Hello again, this week we had a request from greatlakesfisher1, a subscriber of ours, to do a bullhead catfishing video. So we did just that. Thanks for the great video suggestion, greatlakesfisher1!
Ivo takes you shore fishing as he baits up with live worms to fish for bullhead catfish in the spring along a creek. He shares many tips and techniques on how to bait your hook, how to leave a scent trail, and more. All which help in landing catfish after catfish!
I hope you enjoy this bullhead catfishing video, and as always good fishin'!
PS: let us know how you fish for bullheads by posting a comment or video response. We'd love to hear it!

What I absolutely love about bullhead fishing is once they are located, you can pretty much catch the whole school. Those schools are usually plentiful so this is a fantastic way to get kids into fishing. Ive spent many days enjoying some light action gear bullhead fishing and had a blast. Looking forward to catching some to eat next time I go fishing! Great video by the way!

@ps3265 This rig was a simple "hook, line and sinker" rig. You can use snelled hooks or you can use a T-Turn (3-way swivel) to your hook (which would actaully be better as it will avoid line twist. Glad you enjoyed the video and good luck on the water.

Hi Marv - not sure what is going wrong, but once you see the bobber go down, you can pull back and set the hook - if you bobber goes down and stays down, pull right away

For bullheads, you can use light line such as 6 lb or 8 lb test line. Mono line is fine and Bass Pro makes a brand called Excel which is decent line at good value. Long shank hooks are best to allow for easier removal and size 4 hooks would be a good size (size 6 or size 2 will also work for you). If there is no current where you are fishing, a 3/4 oz sinker would be more than sufficient. Good luck on the water :)

We like to fillet it first and then use strips for bait. If you are going for really big Channel cats or flat-head, then you can use a whole fillet or even the whole sunfish, but for most every day fishing, strips will work great for you:)

Right now, one of the most popular fish to catch is the Perch. A live bait rig, using the T-Turns and live minnows will work great for you :)

When fishing for catfish, it is important that your bait be resting on the bottom. Catfish are bottom feeders and rely heavily on scent, when it comes to feeding. As such, suggest avoiding the use of a bobber, or., if y must use a bobber, then make sure that your bait is resting on the bottom and your bobber should then lie horizontal on the waters surface :)

@Venthoz At this time of year in our area, bullheads are harder to catch. Calamari is not a good bait for bullheads. We find that worms are the best bait - especially the red worms found in manure piles. Try also at night which will increase your chances. Look for stained water rather than crystal clear. Good luck!

Hi Jake, a 3/8 oz sinker is perfect and a size 4 or size 2 hook is good for bullhead catfish. You do not need special leader line, but suggest using mono (or fluorocarbon) :)

Try pinching the barb of the hook back. This will make it easier to remove the hook & should still hold the bait. Also, you can take a dry rag to hold the fish easier & a pair of pliers will come in handy as well. Thanks!

For Bullheads, we like to use small leaf worms found in compost piles, but regular worm swill work as will minnows :)
@thundermistlures

Hi Adam - the sinker is at the end of my line, just as you indicated. The split shot and regular hook set up will also work. The key is to ensure that your bait is on the bottom :)

This rod was a 6 foot graphite rod, but you can use a 5 or 6 foot rod, and medium action or light action are o.k. for bullheads - in fact, a light action rod is preferred :)

Both hooks were baited with worms. We have not caught many bullheads on artificials. We basically found that in our waters, worms work best. Good fishing!
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 12 лет назад
The hooks were smaller (size 4) and the sinker was light (3/4 oz). If you have current, you will need to go heavier on the sinker, but in most lakes and ponds, 3/4 oz sinker is plenty :)
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 13 лет назад
@MrDanoconnor The side barbs can pinch you if you are not careful - so the best way to handle them is to come form behind and go over the side barbs so you can easily remove the hook. Thanks for writing in and good lcuk on the water!

Carp will bite when they are on the spawn, but not while they are actually spawning/jumping. They typically do not chase lures, so next time, try using corn or dough balls and fish right on the bottom. Spring & Summer are best and early morning is also best for carp - good luck :)

@The7DCinema You could try circle hooks. These hooks are designed so that the fish will hook themselves. Recommend not to use J hooks as there is a greater chance of swallowing the hook. Thanks!
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 12 лет назад
They are closer to shore in the spring when the water is cold, but as summer approaches they will go to deeper water during the day & may come closer to shore to find food during the night.Thanks!
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 12 лет назад
@TheJagdog It's basically 2 - 6" leaders with J hooks spaced about 12" apart. The sinker is located about 4" below the last hook. Thanks!

@Allaroundstuff Try fishing at night in the dark as bluegills should stop feeding. Make sure the bait is on bottom & your light sinker is ok. Thanks!

Sounds like you found the right pattern and that you had a great day on the water. the worms from a compost pile may possibly be greenish in color - it depends on the pile they came from. Suggest continuing to use the green worms as they are working for you :)

@ hooks and a sinker is a perfect rig - in fact, if you have any T-Turns (3-way swivels) that would be even better :) we like to use a size 4 or size 2 long shank hook for bullheads. The long shank makes it much easier for hook removal. Catfish will bite in late February but not aggressively as they are not active - at least not in the cooler states not in Canada, Wit the cold weather, they are not very active, but will bite - March would be better though :)
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 13 лет назад
@tuanie1 IN this case, a regular bell sinker is all you need. 1/2 oz or 3/4 oz should be heavy enough, assuming there is little to no current. Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water.

@MustangJimmy816 Try this set-up. To your main line, tie a sinker. 12 inches from your sinker onto the main line, tie an 18 inch leader which contains a hook. 6 inches away from your hook onto your leader, tie on an 8 inch piece of line containing a float that will suspend your bait but not the sinker. Your bait will remain stationary. The crawfish should not be able to climb onto your line (use mono). You have tried floats, but hopefully this will help. Good luck!

Not sure if we will be able to make our way out to Lake Shelbyville, however, we will be adding more bass videos this summer and you will be able to use a lot of the same tactics :) PS> the Python Darter rigged with a 4 inch plastic worm or 3 - 4 inch twister tail, works great for Largemouth :)
