The single most common question I am asked as an illustrator is, "how do I find my style?" It's definitely not something that comes easy, but I lend 12 ways to help you get there, if you're able!
Finding our own unique, creative voice in any field or discipline does not come without an incredible amount of patience, work, and dedication. But, if you have a unique voice to share and enjoy, then the work put in will surely pay off! It did for me, and I hope the 12 points I make in the video and in the classroom will help you, too! Cheers!
12 Ways to Help Find Your Creative Voice
1. STOP IMITATING OTHER ARTISTS
2. STEP OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE

4. TAKE CHANCES
5. FINSIH WHAT YOU STARTED
6. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE
7. KEEP IT SIMPLE
8. CONSISTENT & COHESIVE
9. TWIST YOUR PERSPECTIVE & STRETCH YOUR IMAGINATION
10. SEE WITH TWO SETS OF EYES

It's impossible to count the number of times in my career I've been asked, "How do I find my style?" It's a tough question, as there's no easy road to developing a style. But, with these 12 points, I hope you'll find something useful to help develop your own unique, creative voice or enhance the skills you already have. Thank you for watching and cheers! ~ Mark

M.D. Campbell Do you think we can have only one art style in our carrier? I think most of the artists have stages in there live. Based in colour like Picasso , or from realism to another realism like lucian Fried, or from realism to abstract, depend on several factors, one of these factors is the way they need to talk to people there feelings and thoughts

I roll my eyes every time I here “find my style” or “it’s just my style”. Style is something that emerges out of tons of work. It finds you. People looking for “their style” are trying to skip ahead many steps without the work. It’s not going to happen.

Thank you for having this 'talk' with me. I'm retired and finally taking the time to pursue my artistic interests-you'll notice I'm not saying my artistic talent because it's still too soon to determine if I have any! I have, of course, been copying the styles of the various RU-vidrs I like and am learning the mediums I prefer, but have been terribly frustrated by my hand tremors. They made it impossible for me to paint those long slim lines for flower stems, or to do thin ink outlines to highlight my paintings and forget doing any fine detailed work. So my ah- ha moment from this video was that I have to stop fighting the tremors and look for some way to embrace them as part of my style. It hadn't even occurred to me to do that. Not sure how to do that but there will be and answer. Thanks for giving me a new perspective .

Have you taken a look at the work of Peter Sheeler? I had what the Dr. said was essential tremors. When I tried his style, it worked. For some reason after I went on a KETO diet the tremors disappeared as of February 2019. So now I can do more exploring with other artists. He does beautiful work! Check him out. Just a suggestion.

My aunt painted for over 75 years. The last year, she tied a sponge around the handle of her brushes and it seemed to help her tremors. She did change her style a little, but still sol several paintings.

Hi, Mr. Campbell, I came across your video today (10-15-19) because I am now 70 years old, retired and trying to "find my style." So many of the things you mentioned apply to me, and I have been shoving them under the carpet for several years. I appreciate your bringing them to light; it made me turn around and face them head on. For me, it boils down to putting in the time and effort to developing my drawing skills first. It's always hard to jump into drawing exercises. Your video is extremely useful and helpful to me in my artistic journey. Thank you for your contribution to this sometimes difficult journey. P.S. I have book marked this page so I can refer to it often. Thanks so much! Michele

That means a lot, especially in helping me craft new content for my RU-vid channel. I wish you the best in your creative journey and I'm happy you're exploring it in your retirement! Congratulations! Best wishes ~ Mark

Excellent Mark! Your points were all right on. Oh the discussions I had with young artists when I was an art director. Finding a style was the pre-occupation of so many. What always bugged me is how early and unnecessary that obsession was over just learning and developing skills. Sadly, as a young artist, I fell into this camp for a time. The most talented and successful young artists I encountered, simply learned, explored and executed to best of their ability. Their style "emerged" over time as you alluded to. The biggest mistake I saw were artist trying to force a style or order it up as if from a menu, in effect pigeoning hole their work and stagnating before ever really learning anything. I need to do my own episode (or maybe a blog post) on this "style" obsession. The pursuit of it actually holds back so many artists. I loved your "Yesterday" song example for creative rethinking. I got another one for you, "The Sound of Silence" as covered by Disturbed. Take care friend!
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 6 лет назад
lol! I saw that Disturbed version a while ago and laughed! It was great, but that heaviness kind of scared me a little! lol! The thing with their song is that they kept the structure of the song exactly the same, just pacing it and ramping it up to an extreme level. The way FBCombo twisted "Yesterday" around was to make it a completely new and nearly unfamiliar song... much like Devo's "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" cover. The best one, I think, is the Kinks live version of their "You Really Got Me," which is a total redo of their 60's studio version. Ah, I could go on all day! But yes, you are 100% correct about the forcing a style point of view. I never went through that, fortunately, but I see young people do it all the time. I should make a video called, "Do You Like My New Style I Just Came Up With?" hehe!! If you ever need points for your own video, feel free to borrow from me or my blog. Thanks for checking this one out - oh, and I really liked the Matthew passage at the end of your recent video. Very nice! Cheers! :)
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 6 лет назад
Ok, I'll have to check out that "Yesterday" for sure. You're absolutely right about Disturbed's cover. Its intense but similar in structure and pacing. Given the sentiments in the lyrics, I thought it added a different urgency to the song. I should hasten to say, I'm NOT a Disturbed fan normally. LOL! "How do you like my new style?" YES! Exactly! 😂 Thanks on the Matthew passage. Short and to the point but oh the power and significance in those words.

I am actively not fucusing on discovering a style at the moment. I am still studying and I want to explore any and all ideas that come to me. Sometimes I paint portraits, other times it's landscapes or surrealism. Sometimes I paint with smooth flat washes, and other times I make bold, visible brushstrokes. I switch between realism and stylised. One day I will settle into a style, but before that happens I want to do a great deal more experimentation.
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 6 лет назад
Thank you for checking this out, Caitlin Brown! I a bit like that too, in that I can often switch styles from one day to the next, based on mood, environment, and other factors. But, generally, I'd say there's still a consistent "thing" from piece to piece that offers anyone looking at what I do the idea that it's mine. Even in my graphic design work. ;)

Thanks for another great video. One thing I think that helps is to become very critical of the artwork you find yourself drawn to; really figure out why you like the works of your favorite artists. If you can understand what works - and what doesn't - in things you really enjoy then you will naturally start to discover the way you want to create your own work that incorporates the best aspects of what inspires you. Style is forged as an amalgamation of experience, inspiration and personal taste.
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 6 лет назад
Hi Ian S and thank you for your kind words! I agree that having a discriminant eye for what appeals to us is important, just as much as what does _not_ appeal to us. I've learned to more closely analyze artwork that I do not like, because I have a desire to know _why_ I don't like it - what is it about the piece or style that puts me off. And usually, that inspection draws new conclusions and I see more information than before, and more times than not, I end up having more appreciation for the work than when I first noticed it. If that makes any sense. ;)
@Uradamus
@Uradamus 6 лет назад
Ya, that makes a lot of sense. No reason to limit yourself to learning from just your own mistakes, when plenty of others are making their own all the time. Also in a way it is a lot like how people tend to learn material on a deeper level by taking the time to explain it to someone else. That act of examining a subject closely and finding a way to articulating it intelligibly to others is a sure fire way to help ingrain new concepts. You need that same sort of attention to detail in order to properly deconstruct the feelings a work of art may elicit - both good and bad.

You always have so much good advice! There are a lot of things to take away in here for anyone, and I hope that plenty of people find something here that resonates with them on their journey. I personally never understood why, when I was in college, my professors always told me "You can't draw X like that-that's now how you do that in your style." Like, I do a lot of bendy woobly arms and whatnot, and one time I actually drew knees and elbows and a professor told me that I should change it to be how I'd been drawing them before so it would fit within my body of work. Which I suppose I understand a little, but.... I dunno. There's too much good in experimenting with new ideas and techniques that there shouldn't be a problem with adding or subtracting features here and there. Especially in a learning environment!

Thank you! This is some of the best advice I've heard. For me, it has been learning to embrace my "quirky" style. One thing I know for sure is, I am not now or will ever be a painter of realism. I really enjoy whimsical, sketchy illustrations with watercolor, pen and ink. I have the sketches for a children's book if I will just get the nerve to finish it. An artist who inspired me many years ago was Flavia Weeden. Her art touched the heart and definitely made an impression on me.

Thank you for making this video, it was very interesting. I think that when most artist ask that question (myself included), they always hope there's a quick solution or a magical recipe to find your own style but already know that it's not something that's possible. So it's a bit like buying a lottery card knowing full well that you're probably not going to win anything. Finding your own style is not easy, it's not quick, and can get pretty frustrating. I was very interested by the 'planning' point, because that's something I never do because of lack of time. I know very well that making swatches, color charts and even sketch tries can save you a lot of grief when making a polished piece, but when you have just that hour of free time every other day, doing a project starts to look like a 3-month-in-advance, all-time-consuming painting. So my question would be, if one has not a lot of time, some suggestions on how to 'quickly' plan your project; which tools are going to be the most helpful (Color mixing chart? Palettes tryout? Sketch tryout?) and how can you condense them as much as you can so that you do not have to sacrifice all your free time just for planning. A 'Hell Week' Planning video, basically. :P
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 6 лет назад
Hi Karijn's Watercolors! Thank you for checking this out and for the kind thoughts. It is very frustrating, and for years I struggled with "should I use this style, or should I use this other style?" In fact, I still struggle with it in certain areas of my work. Sometimes, having one style can seem limiting, while having many styles can be overwhelming. As for the "planning" aspect, here's how I often work. When I'm starting a new project or even a new video, I begin in the early morning, usually taking an hour to start my notes. It always starts with the title. From there, I log down everything I'm going to need or address, in an outline form. It doesn't take long, as it's just basic info. The next day, I spend another hour refining those notes, until the scope becomes clear. I do this for up to a week, until I have a secured amount of time to fully invest in the project, like on the weekend. In other words, I spend days developing my notes, drafting ideas, and putting a plan in place before I ever start the project. It's just how I am. It's nothing pretty or fancy, just notes. Then I collect what I need and have it nearby, so when I _do_ sit down to work, everything is within reach (even my coffee! seriously!). Not sure if that helps, but perhaps a video on the subject might be in order. Cheers! :)
@KarijnsWatercolors
@KarijnsWatercolors 6 лет назад
Haha, I can see that you have all your logistics down pat, it's something I never manage to do, no matter how much I try. Sometimes I get this 'finished piece' in mind, just as a flash and then, when I do try to make it happen, I never seem to get anything right, fail the proportions, suddenly forget how a plant looks like and so on. Maybe a concept panel would do me a lot of good. :D

Thank you for this video Mark, I loved all the points you made. I think I personally have found that copying other people made it difficult for me to find my own style because I just never knew what I wanted that style to be. I was too busy being confused between so many other people's styles. I think it's only really been in the last few months of drawing consistently every single day that I have really started to feel comfortable with finding my own direction even though I realised quite a few years ago that the thing which came most naturally to me was cute, children's book type images. Drawing every day is certainly helping with finishing what I start. If you want to draw and post something every day then even if it hasn't worked out quite right you need to just see it through to the end, lol!

I've only recently found my style, or one of them, lol, and it still seems ephemeral like smoke - as if it may blow away at any time and turn out to not be real. It was nice to watch this, hoping to see something new, and have you actually affirm that what I've been doing is right. I fell into it quite accidentally (Or was shoved by a friend, who saw me stagnating with beginner courses), and it's been one, long uncomfortable, but exhilarating and happy ride. Also, thanks for listing the points, so that I can print them out, and look at them to remind myself I'm heading the right way!

Gina-Marie Hammer Your comment truly struck a chord with me & I actually had an ‘aha’ moment when you said; ‘...stagnating with beginner courses’ Doh! That’s what I seem to be doing lately - in case I might’ve ‘missed’ something! It’s good to revise the basics - I was telling myself but at the same time, not acknowledging the disappointment I was feeling towards my lack of progress. Turns out I DO have a style - I just never labelled it as ‘a style’. PS A printout of these points is a great tip 👍

Thank you so much for watching and your lovely compliment, Mari Akutsu! I definitely agree about the fine line. For people who develop their style and can recognize that it's unique, whether in singing, writing, or art, and are ready and able to produce at that level, it's definitely in that comfort zone. But, I will say, even seasoned artists are impatient and critical of their own work, which I think spurs them on to constantly evolve, however slightly. Thank you again, and cheers! :)

I just came into a slew of nibs, a nib holder, and ink and started dipping and dripping and loving it. What a great feeling of the pull of the nib on the paper and the flow of ink. And I love the stains on my fingers. Thanks for your videos. I look forward to them. Happiness. --nina.

Thank you, nina, for checking this out and your thoughts. I'm happy knowing my work is of some worth for you. I'm a bit envious of the slew of nibs you've come into, as it's something that I love about drawing. Something very raw and tangible about dip pens that I don't get with other mediums. Enjoy them! :)

Oh no, i started typing and was almost done when i accidentally hit the wrong button. But well, i guess the second time is much less rambly. So, Mark, thank you so so much! You cannot imagine how much this video is appreciated by just me - not to mention all the other people who may be as happy as I am right now. To be honest - i binch watch a good amount of youtubers and was so sick of hearing always the same answers to this questions, which they only took from again other youtubers. This opinions range between "there is no such thing as one style" and the implication of e.g. "naturalism is the only style to aim for". I could'nt bear it anymore. But you see - your art-style-video was the one I really hoped for since day one but even more since you talked in one of your videos about this student of yours who had the same problem. Man - i was so disappointed to sit on the other end of the world not knowing what your answer was. Well - i guess this disappointment is now resolved. Thank you so so much again - i really looked forward to this and you didn't disappoint me. Please keep spreading your unique point of view - i believe there should be more people heeding your advice. Greetings from Germany!

Thanks Mark for continuous great video. The issue of today is important for all artist. When you read a piece of paper deattached from a book, you can tell the writer. If you saw a part of art work you can tell who is the painter, or a part of a video and you can say it is from Mark chanelle. This is when you achieve the excellence in creativity. You have to use the 12 steps in the video, it will help so much, but you will find your style when you find what you need to share with the people about your thoughts. Mark, Thanks again for the video, advice, awsome art illustratuon and lovely Music.

This video seems to be a little fishy but how can that be when I’m sure it smells great?? This has so much great info that so many of us wish we had in school in the olden days of art classes and trying to find ourselves. Oh well my life and career choices went in different directions and I dont regret any of it. Art in retirement, it is so good for our minds, do I finish everything...no. letting myself stop and toss has been great for me. But that is just me and where I am in my life. Keep challenging those students but with the key of letting them know WHY, please.

As an artist I admire so much, I thank you for your support and encouragement. As I approach retirement age, as well, I wonder how my approach to art will change? I can't say. Great video Mark! 😁 The mermaid came out beautifully. I wonder, does she take a bath under the ocean or come on land to soak... Lol 😉 As for style, I used to worry about it a long time ago, but stopped. Why add the extra stress. It's like learning to talk. As babies we mimic what the big kids say until we start finding our own voice. As we use that voice & learn, we develop bigger words and a more detailed way of communicating. I think art style is the same. When we start arting we mimic the big kids. 😉 As our creativity grows & we experiment and learn we start developing our own art communication (style). It happens all on its own as we grow & one day it just there. Other people start recognizing our communication style as unique. Personally, another reason I stopped focusing on style is I didn't want to be pigeon hold in one area. I started with fantasy, went to realistic, and now I'm flirting with surrealism & going back to fantasy. 😃 I tend to always go outside my comfort zone. So, can staying outside your comfort zone become your comfort zone? 🤔 lol... Oh as for the design cp... OMG I have a set of 12! They were the very first cp I bought knowing nothing and wanting to create art in bed from the pain back in 2001-02. I didn't know they had a bigger set. In fact, I just found them again when I was redoing my studio. I fell in love with cp after using these. They were so buttery. I didn't know cp could be like that. I had only ever used school colored pencils as a kid. I went looking for new pencils because I wanted more colors and some were getting short only to not find them again. 😭 That's when I found the prismacolor. I need to pull them out again & show them some love. 😉

I love this video!, i personally really just enjoyed putting pencil/paint to paper and creating something. Sometimes I go on nature walks here and see certain features on people/ patterns on trees or clouds that really resonate with me. somehow i feel that maybe be my artistic personality trying to emerge ( who knows ). In college I had a conversation with a guess abstract artist 50+ years of experience and he explained how his is still re discovering his art style. I understand its important to professional artist to have a style i tend to fall on the side of things will happen organically as you keep practicing/ learning likes and dislikes so on. would love to comment on all your points but more than likely this will end up being a whole book. In summary these are amazing guideline for whomever is struggling with the subject . Thank you for sharing this video :)

Thank you for sharing your kind thoughts, Angel Drawing Studio! Your words mean a lot and I can relate very well to what you're saying, especially about things happening organically. Hello Sarah and thank you so much for watching and your generous, lovely comments. I really appreciate that! Congrats on the new sketchbook. As for the brushes I was using, I put it in the description, above, but they are a Princeton #5 Angle Spotter brush, a Loew Cornell #0 Comfort brush, and an Isabey #5 6223 brush. I generally just reach for whichever one looks good at the moment, so there's no science to which brushes I use, though I will admit, I do love the angle spotter when doing videos because it allows me to paint and see what I'm doing at the same time! Thank you for this. I really wish I had this advise my freshman year of high school (1980/81). I didn't so I did not take art or do art after that until about a year ago. I am just getting back into it and I am doing art for ME. I am not looking to sell or anything like that. I am doing my art for me....and to (very rarely) show others. I have found that I really was NOT that bad....I was just in the "company" of a group that was a TOTALLY different set of artists so on THAT note....I was not that good but looking back....I was good for ME but just never got the encouragement I needed in a time I needed it most (I grew up with a birth first name where I was teased from junior high and on....I don't even go by that name to this day). And again.....I am yapping away much longer then I intended. THANK YOU AGAIN for sharing this! I too am a student of life. Cheers and have a great rest of the week. 😊

Thank you for taking your time with this one, and for such wonderful feedback. Now, of course, I'm curious what that birth name is. Anyhow, yap on, because I enjoy your thoughts! Cheers and thank you! :)

M.D. Campbell my name rhymes with Kay.....it's Gaye....I'm a twin. Two older brothers insisted our names rhyme when we were born. When I was given the name it meant "happy"....and of course we all know what it means now. From the late 70's on into high school it was one tease after another. To this day.....same thing. Amazing how adults can be just as mean as kids. Anyway, I just had very little encouragement and withdrew from a lot. I also suffered from misophonia but I only found out about that about 5 years ago (had it since I was about 5 but never knew others had it. I thought I was the only one). 30+ years later I am trying to discover my lost art within me. Anyway.....enough rambling.
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 6 лет назад
Becca, thank you so much for sharing that! I have a friend whose name is Gaye, as it was her grandmother's name. And yes, she also went through the same teasing you describe. She was crafty with her replies, and always joked about her name, even to the point where nobody said anything. In high school, I had two teachers that were married - Mr. and Mrs. Gay. They were not only amazing teachers, but they were wonderful people. But, that didn't stop the jokes and snickering. But, as we get older, many of us learn to stop the juvenile hijinks of youth and adopt a respectful perspective to life. While not as bad as the teasing you received, I'm sure, my entire life has been "Campbell's soup!" to which I not only learned to accept and joke about, too, but I even adopted the Campbell's color scheme for my logo. I'm not related, but I have to recognize that it's a brand people know. So, why not work with what I was born with! lol! As for the misophonia... wow. I am sensitive to sounds, and certain one's like motorcycles and ATVs make me bananas. I hope you are able to cope with it and manage your surroundings. And lastly, I hope you are able to connect with your lost art... it's not lost - it's just not been rediscovered! Best wishes and again, thank you for sharing!

I am not actively seeking out a style at this point in time, I know what I'm drawn to and what I love but I feel like looking to emulate or find a style would suck all the joy out of art. I am totally about photo realism. I do follow artists I feel are painting what I love. How can I make the art unique to me, when the reference pictures are similar for a fine artist vs a beginner like myself? I hear I do pretty good, but have alot to learn, to achieve my own identity. Thanks for your advice.
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 6 лет назад
Hi Ursula Nonya! I started with realism at a young age, but my hand moved more to an impulsive beat. I still do some realism, now and again, but I don't enjoy it. Why? Because realism, like with the old masters, relies on very strict rules. From proportion to perspective, color to composition. If the values and lighting are off, even a little bit, then the whole painting can be thrown off. However, artists like Cezanne, Rembrandt, and Picasso, who were the brat generation of realists, learned to paint in their own style, whether by dismissing or breaking the strict rules, exaggerating proportions or even just making bolder lines. Look at Van Gogh's work. Do you wish to paint like Titian or Raphael? I don't know. It's up to you how you wish to speak in the language of art. You just need to be clear when you do. :)

I feel a little silly asking this question but I honestly could use direction in getting to know wgi the audience is. How do you go about discovering your audience? How do you know you've found them? And finally, how do you discover what it is they want?
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 6 лет назад
Don't feel silly at all, A.R.Tygr! I'm happy you thought to ask, as it's a great question! For any artist, an audience is simply people that enjoy your work and support your endeavors and success. You get them by simply putting yourself out there. The key, however, is in keeping them and growing the numbers. That means, you have to keep putting yourself out there, in different venues. Online is, perhaps, the best venue these days. Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Tumblr, Flickr, and RU-vid are the most popular. But, it's a give and take - you have to BE the audience to others to have them BECOME your audience. So, you visit other artists in the same field and check out their work. Offer feedback or comments on it. And after you establish yourself, then, at some point, politely ask for them to check out your work too. It's an exchange of trust and support, each promoting the other's success. Once you build a following or audience, they'll respond to what they like and they be silent about what they don't like. But, it all starts when you put yourself out there. I hope this helped! Cheers! :)

the 6. Know your audience, sounds the most challenging for me. I really want good communication, and i have had a clash with a teacher before, but i don't think he intends this message. Just, every conversation was really frustrating and he wasn't clear in his own explenations either. I wasn't alone, the whole class kinda disliked his way of teaching. He would say one thing and then say the opposite in the same discussion later. And if you questiondd him he just would say you were bad. Heck we even asked for a discussion to adress our problems with the current handling, and he brushed them all asside so that our class of 30 was silenced.... didn't help he was the head leader of the animation department, tough we think he got that roll bc he can archive and order stuff... not for his creative vision wich clashed a lot. Heck, i had to make a report about a fesrival about my vision on the atmosphere and i was absolutely positive and inspired by the event. Handed in the report : He said i was wrong. Didn't explain it. he just said i was wrong. I asked him how my experience of an event could be wrong. He said i was probably jusg bad..... edit : srry im rambling, but its gonna be hard to try and press to find something to learn from if i clash with teachers again. And its not that im soft. heck i learned the most from a drawing teacher who would just flat out when somethinf was bad or good. But he didnt linger too much. He went to talk with students. i respected him while he obviously saw i had a troubling start in his lessonz

The way you present the teacher that hated your airbrushing, he sounds like he was probably a bad teacher. He may have had things to teach you, but was poor at getting it across. Being dismissive of how an artist works, creates antagonism. When I was in school, I was dismissive of anime style art. it wasn't until I saw Masamune SHirow and Akira that I started to think a little differently. I also disliked that artists worked exclusively in digital and never sketched on paper, but that was their process. I think its limiting, but I can't necessarily prove that. Their mind may never work properly drawing on paper .
