I watched your video after my generator wouldn’t produce any electricity. We just had a storm and it’s now approaching 10 degrees out. All of my drills are battery operated but I decided to just wing it and try using an angle grinder, and spinning the disk and it freaking worked!!! You kept us from freezing tonight, so thank you !

Thank you so much! My power goes out every time it rains. My husband is on oxygen, his emergency tank was gushing air out when I switched him over. Cranked the generator and it wasn't producing power. At this point I was almost in tears. It was 230 am. I do like I always do and went to RU-vid. If I had not seen your video, we probably would have paid someone to fix it. After my nervous breakdown lol. Again thank you so very much.

I really had my doubts that this work. I spun the drill backwards 3 times and then it started spinning forward on its own. Slow at first but then the speed started started going faster. Now it's perfect. Thanks for posting the video.

Brad you are the best. I got my neighbor's generator fixed. I used a second battery operated drill to rotate the electric drill fast enough and it worked like a charm. Thanks a million.

Another success story here! We were about to pay someone to get our generator fixed, but this did the trick. In our case, the 3 spins wasn't working and I almost gave up. Then I tried spinning the drill as fast as I could without letting it slow down and BAM it worked! Thank you!

AWESOME DUDE!! My Onan 4000 generator has not been run for more than five years. After the need of rebuilding the carburetor and cleaning out all of the orifices that were plugged from dried ethanol I was able to get it started and and running good but no generator power power. This drill gig brought it to life and I am a happy man!! Thank You Sir!

I had not run the NorthStar generator in years and was testing it in preparing for "Florence" . It ran fine, but no power. I found an old plug in drill and tried this trick. It worked!!

Worked! Amazingly simple. Did not beleive this before trying it myself just minutes ago on a small Honda that was dead. I was thinking of making a male-male cord with a series bulb to shock the gen from the grid when I stumbled over this video.

This worked after I replaced the capacitor from my full bridge rectifier. Very important (while the generator is running) to spin the drill in the opposite direction than it would spin if it was plugged into an outlet that had power while holding down the trigger. I used a second cordless drill on the screwdriver setting to spin the corded drill so it if kicked back it wouldn't hurt my hand.

Ok.. With all these reviews in the morning I'm going to Galliano, La. My uncle is having the same problem with his generator. I'm bringing mine just incase.. It's worth a try.. I'll repost when I get back.. Wish me Luck..

Fo.und this by accident and it saved the day. My Onan in my boat ran well but no power out after sitting for months. Used this by using the outlet closest to my generator. Didn't work by hand turning so used another drill to turn it and wow it worked!!! Thanks and what a thing to file away in the old grey matter.

I'm English and really like your U. S. of A. drawl...enjoyed your introduction immensely...incidentally, though I may be mistaken a generator relies on the weak PERMANENT characteristics of the rotor electromagnets to produce just enough current to activate the regulator to feedback this to the excitor coils...this permanent magnetic characteristics tends to decline with time if not "recharged" by use...what I have done using the latest super magnets is 20 minutes or so of stroking the outer casing of the alternator and this will induce enough magnetic field to get the genny running...by the way running the super magnets around the casing when the genny ISN'T running...the corded drill trick will work on some gennys but others block the reverse current at the regulator so not reaching the excitor coils...good luck from a damp and cold South East London!!! 👉🇬🇧👈👉❗👈

Just found this after Zeta blown through.....Thought I was going to have to change out brushes and AVR.. Tried it. After turning the drill backward for about two-three minutes, the drill started running...Thanks for the tip..

saw a question in either the comments on this or another video. It asked if one could use a second drill to spin the first one. I plugged in my variable speed drill to the generator with a 1/4 hex bit in the chuck. I set it on reverse. I attached my cordless drill to the exposed portion of the bit, and started the generator. I pulled the trigger on the variable speed drill and started the cordless drill in the forward direction. I ran the combo for a couple of minutes. I uncoupled the cordless from the variable speed and, voila, the drill was running on its own from the generator. I plugged in a light, which worked. Threw on a multimeter and it showed power and also showed how dirty the power is on this thing and why you wouldn't plug your computer into it.

Well I went to my uncle's home and he's 88 years young.. Why he didn't have power was he forgot to turn the breaker on.. Now he has power.. Thanks for the info.. Maybe one day I'll be able to use your info..

I have a huge 7000 watt generator acting up just like this and sitting in my shop that has been awaiting me to take it in somewhere for repairs. I keep putting it off because its so big and heavy. I'm trying this trick tomorrow , I hope it helps! I will owe you a big thank you!

I just read that when you run out of fuel when running that your coil can lose magnetism as the appliances go dead. I am happy to find your video on how to fix if it happens. Thank you!

I wonder if this is why my almost brand new generator is having this issue. I run it every couple of months to make sure everything is good and then I cut the fuel valve off and let it run out of fuel as to keeping the carburetor dry from fuel. I went to use it for the first time in 2yrs yesterday and it starts up fine but has no electricity on any of the plugs.

@@juansoria4086, i think that only applies if you have a load on the generator, the appliance using the power tends to weaken the magnetic field as it tries to draw power from the generator 😊

It should be noted that you'd want to have a leather glove on when you attempt this with an older drill. With the trigger depressed, when the field energizes the drill will spin at full speed in the forward direction. Some older or larger drills with keyed chucks could injure your hand with the key-engagement teeth on the chuck if you happen to have a tight grip on it when the circuit energizes and starts the drill.

It's better to use a grinder. You can roll the grinder on a surface instead of holding the spinning part of a drill. It's much safer with the grinder.

lol this actually works!! btw, Sparking a car battery across the brushes access panel does the same thing. Touch the negative car battery terminal to the left side on a Coleman (neg brush) and spark using the positive battery terminal (generator running). Use screw drivers in a jumper cable to touch and spark. The generator has to be running and spark it about 5 times. makes a scary blue arch , but harmless. Now measure the voltage. should be 115-130 volts.

i have a 6 volt portable generator that stores power from solar panels, it's basically the same storage in regards to capacitors but only runs 6 volt usb plug ins, i'm wondering if i can re-excite the battery storage using something like a battery powered 6 volt motor plugged in through my usb the same as a drill to get the same affect?

One should exercise their generator, under load, for 15 mins each month. Lubes engine seals as well.

You might have figured this out but it is best a drill that is not variable, just on or off. I have an old drill that worked just fine, it is an old Milwaukie 1/2" chuck and it worked perfect. That is why the angle grinder also works, it is just on or off. The variable part of the drill effects it somehow, not sure why.

John Rice more than likely the Automatic Voltage Regulator if the engine is running at the correct RPM. Could also be a field connection loss if you are getting half your rated voltage.
