This polished brass, wood/lattice blades, and bell shades design was popular here in the USA in the 1980s. It seems like they were everywhere. I can remember going into Sears as a kid and seeing ones just like this hanging up in the lighting department for sale. From what I understand, ceiling fans didn’t used to be particularly common in the UK but are gaining in popularity there recently. What fascinated me when I was in the UK about 25 years ago were these round kitchen extractor fans (GEC/Xpelair) mounted right in a pane of glass in a window! Had never seen anything like it before

After reading some of the comments... It doesn't matter what way the blades are fitted, it doesn't change how the fan works. Argos have had this particular fan for many years and it always had the reversible blade option. There used to be a white version of this fan which had the same bamboo blades on one side, then it had a gold stenciling effect on the other side but they stopped selling it for some reason. The fan you have seems to be more popular even these days, although though a lot of people would say they look very old fasioned now. But if it keeps you cool I guess you can't complain.

I have used one of those for last 40 years and never had a problem with them ,I know what you are going to say it`s just a diode between me and 240 volts . Life is all one big risk I guess, I could get run over tomorrow. Kind regards, al.

dereton33 It is a resistor NOT a diode and neon screwdrivers will light from static when a circuit is in fact dead also if you are stood on insulated stepladders the screwdriver may fail to indicate a live circuit simply because you cannot complete a circuit to light the neon. NEVER EVER risk your life with these devices and before you ask, I am a qualified electrical engineer .

@@ianscrimshaw7325 In order to get a shock, the resistor would have to fail shorted and the neon bulb would have to allow enough current to be dangerous. Fairly unlikely at mains voltages if the tester was constructed with proper creepage and clearance distances. I think the main problem would be is you can't see if it's lit up like in day time or and of course if you are on fibreglass ladders then it won't light up either way but If he's go out and bought fibreglass ladders or using them then he'd already would have 1 bought something else to use as. Tester 2 be a professional that works in the trade So bit stupid saying that .. I think having a tester or at least using one is better than not using one ..... Know what I mean.

This might be of interest to others but if in the future (over 20 years in my case) your main lighting fuse keeps blowing or tripping, you make the fan motor your "prime suspect". It is possible to disconnect the connections to the motor to check, and even keep using the light fitting, if it's the culprit.

You're welcome - the last time I commented about 8 months ago. I was trying to find how I'd fitted it over 20 years previously. My hunch was correct it was the fan motor (not even in use) that was causing the fuse to blow. A relief really I was dreading a full rewire of the lighting circuit.

Neon screwdrivers should NEVER be used to confirm a circuit is safe. ALWAYS use a voltage tester which should be proved on a known live circuit before testing the circuit to be worked on. Finally, re check the voltage tester on a known live circuit before you can be certain that the circuit to be worked on is dead.

@altarmasts2378

9 wires means that you are very likely dealing with a 3 way switch (2 wires are red).
@ascorpio1
@ascorpio1 7 лет назад
That would probably mean a Live feed to this point from another (3 wires), this feeding live to another point (3 wires) and one switched Live, taking the Live to the switch and back again (3 wires).
@davesimmons6866
@davesimmons6866 6 лет назад
AHuman need to add another terminal block. Keep neutrals together in light fitting. Keep earths together in light fitting. Add extra block for live in and out also use this for live going back to switch then back to live in the light.
@ZenMotoMCR
@ZenMotoMCR 3 года назад
You have 3 live 3 neutral and 3 earth wires... The 3 red or brown wires all connect together The neutral wires 1 of them is switched live and it should have either a brown sleeve on it or a red sleeve... That wired is kept separate and is live what you connect the live of the fan to and the other two neutrals are connected together which the neutral of the fan connects to these Then of course the earth's are linked together If you don't know which is the switch wire if it's not got sleeving on Take the switch off and link the wires from the switch together then use continuity tester across each neutral and live that is coming from their own individual wire... Do that until tester beeps then you've got the switch wire... Only 4 years too late...

It's a shame you didn't show how to connect the wires, especially the mounting plate earth terminal.
@James-4812
@James-4812 6 лет назад
It's very simple, but as you saw in his video, there was a red, black and green wire coming out of his ceiling. That is the old version of Live, Neutral & Earth. The colours as we know them today are Brown (L), Blue (N) & Green/Yellow (E)... If your wiring is the same as his, you simply put the Red wire into Live, the black into Neutral and the green into Earth... then you put the other earth wire (which comes with the brass base of the fan) into the same earth terminal as the other earth wire. This means that all the metal parts of the fan are fully earthed.

not sure what type of light wiring you have , but mine has a lot more connection in the ceiling as it has the ring main running through it ..
@ZenMotoMCR
@ZenMotoMCR 3 года назад
Yes... Yours is loop in system each light fitting has the circuit wire wired into the ceiling rose fitting which is taking power to the next light... Then you have a switch wire which is connected to the live of the circuit wire that's the loop in and this same wire the neutral wire is then switched live. Then the light is connected to switched live and the neutral of the circuit wire. But this man's wiring is likely a junction box system.. Its exactly the same as yours but the circuit wires and switch wires are wired into a junction box.... Therefore there will be a single twin and earth cable running from the junction box connected to switched live and a neutral.. And then the light connects to that or fan as in this video.
@ZenMotoMCR
@ZenMotoMCR 3 года назад
Lighting circuits are not on a ring... Sockets are on a ring... Sockets are on a ring because it permits the use of a smaller cable size to be used as the current is coming from both sides where as lighting circuits the wire size is already the smallest size available and lighting isn't usually subject to the same amount of load as a socket.... Aswel lighting is usually protected by a 5 amp fuse or 6 amp miniature circuit breaker and wired in 1mm or 1.5mm/ 14 amp cable.....where as 2.5mm is rated to 23 amps but the circuit breaker is like 32amps so using a ring spreads the load enabling smaller size wires to be used and makes it so the wires are not weak/less stress on them and the fuse or mcb is still the weak part instead as you've got power coming from both sides.
@ZenMotoMCR
@ZenMotoMCR 3 года назад
Or it could be a spur from a socket.....utilising an Fcu, or a spur from another light, like the last light on the circuit so wouldn't require a switch wire as such if this man has done it himself he may just use the pull switches on the fan itself..... Yano what I mean
@darklink07uk
@darklink07uk 2 года назад
the light can't be switched from a switch and the fan done on the pull cord anymore is nuts. Makes the switch redundant and you have to turn it on from the fitting even though there's 2 separate wires for the light and fan. Just wired it up like my last one from Argos that used to work fine with the fan on the loop in / out lives and the light off the switch wire. Can't make it work independently and use my existing switch on the wall. Such a pointless fitting

These lights make no sense. You have 2 separate wires for fan and light and they have to be doubled up making it impossible so switch the light on via and switch and use the pull cord for the fan.
