Wooden curtain poles used to be associated with a traditional home style of decor, but now wooden curtain poles are becoming just as popular as metal curtain poles due to modern styling and the fabulous ranges of wood stains and coloured finishes. Many wooden curtain poles are also available with matching curtain holdbacks. For a very decadent window finish, some wooden curtain pole finials are finished with a contrasting colour or gilt.
Wooden curtain poles finished in a natural wood stain look particularly attractive if they match other wooden features in a room such as wooden flooring, or wooden kitchen units and furniture.
TIPS BEFORE BUYING YOUR WOODEN CURTAIN POLE.
1. Check that the curtain pole you wish to purchase is suitable for the width of the window and the weight of the curtains, bearing in mind the amount of curtain pole you need either side of the window to arrange the curtains nicely and to not restrict the daylight levels in the room.
2. If you want your curtain pole to match other wooden detailing in the room such as wooden furniture or flooring, order a free sample of the wood finish of the pole to double check that the pole matches the other wood finishes.
3. Check there is sufficient space from the end of the curtain pole to a returning wall for the size of the wooden curtain finial of the pole you wish to order.
TIPS FOR FITTING A WOODEN CURTAIN POLE
It is a good idea to check the fitting instructions supplied with the curtain pole as our fitting guides are a general guide and may not apply to your particular wooden pole.
1. The amount of curtain pole between the curtain finial and the wall fixing bracket only needs to be wide enough to accommodate one curtain ring. This measurement is normally about 3-6 cm.
2. Before you start to fit your curtain pole, clear all the ornaments from the window sill and move the furniture away from the window.
3. In some houses, particularly older ones, the windows and ceilings are not necessarily level, so when you are fitting your curtain pole, it is important to make sure the pole looks visually right (which is not necessarily level). An easy way to do this is to put a bradawl either side of the window opening in the position you think you are going to fit the pole fixing brackets and then stretch a string line between the two bradawls and then adjust the string line until it looks correct. It is always helpful to have someone to sight this for you by standing back from the window while you make the necessary adjustments to the line.
4. Before you finalise the position of the fixing bracket of the pole, check to see if there are any electric switches or power points that could have wires running in this position. Also check for heating pipes. If you are unsure, use a pipe and cable detector.
5. If your wooden curtain pole is supplied with a centre support bracket, once you have marked the position of the two outside brackets, use a string line from these positions to determine the position of the height of the centre bracket.
6. A useful idea when you are drilling the holes for the wall fixing brackets is to use a small box such as a screw box to catch the plaster and brick dust. So you can use both hands for operating the drill, seal the box to the wall under the drilling position using a single piece of masking tape the width of the box.
7. If you are using your pole as an eyelet curtain pole, make sure that the last eyelet ring at the end of both curtains is fitted between the fixing bracket and the curtain finial to secure the curtains at the ends of the pole when they are being closed.
8. Pinch pleat and pencil pleat curtains that are going to hang on wooden curtain rings should also have the last curtain ring fitted between the wall fixing bracket and the end of the curtain pole.
9. Before you finally fix the curtain pole, make sure you have the correct number of rings fitted to the pole to suit the number of curtain hooks you have on your curtains.
We have several video guides to help to measure and fit both curtain poles and blinds, so please be sure to view our CHANNEL and subscribe to be notified as and when we add new Video Guides.
