness questions" and answer them to get to know yourself. You can create a self awarness/getting to know myself notebook !
The problem with trying a bunch of different jobs is, I can only work at places that agree to hire me. And they hardly ever do. It's usually just instant rejection based on not having done it before, which prevents me from being able to try it for the first time.

My first job was with the Navy. Had to marry that one for six years minimum. Had no clue what I was getting into. It was fun! Still, they should ban recruiters from visiting high schools...
Maybe it's different based on where you live,but I wonder how did she get accepted to do all those jobs? There's no way she tweeted everytime? Did she just volunteer? If so,what's the pitch and how did she manage to sustain herself meanwhile? Because almost every job requires work experience and/or a degree or a connection to get you in.. Overall it was probably the most interesting talk I've seen so far,I just wish we could've got a bit more clarification/detail on her journey in that year.
i think there are some that are completely impossible for her to try without the necessary education and background. like international security, news reporter, tour guide, tech startup? maybe she volunteered to be an assistant for an archeolog or forest wood teacher, bcs there's no way they'd accept someone who'll work for only 2 weeks, or like know nothing abt archeology. maybe sending requests here and there to observe them doing their work? i feel like it'll be very valuable as well. i agree with you, i wanna know how she tried all those careers. i think she either had financial support from her family or had savings from her previous job
