Tried it and it fixed my at least 10 year old Harbor Freight 3 ton floor jack. It stopped working altogether so I added jack oil and bled it at the rubber plug the way everybody says to, and that made it work. But it still leaked down slowly, about maybe an inch or two an hour. I bled it the way you said and it's working like new now. Thanks!

You are a genius. AC Delco 3.5 ton jack. Use it infrequently. Last weekend I needed to jack up a beam in my garage to take the sag out of it in order to build 2 temp walls for beam replacement. I would jack up the beam, measure the stud length, run to my miter saw, cut the stud, run back in, pump up the jack again, install the stud. What a beating. I was looking into rebuilding it when I ran across your tip. Worked like a charm. Thank you very much. I will be back at it this weekend to cut our old beam and replace with new. The jack will come in handy.

Another thank you here. I thought I had a bad check valve and would have to tear it apart, a nice messy and time-consuming job. But no! I found this video and it worked. I used to rebuild these jacks. A lot of times its the seat under the checkball. It gets damaged by a bit of debri and what not. If you take a brass punch or even a hard punch wipe the seat clean place the ball in the seat and smack it fairly hard. It will reseat itself. Its really hard to damage the check ball. They are really hard. You dont have to take a shop hammer 😂 just a small ball peen and give it a little whack. put the spring and cap back and it should hold real nice.Wipe the ball clean especially if you use a brass punch.

If you jack it up and it holds but it slowly lowers at the same time you hear a clicking noise it most likely the shutoff valve not closing tight or air in the cylinder. Try this and see.

Hi Mike I have seen that many times if you tighten it up too much then lift a very heavy load . What worked for me is using a big pipe wrench and slowly reverse the handle at the base and it should be fine. It's a common thing to happen .

I’ve bled mine three or for times now but it still will not jack up my car. I can jack it up with no weight on it and stand on it and won’t go down but not my car. It’s a 3 ton jack that my buddy gave me. Anything else I can do?

Yes if all else fails im sure you seed a seal kit and your jack will be good as new. Try that Dave
@lmalino695
@lmalino695 5 лет назад
@Steve -- Sounds as though you're implying an internal leaking seal -- how so? I'm thinking that something may be keeping that check ball from properly seating.
@SteveRobReviews
@SteveRobReviews 5 лет назад
Could be but a leaking seal will with no load will seem to work but under load not hold. Yes check the relief valve and make sure it is closing all the way when you turn in the handle . Don't give up Dave :)

Good tip on the jack handle but you don't need that T thing. I just use a regular flat screwdriver, you know when I am not using it for a pry bar or a scrapper. Haha

Steve ... I have the same jack you are showing 3 1/2 TON Mitchelin in the video with no obvious leaks. Follow your tip pumping the jack on the top end and now my jack works fine. I saved having to buy another jack or wasting my time installing a new jack kit that was not needed. Thank you, … Juan

Another thing I've found in my experience, most of the videos showing bleeding hasn't worked for me. What I have found that did work was to pump the jack to almost full height, tip the jack vertically on its front end (wheels off helps hugely), open the release for the jack to go down. When on end like this, ALL the air is released from the lift cylinder before fluid starts being released. Set the jack down, open the fill plug, add oil as needed. Repeat at least one more time. I had a solid lift immediately, where previously I had a spongy jack following instructions from various videos. When doing it like this, you have to be DAMN careful, as there is a lot of weight to these jacks! Maybe even use a rubber pad when standing the jack on end.
