If you use a starter/ J trim on the soffit you don’t need to pin it on, seamless and no fixings on show

Prefer to sit the soffit onto the brickwork then fix the soffit with screws behind the fascia. Just weigh the soffit down with 4"x 1" or tile batten. Everything else pretty much the same 🙂

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this installation for a new build, not so practical for a replacement. It's kind of how I expect a chippy to do it, however plastic isn't quite the same as wood, particularly it is very flexible and will show up the slightest deviation. In my experience I've never come across rafter ends that are level or straight enough to give a perfect look. What I recommend is a square packer made from pvc fascia attached to every rafter end. You fix to the extreme rafters first then run two string lines one on the bottom front corner and one either higher up on the front edge or on the underside. This ensures that the fascia and soffit are at a perfect right angle and also dead straight. To level the fascia with a spirit level after the soffit is fixed I think is a bit too late, not really accurate enough but also if the soffit isn't level it won't locate in the groove at the back of the fascia board and you may have a gap between soffit and lip which looks unsightly particularly when looking out from inside the house. Another minor thing to go to the effort of fixing a ply soffit first just for the pin spacing seems unnecessary particularly as if you use a cladding pin with a flat head instead of a polytop on the from edge it is concealed by the lip of the fascia and looks a lot neater than two rows of pins. Generally the soffit sits on top of a course of bricks so can be wedged down with a packer so no pins are visible at all. If it does need a fixing then extend the square Packers back far enough to receive a pin. I'm not trying to be critical of what is an acceptable job just some tips from over 20 years of installing PVCu fascias.😀

Great job . I haven't fitted much plastic . But when I have fitted fascia I nail every other rafter and gutter clips go on the rest so as to get a Good fixing

Plastic fascias I remember those. Just coming in about the time I left 22 years ago. Fascia in Oz is one of three things. Pine board, hardwood board or on a lot of new houses tin. Never seen plastic here yet. But then where I live 75% or more of the roofs are tin. My place is tin roof fascia, gutters the lot. Very neat job as usual and your weather looks nice too. Dreaded summer coming here. Working in temps way over 40C sucks.

I always use a 12mm plywood sub soffit and a 12mm plywood sub fascia. Soffit vents are key as well.

Kicking myself not to have thought about pre-nailing the boards before offering up. DUH! For the fascia - I prefer fixing on to a timber board or plywood sub base instead of the rafter ends. I have read (but not seen) that plastic fascia even at 16mm can distort over time when supporting the weight of tiles. Likely a timber base for the fascia can make things a bit more easy when fixing gutter brackets.

Don’t know if it’s obvious but you didn’t mention not to send the nails all the way. One less tap than is needed, snug but not home 👍 as the plastic can distort (pan in) if over driven and the coloured facias can bruise 👍

Obviously you know what you’re doing and are a brilliant carpenter but I’ve always found setting your plumb cuts back 2 inches and fixing a 6x2 (or whatever suits) all the way along the bottom of your rafters helps a great deal. Especially for keeping your nail positions neat

i usually pull the heads off the pins and get the fixings behind where the guttering brackets are going to sit, screw guttering on with screws into joists/ply backer and it's solid. Also superglue and sticks like sh*t for them joining strips and they don't go anywhere. Liked the tip of just cutting the join in the other side of the facia to make it symmetrical, I've wasted so much facia getting the join dead in the center

It's always interesting to see how construction are done in different parts of the world. Securing fascia boards are no easy tasks and safety is of utmost importance. Well done, Robin.

I like to pre drill the fascia joining and corners pieces and fix neatly will soffit pins also gives a nice look and fixes them nice and secure

That is very high standard!

I always tack my polytops in the fascia first before getting it into position, You'd be surprised how many people actually hold the fascia up and then start pinning it... If there are any Cowboys tuning in, Don't worry if you cut the soffit a bit small the fascia lip will cover it!! 😉. Nice job shaggy tidy

I do that so different to you. I put a timber on the rafter ends and use headless pins right at the front of the soffit and put the soffit on top of the bricks so I can’t see any nails or if it goes up to brick il fix a batten and nail to that. With a timber on the rafter ends it rides the undulation better to fix the fascia

Always better to nail down from one side and work your way along or you can get gaps/ripples where it is not flat.

Ply on the joist ends too? Makes for an easier fit.

wish swanson would do a metric speedsuare at 150-160mm. The 5mm incremental notches are ever so handy but the size of the thing means I end up using the imperial one for everyday use.

We use paper thin metal facia cover in Canada lol. It goes over the wood facia board. So it's basically a two step process.

Word of advise to any1 trying this out. Take the plastic protection film of first. Otherwise you might come across a nasty pigmentation in the board or dents or scratches etc. After you pined it. The only way to get it off is to break it. And good luck getting a new one from the supplier after that.

I think new home builders need to watch this 😂

Hi Robin, I use a dws780, I get deflection in cuts, especially when doing a high bevel cut on a piece of skirting, even with a new blade(Freud, 100 teeth). Is that something you experience with your DeWalt?

used PVC to trim out a large garage in the north where there is a lot of extreme temps ... the PVC expanded and contracted soo much the PVC plugs I used to seal the fixtures that were recessed into the material all popped out. all the plastic bits from cutting PVC worry me so I try to vacuum everything as cutting

Another tip you didn't mention, just glue one side of the cover strip with the mitre fix otherwise it will crack in 6 months, plastic moves alot in the heat and cold..

Nice height scaffold Robin, lost track of the amount of times I've done a roof and the scaffold is about 6 inches below soffit height and all the inside poles are going through the soffit

What type of ply did you use for the soffit Robin ?

Worth mentioning fascia height - it’s not random. If using concrete tile the top edge of fascia board is usually 25mm higher than top of batten. Basically one tile height. Change according to tile type.

Cover strip, can you use small polytop nails? I’ve not used mitre fast but used silicon etc in past and it’s fallen off!

Does the roofer fit a tilt fillet or have all the weight of the bootom row of slates on the facia if its not tiles?

I’m constantly repairing peoples soffits and facia where facia corners or joiners have been glued with miter fast or miter mate etc. It doesn’t allow for any expansion or contraction and breaks away over time, If your going to glue it use a polomer based glue if not just pin on one side that then allows for any expansion etc. Mitre mate is just super glue it was not designed to deal with the changing of humidity and temperatures nor the expansion or contraction that timber or upvc will have.

What is the easiest way to determine whats size soffit board and facia board is required and how high the facia board needs to finish above the rafters.

How high above the rafters do you leave the fascia? Is it the height of the baton?? Is there a set distance, (after installing the baton) - for the tiles to sit correctly when overlapping the height of the fascia?

I find a blunt cross-cut saw is much better for plastic than a hacksaw. I keep my old saws for just this purpose.

Surprised you had your level out to check the Fascia was level Robin - Was the Chippy who cut the roof in a bit dodgy??!! 😆😜

I do fascia and soffits on our jobs in a similar way, however i also put a ply facia on first then use capping fascia rather than maxi boards, you can then use the smaller soffit pins rather than the big ol fascia poly pins, i think this looks better, also with the soffit board use a single pin with a head near the building, on the front edge pull the pin head off and nail close to the edge, the overlap from the capping facia will cover the pin, leaves a much neater job. as always loving the videos, keep up the great work.
