How to Fire A Live Steam Ruby

This video explores the basic concepts and methods to operate a Live Steam Ruby from Accucraft. Many of the ideas are central to all live steam locomotives in this scale and can be applied to other engines.
Although I have customized my Ruby you will find that it still has the same concepts as a basic as-shipped Ruby from Accucraft.
Emphasis is placed on good preparation and we explore the materials needed for a successful run of a live steam locomotive.
Each item and method mentioned has a reason for it such as there is a reason that I put the steam oil in before the boiler water and I actually have 5 or more brands of steam oil. The reasons for or against any particular item or order of operations are beyond the scope of this introductory video. If you have specific questions please ask them in the comments section below. Perhaps, based on feedback, we may make future videos that will explore some of these topics in greater detail.
Again, these discussions are purposely left out of this video to keep it on topic with an introductory How-To guide. If you have years of experience and own a dozen locos I would not be surprised to hear that you have developed your own methods, but his video is intended for the newcomer.
As with all How-To videos on the Internet you are advised to take all precautions necessary and that we are not liable for any damages that may occur due to operation of any live steam locomotive. Always follow your locomotive's directions from its manufacturer in order to continue to receive support from them.

I just got my Ruby Kit today for Christmas, and I am doing my homework on how to manage these little machines. This video was very helpful, thanks a ton 👍

For me, I have the whistle on this loco, which is a simple means to let off all of the boiler pressure. For other locos the use of a pressure gauge is key, but in both cases opening the throttle valve is often a simple means to reduce boiler pressure while things cool. Adding water through a goodall valve will quickly cool the water in the boiler thus reducing pressure.

Very nicely done! I am thinking of doing one with my 1.5 inch scale locomotive. It is neat to see the difference between the G scale and the 1.5" scale locomotives.

Can Ruby run on normal G scale track?

you get a feel for how long/far you can go before you need to add more, generally when I add more fuel I give some squirts of water. As you get to know your engine you'll learn what it wants and when. It's like a good marriage. Also, since I have a whistle, if toot that a lot I know I'm using more water.

Great video! Where did you get your tender at?

I think I ordered mine from RLD Hobbies one time when he was having a sale. Robbie ordered it from Accucraft and it shipped directly from them to me. They are super hard to find these days. I have repainted this tender green with custom SPC lettering. The cab is now wood, too.

Is there much of a break in period for new locos?
@GardenRR
@GardenRR 2 года назад
A loco that one built from a kit will need some time on air to make sure the timing is set correctly, perhaps a few firings after that, once complete, should do the trick. A "new" loco that is RTR actually has some time on it from the factory and shouldn't need any more time to really get it set.

@@GardenRR that’s what I was thinking. I just got one and feel like that timing isn’t quite right. On a cold engine, if I move the reverser to the direction of travel, I can move the engine but feels like it’s binds in the running gear. I can only get the engine to run at warp speed. Anything slow it seems to lock up.

Could you possibly post a video sowing how you put he compressor in. Also what compressor is it?
@GardenRR
@GardenRR 10 лет назад
The compressor set is one from Accucraft. I can find the part number. I just slipped the top part of it under a dome on the loco. Simple install, nothing really to show. I can email you a photo sometime. I tried to reply to your other comments, but they weren't here when I clicked "reply."

I ordered them on ebay from a guy that makes them from aluminum. He was in NY, IIRC.

wow the link did work, seems to be a bit of work getting her up and running, so how long will it go till you have to add more, water, butane, oil?
@GardenRR
@GardenRR 8 лет назад
The steam oil isn't that frequent, but the water and gas are things to keep tabs on. Most of these engines are designed so that they run out of fuel before they run out of water and it all depends on the size of the boiler and gas tank, but 15~20 minutes is quite reasonable. I will typically fire up a loco to the point that it lifts the safety and runs a wee bit, then I'll shut down the fire and top off the fuel and water. If you're a good engineer you can stretch your runs longer and longer. If you just go full-throttle all of the time you're going to run out of steam at the bottom of some hill somewhere along the line, much like the real thing. The more you run your loco the more you get to know how it sounds (or smells) and what that means: more water, she's going to need more fuel, etc.

Now would you say that the Ruby is a good entry way into live steam in garden scale?

Hi.. it's a beautiful machine.. Do you add the radio control by your own?
@GardenRR

Yes I added it "by" my own. I'm upgrading it right now to an even better system; one that isn't designed for RC planes or cars.
