a tip for if you don't have a niddy noddy. I don't have one because I'm working with a really small budget for spinning. you can do just about the same thing with no tools except your body. the way I do it is that I take the end of the yarn in my non dominant hand, stick that arm straight out with the elbow locked and then I wind the yarn between that hand and the back of my neck. you can also do the same thing for measuring yardage that you do with a niddy noddy. mine comes out at a little under a yard and a half but everyone's will be different since we all have different bodies

May I suggest that before removing the yarn/singles from the noddy-noddy that one places several loose ties on the skein? I do one for each of the four "lengths" of the niddy-noddy. This helps prevent tangling in the wash. Ties should be loose, because if a spinner wants to dye her yarn and the ties are too tight, the dye won't penetrate under the ties. (But a lot of tight ties could make an interesting self-striping yarn...)

I just came across this video, again, and I still think it’s a great video! I just set the twist on a two ply yarn, but I used a slightly different method. I started with hot water and switched to cold water, and I put half a cup of white vinegar in each bath to help the color stay fresh. Then I put it in my salad spinner to get most of the water out.

Thank you for saying there's no bad yarn... i just started drop spinning and it's so horrible 😆 fat skinny fat skinny ugh I can't compensate the stop go rhythm

Don't feel bad. Mine looks pretty rough too, but I am learning. Haven't plied anything I have spung yet and I am waiting until I feel confident enough to ply it and make it look beautiful. So far it looks like a roving then goes lace weight thin (some spots have broken and have knots 😂) still keep going. I am always better than I was yesterday. 😁

That's how we ALL started out! Don't despair. Just keep practicing. You might also want to try wheel spinning.

Do you ever "thwack" your yarn? I've heard doing that helps set the twist as well.
@PotionYarns
@PotionYarns 3 года назад
I have used the thwacking technique before; but I don't usually use it these days. I think it's valid but but I just don't usually find it necessary.
@helenel4126
@helenel4126 3 года назад
Twacking is only done if you have overspun your yarn. You can tell if a yarn is overspun if the loop of the yarn twists to the right or the left. If you have a balanced yarn - the twist of your singles equals the twist of your plying - your resulting plied yarn will hang mostly straight. The yarn's twist is set by (1) time that you let your singles rest (I let mine rest a day) and (2) that dunk into tepid/cool water.

@@helenel4126 Thanks for that information...I thought I should let it rest, but I informed that I can take it off right away. I don't think it would really matter, because I tend to over twist all the time.

@@helenel4126 hi I know this is a year ago but can I ask what is the best way to set an over twisted Sari Silk roving spun with lots of lumps and bumps as the person wanted. I am weary to wet set it and it is a single. Thank you any help if you see this message

Thanks for the video. I love your energy and passion! Do you use this technique for art yarn that has a variety of fibers in it? I’ve had trouble steaming it.
@PotionYarns
@PotionYarns 2 года назад
Yes so far I've used it for all my yarns, even when mixing fibers. I'm not the most experienced spinner, so someone may have a better suggestion but so far it's worked for me!

I know this video is a little old now, but what kind of wool wash/detergent do you recommend for finishing handspun yarn? Any particular brand/kind? Is there a kind to stay away from?
@PotionYarns
@PotionYarns 2 года назад
Great questions! I personally prefer to use wool wash that is gentle and specifically for protecting the properties of wool. My favorites are Eucalan and Unicorn Wash, but Soak is another one that's really good. If you don't have that, I would use a very gentle, eco-friendly laundry detergent for delicates: I like Zum laundry soap best but anything that's gentle will work. Just remember to rinse well if using a laundry soap instead of a wool wash!

How are your spun ends not all poofy? I can't figure out how to make mine normal.
@PotionYarns
@PotionYarns 3 года назад
It is tricky! I think that's a common issue with handspinners. I just typically hold onto the end of the fiber as I finish and allow it to overtwist a bit ago that it's got a little extra twist to lose (as it inevitably does). The other trick that helps a lot esp with non-superwash fiber is to lick your fingers and roll the ends between your fingers just a little to help it stuck together (that is done after spinning it).

So in your opinion would coven and arm candy look good together?
@PotionYarns
@PotionYarns 4 года назад
Andrea Burgher I think they would! There will be a lot of high contrast because the Coven is so dark and Arm Candy has a lot of white space and the speckles will spin into a softer, more pastel look with flashes of deeper color; so if you like a lot of contrast, I think it’ll look beautiful!
