Toe warmers help a lot also

To me the most important thing about staying warm is starting out warm! On cold days I put my waders on at home and then drive to the river. I also rig my rod at home so I don't spend time at the car putting the rod together. On the way to the river I open my chemical hand warmers, they last for 8-10 hours, this way they are hot and ready to go. Lastly, when I'm swapping flies or dealing with my rig I get out of the water ... this helps my feet stay warm! I actually dress quite different than described in the video, but I not going to go into more detail.

I warm my waders up on the drive in too - put my fingerless gloves up on the defrost heater so everything is toasty!

I lik those black army wool fingerless gloves. Other gloves can freeze solid in freezing weather.

I agree the vest is a must have. I bought one this year and I won’t leave the house without it.

Great information FFD. I always avoid wearing cotton. It can kill you if it gets wet and it's cold out. Just thought i would throw that out there.

They call cotton 'death fabric' for a reason.

Hi Dan! We call it a "neck gator". I never used to get cold hands but age is catching up with me. Those pocket hand warmers can be life savers and day savers for a quick warm up.

So funny I couldn't remember that! I have special compartments for handwarmers on my new DRYFT waders - I'll be outfitting those with warmers for sure!

Amazon has a rechargeable hand warmer that I like to use in the winter. In between fishing spots or after you handle a fish you can bring your hand warmer out. It’s only like 20 bucks so it’s worth it to me. Fish on my man!

FFD, another SUPER video. Even though I layer my feet exactly as you do, I’m done and numb after a couple of hours in the Idaho winter waters, ice floating by. I haven’t seen that vest; pretty kewl. My secret, for those that don’t have such a vest, are to place hand warmers on the top of each forearm, above the second layer. Doing so keeps the hands warm. Related, I’ll send you a link to the bison(?) wool fingerless (foldback) mittens that I use to see if you like them (if you want...). I’m looking forward to the snow and to Spey casting on the ice for winter trout. Peace.

I gave up fishing with gloves and have started carrying a high quality hand towel instead. Regardless of your choice to glove or not, a hand towel is a day saver.

Love your vids! I’m right now trying to learn how to fly fish and I bought my own fly rod which is a good start, I also know someone who is an expert at fly fishing and he learned how to fly fish with books because his dad has never fly fished in his whole life. I also asked him if he practiced in the winter and he said yes. It was funny but that’s how you get better at casting a fly rod. In my whole life I have only went rod and reel fishing.

Thanks Drew- I just use a modified GoPro chest mount that has an accessory to hold an iPhone. I put the camera setting on 4K 60FPS and x.5 wide angle. That's about it! :)

I have neck gaiters in a variety of weights. I wear them summer through winter. They help a ton when mosquitoes are out and keep the sun off my neck. In cold weather they keep my nose warm 😁great tips Dan.

Simms G4 Waders vs Primo Zip GD Wader, whats your take on theses two great waders ?
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan Год назад
I've owned both - hands down, DRYFT Primo Zip GD Waders are the best. TONS more storage, thicker lower layers for durability - matched overall quality as Simms G4 at almost half the price. You can also save a little money with my coupon code (FLYFISHDAN) since I am now a pro ambassador. Cheers!

Hey Dan, question for you (unrelated to this video) how stable is that pontoon boat in whitewater? I have a drift boat but giving consideration to getting a pontoon similar to yours for upper coaster rivers in Oregon. I am hoping to get away from crowds a little bit but am unsure on how stable the one man pontoon boats are. Do you ever feel unsafe in that thing? Thanks for any feedback. Phil
