In this video I show how to fix a leaky toilet flush by replacing a flush valve and a fill valve. In this example we use a cable flush valve but the general principle is the same for other flush valves. You don't always have to replace both valves but this video covers both anyway.

Great video, just did this on my toilet with the same kit as you used, didn't need to remove my cistern as I had space to get to both valves. My fill valve would hiss and let out small amounts water a short time (Annoying at night unless I isolated the water to toilet) but then it eventually wouldn't stop filling up. The flush worked but some plasic piece broke so you'd have to manually push it down after a flush. Such an easy job to do, just double check before buying parts and remember to switch of water then a case of removing old one and replacing in the reverse manner.

Note: The button on yours is standing out from the lid, the sides of the button can actually be removed so you can have it sitting flush (forgive the pun) with the lid instead of sticking out like it does when you finish the job. Thanks for the rest of the video though. Going to put this to use tomorrow once I have some new screws for re-attaching the cistern to the wall again afterwards. Mine are rusted right up!

THANK YOU!!! The original paper instructions were awful. I ended up flooding the floor. I was exhausted and then saw your 'How to" and it all made sense. I bought a new cistern washer as you suggested and some new screws to bolt it back down. Wish i'd found your video first! I also removed the chrome sleeve from the flusher switch and it fits nice and snug.

Thanks for the tutorial, I have the same issues, I replaced the fill valve ok but in doing so made the flush valve leak slightly into the pan, a constant trickle. Thank you for a very useful tutorial One point relevant to our particular make of toilet was that it was impossible to disconnect the water supply as shown in the video. After a number of attempts I realised that the only way to disconnect (after turning the water off) was to partially remove the cistern and lean it forward and then pull the flexible pipe through a couple of inches which then enabled us to disconnect the water supply. Only then did we observe a valve on the flexible pipe something that could not previously be seen. Once we overcame that problem it was as per your video although because of the initial problem my wife had to assist. But very helpful overall.

Great video. I thought I could use Fluidmaster when I watched this video. However, turns out Fluidmaster only provides adaptor to fit 2.25" hole in the bottom of cistern. If the receiving end is not a pan, but a 2" flush pipe. There is no adaptor for joining the 1.5" outlet to 2" flush pipe.

What you have in that toilet is The old jolly flush valve there crap. I suspect it was refilling because it was leaking slightly through where the rubber hits the cradle. That squeak was because there was no pressure reducing bit in the feed. They look like little bits of pasta with a filter on a jolly flush. Fluid master are quite simply the best, Never the less you can always just change it from the top if your not confident in taking the whole toilet apart.(the new type isn’t that bad) Can I ask a question while I’m here do you have a vid on Steel spans for floor joists. 👍🏻

Hi. Thanks for the video. I have an issue with trying to fit the new flush valve. My new fluidmaster states it is for 1.5" - 2" and my cistern outlet is 2.5"! The protruding lip of the adapter washer comfortably goes right through the cistern outlet hole rather than sitting on it as in your video. I can't seem to find any advice online for this, nor can I find a flush valve for a 2.5" outlet. The old flush valve was also a fluid master of the same size but the whole connection seemed to have been flooded with sealant to make it fit! Any advice? Thanks.

If you look carefully mine has a gap around it as well. As long as the washer is sat firmly on the ceramic inside the cistern then it should create a seal then the lip of the washer (if centralised within the hole) will direct the water down the pipe rather than it try to creep under the rubber in the adapter washer. So I think you should be ok. You can add plumbers mate if you're in doubt and this will give you piece of mind but you probably don't need it. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

Hi, please can I ask a question. Earlier this year I fitted the exact same Fluidmaster kit as you did in this video. I'm a competent DIY'er and therefore I had no issues with the fitting. The problem I have is when I use the half flush (short flush) there is a very loud bang as the flush stops. I know the noise is not coming from the inlet pipe moving, it's definitely coming from the flush valve. I've experimented with different fill levels but nothing stops the annoying bang. Any help and guidance you could offer to stop this issue would be gratefully received. Always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work. Thanks :-)

Not sure sorry. Have you tried flushing with the lid off the cistern so you can see where it's coming from?

@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Thanks for the reply. Yeah I've tried looking at it with the lid off and it's definitely coming from the sIphon (flush). As the short flush shuts off it does it with a severe bang. It's got to the point where I'm thinking of sacking the Fluidmaster fitting and fitting an alternative. Thanks for your response and keep up the good work with your videos. Thanks to your videos I have been inspired to have a go at several projects that I was wary of attempting before (esp plastering). Thanks

@@smeggingqueeg500 have you tried replacing the top half where you adjust the flush ? These simply spin off and can be replaced I'd imagine there pretty cheap

@@briarios666 thanks for the suggestion mate but I've given up with it completely now cos of the constant banging. I went for a cheaper model and it's been fine. Thanks anyway 😃

@@markbainbridge1767 tbh I'd do the same lol I gave up with the push button as the pipe where the water flushes away is to far into our cistern so the push button system doesn't work properly literally just went out for the old style handle now fixed 😀

It's a wide jaw pliers, link to product here - amzn.to/3p2pKhI. I've just added a list of all tools and weblinks in the description section below the video which you my find useful. I usually do this but must have forgotten on this occasion so thanks for the heads up!

POOR EFFORT, the most salient instruction, in these times of water conservation, was how to adjust the height of the water in the cistern! You flew past that part, like you were not sure how to do it?
