Thank GOD I found this video. This saved me a ton of money and headache. So glad to be able to drive my car in the rain again!

I had several gallons of water draining into my car so the spare tire was completely submerged. :( The problem was only partly the faulty / leaky tube as described in the video, but also, the drain tube terminates into a rubber ribbed connector to the wheel-well, that by its design will easily clog up and is a major flaw in design. Both were completely packed with dirt and caused the water from the roof to drain into the interior of the car. I removed the interior as far as necessary to get behind the side panels to access those connectors and cleaned them out. Instead of replacing the entire tube or part of it, I just used air duct cement to fix the leaky part of the tubes.

Good video. This method is by far the best method for a permanent repair on this. Mine was for a 2010 VW Tiguan. The fronts are much harder to do than the rear. Take your time. Areas of concern are the A pillar trim piece has a white pinch clip that is next to impossible to take out. As someone mentioned in the comments here you need long pliers. I used 11" needle nose pliers and you need to twist it 90 degrees and it will come out. Its the clip that is the highest on the A trim pillar piece. You will know it when you see it. You will notice also that vanity mirror has an electric ribbon cable attached to it. Do NOT pull the vanity mirror down after taken the fasteners out remember to unclip the electrical connector first. I removed the side holy sh*t handles and the vanity mirrors to do this job along with the A pillar trim. I used this method on all four tubes except I put the brass PEX adapter very close to the attachment point of the actual sunroof itself. I did this so I could reuse the factory tube retaining clips that he removed. There is no need to do this if you dont want to. Final note when reassembling the A pillar. You put it in to place but do not clip it in. Put the tough clip in first then you will need to feed the 2 black round clips into the 2 holes and then press in place. You can fit a flat head screw driver in the side of the trim to do this. Good video.

Do you have to unplug the - wire from the car battery before taking the A pilar covers out (airbag)? I have leakage from both front side A pilars.

H Y I did not remove the battery terminal but it’s always a good idea to do so. Those airbags deploy at 8000psi and can be deadly. That being said you can do it if your careful. Remember the trick when you pull the a pillar out you will need long needle nose pliers to turn the white plastic retaining clip 90 degrees to get it out. If you pull it you will break it. You will see what I mean.

Unfortunately I've identified the source of the leak in my Touran is the front drain connector. Given the complexity of the job, I'm going to leave it to the dealer to fix, but at least they won't waste time (and my money) on finding the leak. Thanks!

Great Video. Just went through this at the VW Dealer. They said they were clogged, charged me $150 to "unclog them" but then it turned into an offer of another $700 to re-do them completely. Great job!

Very helpful video! 6 months after vw replaced my moldy and water stained headliner and carpet, have leaks again. One of the drain tubes clogged and had a crack in it. Replaced per video recommendation . Can't believe the crap that was blocking drain tube. What a poor design. Thanks!

I went to the dealer with a 2015 sport wagon and insisted that it was a systemic problem because there were so many hits on Google about it. They fixed it for free.

If you don't have a torch - heat some water up in a coffee mug, then stick the end of the hose in the hot water for a few seconds - makes silicone lines much more malleable for this sort of work.

Nice video,thanks; ---It still has the youtube sound problem, so i plugged in my (top-of-the-line Panasonic 15 year s old) headphones to be able to hear you; -----Too bad VW did a screw up like that,but i see sunroof leaks on other makes ,even doors that,on the bottom, leak to the inside of the car,imagine that! ----ANY car,of any make, with a sunroof that comes in,i put it up for sale; if it's not the leaks,it's the wind noise,due to the felt and rubber,weathered surround gasket. ---- I also had to do some repairs in cars in which the owner had the sunroof open when a summer squall came in with heavy downpours and the sunroof did not close,so the car flooded with several inches of rain water,ruining seat motors and some modules; my advice is....do not open the sunroof,it may not close again; ----Also,if anyone could just tell me the purpose of a sunroof.... i mean,you have a perfect roof over your "house"and you start cutting a huge hole in it,not very wise; in a car,i need A/C and ABS, but not a sunroof.

To answer the question about back-flow. I have not experienced any problem and I think the reason why is that by using the bigger vinyl pipe didn't change anything because it is going over the smaller drain port of the sunroof drain pan to begin with. I like to think that it has just extended the drain pan a little further down the line. Thanks for the question.

Thanks for the video. Quick question though: It looks like you've got a bigger hose going into a small hose. Have you had any issues with back flow?

I know this video was posted a while ago, but did your fix hold up over time? I also had the drain pipes leaking but the pipe near the rear tire wheel wells wasn't even attached , so it might be a good idea to get access to them to make sure water isn't draining into the spare tire well from there. Did you do the front drains too?
@paulbrooks2539
@paulbrooks2539 4 года назад
On dropping the rear headliner I discovered the pipe was severely kinked in the corner, probably been like that since it was made.Also if you park on a slope only two of the drains can work, which may not remove the water quick enough 😬

What about diverting the drains to an outside exit on the top back of the car?

Couldnt you just spread some sort of sealant around the first connector, like hot glue or silicon?
@TheJorgSacul
@TheJorgSacul 2 года назад
Hot glue would work short term, but given the amount of heat that builds up when sitting in the sun, it could soften and pop loose. Silicone would work, though.

Hello. I have VW Tiguan 2010. I have a major issue with a roof leak. I dropped the headliner and I repaired the hose and cleaned the drains front and back. Just when I thought my nightmare is over, I tested the roof of any leaks prior to re installing the headliner back to its place, the roof started now from the small white tube surrounding the sunroof frame. Do yoi have any idea how to tackle this issue?
@GFT-Workshop
@GFT-Workshop 2 года назад
The small white tube holds the wire that pulls the sunroof open and closed. Mine also leaks from there but only if I really fill up the sunroof gutter with water, but I've no idea how the water gets into that part. Did you sort yours out? I currently have my roof lining removed, and spraying the roof with a hose it doesn't leak. Need to put the lining back in next weekend, if it starts leaking again the polyurethane mastic will be going round it - I never use it anyway! Replaced all my drain tubes several years ago, and made sure the connections were sealed.

I’m looking at this video (2019) because or new Tiguan, with only 20K miles got one of these faulty pipes clogged. I find this to be the most ridiculous thing. The car is brand new and it got so much water inside it got mold. VW had to replace everything inside, all the carpets, padding and seat covers. That is absolutely nuts. If we have to pay for such a repair this would have been easily in the 5 to 6 thousand dollar range. The service department told me they have to be cleaned every 10K miles!! Seriously?? That is crazy!! Don’t buy these cars!!

. Thank you: CRITICALLY IMPORTANT REVELATION IN THIS VIDEO: fixing the leaky non-seal between drain hose and sunroof drain-fitting at the UPPER end. See RU-vid video [ toKy1GM7EnQ ] for cleaning and sealing the valve at the LOWER end of the sunroof drain hose. We HAVE to inspect and seal the ENTIRE drain hose from end to end, top to bottom, because just checking one end or the other, or one hose or another ( there are FOUR, one at each corner of the sunroof ) will not do, ALL ends and ALL corners must be checked, cleaned, refitted and re-sealed -- thanks again, very empowering. Note, our ancient GERMAN VW Passats have no leak problem, our newer Mexican VW Jettas and Golfs are horrible regarding these leaks due to horrible VW quality control, and horrible VW dealers who have no clue, and apparently don't know how to use the Internet, as they "pretend" to have no idea that this is a common problem, and the VW dealers have no idea how to address it, especially with enhanced parts rather than simply re-ordering OEM cracked, loose, and leaky crapola that's as likely to leak again as the original -- our Mexican VWs were DELIVERED NEW with these failures. .

this is GREAT video and alternative solution to a questionable VW design on sunroof drain tubes (there are four). I was looking for fix with would replace the white bulbous fitting and this is it. I just completed the procedure detailed in following video (disassembly and re-seal with silicone sealant) but am worried about dealing with this issue again in couple years. Your solution looks much more permanent. reference: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jOvMUKAAcJk.html
