HOW TO FIX A BROKEN NAIL - this is just one of the methods you can use and I'm not a nail tech so this what I know. I've used the teabag method for nails before and it works temporarily, but using silk wraps is better and tends to last longer! You can also use an extension or fake nail to cover the break and I can cover that in another video if this one hits 10,000 likes:)

As someone who has gone to school and learned nails I would recommend doing two silk wrap layers for your length of nail. And in salon we would actually cut the broken split pit off in a triangle at the weakest point and use a builder gel to fill in that missing area. Great video and you're so good at doing your own nails for not being a nail tech

So like, what's the point of patching up your nail anyways? It's not like it will grow back together? Once it's broken it will stay broken. And unless you have short nails that broke, it's not like it will grow out. Like for op, her nails were already long so it's not like that specific broken nail will grow even longer?

@@tojislefttoe7505 it's to prevent further damage and keep the length of the nail. Those side corners of the nail where the free edge (the part past your fingertip) we call stress points or fracture points. And if I a nail is going to break clean off in half - it's going to do it generally at that point. It allows a client to keep most of the existing style without having to just take the entire extension off and build it back up from scratch. This saves the client money and nail tech time

@@tojislefttoe7505 some ppl prefer having long natural nails and nails don’t grow back instantly. we also know that natural nails and extensions look completely different so it wouldn’t look great. also what if the extension pops off? one short nail, nine long nails. ALSOOO nails break further down than the free edge. what if her nail broke near her cuticle? she would want to patch it up to prevent further damage.

Hmmm that’s such weird advice. Not sure what state/country you’re a nail tech in, but where I am, we wouldn’t just fill it with builder gel. You just patch it with the silk, file down until the glue is smooth and design as usually. Then you’d just let the patch grow out.

you can also cut off the inner tag in a clothing item- it's made from a similar texture as the silk wraps but for free!

I like the silk wrap because it has a light adhesive on one side that holds it in place until I'm finished gluing. You get a lot of silk wraps in a package, and I'm pretty sure I paid under $5.

As a natural nail hun, it sucks when my nail breaks. I normal just trim it down to avoid it ripping. When i remove it myself it makes me feel better, I've never thought of gluing my real nail I've gotten used to parting ways with the one that breaks. Mine usually grow back fast (wish my hair gave the same energy lol) but this was very interesting to watch.

I feel your pain! In my case, this one was too low to trim so I had to patch it until it grew out. You can totally patch it but also you don’t have to, sometimes it’s fun to trim them all down and start fresh:)

You should very gently buff the area to create a rough texture so the glue and silk adheres better to the nail, and wipe with a tone just before applying the patch to ensure all ‘oils’ have been removed. I’m 53, and have been using this method you demonstrate since I was 18. Thanks for sharing with the world ❤️

As a nail tech, it's basically how you do a nail wrap. If a split is particularly bad, you would put down a layer of glue and let it dry, them apply the glue, wrap, then coat with another layer of glue and then hit it with the activator. Of course you want to keep up reapplying the wrap until the Crack grows out. Reapplying as in "filling" not applying wrap over wrap.

I feel you - I think it’s partly genetics but mine are bendy too. Ik nail strengtheners can help a bit but if you use them too much the nails will be brittle and start breaking.

Take fish oil !!! It’s made my nails grow long and strong, finally some on my right hand broke but it’s my dominant hand. My nails would neverrr grow long before w out breaking. I was shocked bc I wasn’t taking it for that but noticed it as a side effect! I was like hmm what’s changed.. fish oil? I read the bottle and yup supports heart, joints, and SKIN!

The difference between tea bag and silk wrap is absorption of the adhesive. Because it’s silk it absorbs some of the adhesive but a material like nylon wouldn’t. Paper would absorb some adhesive but doesn’t have the woven quality as a fiber it has overlapping layers. The paper will be a smoother finish when buffed because it sands down easier and is made of small particles. Woven fabrics can’t be buffed without risking the structure and all you’re doing is removing the top layer of adhesive. Best practice is to have more vertical strips/support to keep the nail flat/straight. if you incorporate a woven patch you have to worry about how to lay the fabric as something diagonal or with more horizontal lines may warp the shape of the nail over time if it’s not properly supporting the top.

@@Emma-nq8lb if you just broke your nail you can put clear coat top coat on it with the strips. It’s flimsy but it’s good enough to drive to a real salon/hospital if need be to fix your nail appropriately. (I think it’s a little iffy to have a break and try to save it over trimming the nails I know it sucks but I think in the long run there’s less issues with pain/possible infection or cuts/still beautiful when trimmed short vs having long nails. Short healthy nails are still wonderful to have and you can grow them long again or long enough to get a set applied to them.

This was so well-explained and easy to understand! My nails are quite weak and thin, and tend to break or peel when they get too long, so I have to keep them pretty short and use nail strengtheners often. Extra respect/nostalgia because of the Lofi version of the Steven Universe themesong! 🥰

Great tip! I also find that wearing gel nails helps SO much to prevent breaking. Whenever I have long nails and I wear normal nail polish, one of my nails always breaks. But with gel that doesn't happen.

When you’re applying the builder gel to your nail after applying a base coat, apply a second coat mainly in the middle of the nail. Then hold ur hand upside down. You might need to strengthen the apex of your nail especially if ur nails are flatter and longer.

For someone in nail tech I would just want to say if that happens you don’t want to put anything on it after you put nail bond on it, you wanna let it heal over time so that it doesn’t break as easily than before. Hope this helps🫶🏼

In school we learned to cut the wrap to the size of your nail(in your case if you want it just to cover the break, use tweezers to place it) so try that next time. So you don’t have to cut the excess off after it has hardened on your nail. And you can follow the buffing/filing and then polish design as you please

After the silk wrap use rubber gel base! It’s fantastic! Helps my weak nails. It works better than any other gel base! Thin coat (don’t cure), add thick coat. Hold upside down 20-30 sec. Then turn right side up & cure. File, shape, gel color and top coat ❤️👍🏼

When we did nail art years ago we used acrylic paint to do the designs. Usually in the little pots. I find it easier than nail polish as that dries so quick. X

Also, do two or three layers of fibre especially in a ‘high usage nail’ ensuring each layer sets and is dry , repeating mild buffing in between layer applications. Will make a great patch. Also it helps to take off a bit of the length, so there is less stress in the cracked area. Just suggestions. Your video is lovely.

Ughh, me seeing this after just putting builder gel over my broken pinky nail last night 😩😖 I mean, it worked, it's there. I even added a little extra length, but a patch or bandaid of sorts, the silk wrap or even a tea bag as I have many of those on hand, seems like it would be better. Idk how long this will last. Most people don’t just dump the tea out to use the bag. To fix a nail and not only is it convenient that you most likely already have that but it’s environmentally friendly because your reusing a product instead of going out and buy another product. In a pinch most people arnt going to wait for the package to arrive just to fix a mail. The point of in a pinch is that your going to use what you already have laying around. But for someone who has week nails but grows them long naturally using those fabric pieces would probably be a good investment

I have super long nails, and I’ve used both tea bag and silk, and I can honestly say I think the tea bag works better! Sure it’s not “stronger” when you try to tear it, but it absorbs the glue/nail polish bwtter and sets risk hard. It’s also cheaper and readily available so no harm in layering up, or taking it off and starting over as needed. The silk wraps peeled up for me too, especially in areas that “catch” more.

Nail tech here and I use poly gel to glue the broken nails and then gel colors on. It’s way more simple, less messy, and it helps the nail stay strong until the new nails can grow.

From a nail tech this is perfect! Since its going to be covered itll last a bit longer just keep glue handy as natural oils lotions repeated moisture will break the glue down but thats normal. A good alternative that would last would be clear gel polish as the glue if u dont have a light any uv light will cure it as long as its a 40w bulb. Or an led flashlight

okay so i’m a junior in high school and as a girl it has been a HUGE struggle for me to have long,strong nails and i had a time where i was consistent and taking care of my nails but last week i cut them really short because they kept breaking can you please help me with some tips on how to grow them,what to use,and how to clean up my cuticles? ps i admire your channel so much and i love how aesthetic you are and how pretty your nails are

For anybody who doesn’t have silk wraps, what I do is: 1. Get nail glue (brush glue) 2. Put it on the broken part 3. Wait for it to dry and put on some sort of nail polish or gel (I would NOT recommend using acrylic because that could damage it even more) 4. Let it dry and put on a top coat TIPS: 1. Don’t use your nails as tools!! 2. Always wear gloves while working with water! 3. When you shower, never shower with bare nails!! 4. Gel works best to protect! Hope it works for you!

Just happened to me two weeks ago, I did the same as you, but instead of the silk I used a piece of cotton, it's looking very good so far. Mine broke till the middle and veryyyy in the flesh of the nail, imagine the pain!

I used silk wraps and nail glue on my nails for years to strengthen my nails. Those silk wraps are leas than $10 at Sally Beauty and do multiple sets. I used 5 Second nail glue and it worked great.

I would suggest a retinol strengthener if your nails are not super strong, or just clear nail polish on the underside of the nail to prevent breakage

Ive fixed a toenail a similar way but i didn't know silk wraps were a thing!! I used tissue and clear polish.. this was so 2.0 love it! 👌🏾

Years ago, when I used to visit dubai every twice a year, they used to sell these nail polish remover thingies for 2 dirhams. I've been using these they work so well. I'm glad to see people actually using these nowadays.

Your nails are gorgeous! Not just the wrap but the length and shape as well. My nails aren't very strong either. I always try patch my broken nails too. I'd rather do that than cut it off. They're just too pretty to cut off and if it's not necessary, why do it? Thank you for the silk wrap tip! 💜
