@Steve's Small Engine Saloon IF there is no spark because the cable has basically stretched/gotten longer and can no longer pull the connection back as far as it needs to go, shouldn't one be shortening the cable so it can pull switch back into place to make the spark connection? Just a question so I have the correct information next time I need it, and Thank You!!
@@theducklinghomesteadandgar6639 The length of the cable, itself, is fixed - it can not be lengthened or shortened. The trick to unscrewing the plastic ends just makes the outer casing "longer" which fixes the problem for a while. Shorten the inside cable or lengthen the outside casing - two sides of the same coin. Good one, Steve! - Joe -
@@joesinakandid528 Thank you for responding and explaining!!! I'm sure my brain understood that somehow, or would if had been physically looking at it, but it is refusing to relay the info to me!!! lol!!! I'm missing something for me to grasp how making to the two points farther away from one another, when being slightly elongated likely from heat and a little due to normal wear and tear is the original issue in the first place, how can making the two point farther from each other fix it? Wouldn't the space between the two ends need to be shortened to return it back as close as possible to factory distance be what fixes the issue? I know it's something simple and I'm gonna smack myself in the head, I must be missing the knowledge of how the connections and inside cable work with one another and how they are placed around their connections spots. I'm gonna check the mower tomorrow!!!
Wow! Almost hate to admit that I've been working on small engines for 17 years and I had no idea those ends screwed on🤦♂️ thanks for sharing another awesome tip👍
Yeah, that twisted wire cable can and will stretch. Great cheap and easy solution! You are always so helpful with these kinds of tips. Thank you, Steve! Keep up the great work, stay safe and I hope you enjoyed that beer!
Today I went from frustration to a big smile on my face. My lawnmower would not start because there was no spark. I bought a new ignition coil, no spark. I bought a new spark plug, no spark. I went to the internet and found Steve's video on the stretched engine brake cable. I noticed that for some reason I parked the mower with the engine brake disengaged. It must have stretched the cable and would not release the spark mechanism. I followed Steve's instructions and the mower instantly started with the first pull. My advice- do not store mower with stop bar tied to handlebar. Thank you Steve, you are the man! 😁😁
Wow...30 year career in the outdoor power equipment industry, and I never knew that! That just proves that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Always great content Steve, thank you!
Had given up on this used lawnmower a friend gave me and was about to by a new one. This completely fixed it and got it started right away. Talk about saving your viewers time and money. Legendary RU-vid channel!!! Thank you!!!
Steve, that’s one thing so simple that I would have never thought of it. I filed this in my memory banks and I’ll never forget to check the cable first. Brilliant!
Steve you are the best! I’ve spent the last few days going crazy because I had (weak) spark, fuel and compression. Tightened up that cable and she fired up first pull, thank you!
Man your a life saver!!!!!!!! All these years I fought with this lawnmower and that's all what it was. Smh . And I saw the cable wasn't going back far enough and didn't pay it no mind.. Man I appreciate it!!!!!!!! 👍👍
Steve , love your videos . Sometimes such a simple repair job , can save $$ and the inconvenience of a trip to town and a 2 week wait for your mower to be looked at . Very informative , your videos have helped me many times .😊 Many Thanks . 😁
Thanks Steve!!! I watched this video a wile back and this morning gusss what my 3 year old toro was doing,,, I was like where is that video!!! I found it again and it saved the day! Yard is done!
Wrong season (SNOW!!) but I am going to look at my snow blower for this. And consult with my neighbour’s son who has a natural aptitude for small engine repair. We (he) have already had to adjust the cable controlling the snow thrower. THE motor would not engage on the last day of use. Thanks Steve for the tip.
Thank you Steve. I bought a brand new mower today and you can imagine my disappointment when it wouldn’t start. Turns out, it was exactly this. One small adjustment later and problem solved. Thank you 🙏🏻
I've been trying to figure out the spark on my lawnboy for 2 days and here I am back in the race to get this going. Thanks! Hell, I was about to replace every green wire on the thing.
I wish I would have seen this earier. Ive pulled one of my mowers apart at least three times. Cleaned the contacts on the magneto , changed spark plugs and replaced the carb. Tried your method , second pull. Thank You
Thanks much! I would have never guessed on how to lengthen the cable. In this economy we have the STEVE SALOON SOLUTION SAVER! Bet you can't say that 5 times. Then again you have better things to do. Thanks again Steve.
Great solution! I can see me trying different things (and using ugly words ) and not having the eloquent fix you just showed the world! And there's probably a situation where this same solution will work. Thanks, Steve!
Thank you sooooo much. I was about to buy a new mower. I thought the problem was the stator. Saw this video and tried your advice. The mower started first pull. THANK YOU.
THANK YOU STEVE!!!!I I changed the spark plug, checked the coil, and cleaned the carb nothing until I saw your video FOLLOWED YOUR VIDEO WORKED LIKE A CHARM. THANK YOU AGAIN
My mower worked GREAT last summer, but when I pulled it out this weekend it wouldn't start. I checked the sparkplug and it looks almost new. I couldn't easily test for spark myself, so I don't know if this is my issue, but this is an easy thing to check. This video is AWESOME and it may have saved my mower. I can't wait for work to be done so I can go check this. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks so much for your video!! Seen I had little spark once out of 100 times I pulled it so I thought ignition coil, two coils later I find your video, same exact issue. I just want to say thanks again for posting this maybe your lawn mower is doing the same thing if it's not the coil! 6.5HP Briggs and Stratton motor yard machines mower
This was my issue! Thank you for the video. I was using a lawnmower for about 20 minutes before it died. This cable must have stretched just passed it right at the end of the 20 minutes.
Been working on my craftsman mower for a couple years now. Ready to give up on it. Than I stumbled across this video... started up right away, hD to mow my yard twice
The turning the cable I didn’t know I’ve been working on lawnmower for over 30years never saw that before I’ve made may cables replaced cables never new that thank you
You identified the problem I have on my Husqvarna R52S series lawnmower with the Briggs & Stratton 625 series engine. The top part is easy to unscrew and adjust, the engine end that you show at 2,20 I have no idea how it comes out of its retaining metal clip and I don't want to force it and break the black plastic cap. Typical, Friday evening in Europe, no chance of any spares before Monday and trying to find away to shorten that inner cable so I can attack the jungle of a garden. Thanks for your help.
Great Vid. Thank you! Disconnect the top of the safety shut off cable from the handle, turn they fitting counter clockwise 3-4 turns to lengthen the cable and reinstall. The switch should now work properly.
Hey Steve! First off, I'd like to thank you. I'm a Stihl small engine mechanic and your videos have been extremely helpful. (I definitely owe you a beer) I have a request for a future video. I have little experience with mowers, it would be amazing if you'd consider going over back firing issues and also mowers that start and run but won't restart. Thanks again for your small engine wisdom.
I think that I own you a beer !!! I've been messing with this thing for weeks and was ready to send it to a repairs shop. A few quick twists and "wham" Started right up and saved me some dough. Thanks Steve!
Thank you for pusting this video! It took me in a new direction of thinking, and I was able to fix what I thought was a spark/coil issue. Problem solved and running like a Champ!! 😁
Thanks Steve. You have many admiring viewers. Have been watching you for a few years now. Very entertaining and humorous. Hopefully have a brew with you this year when we make it back to the island from Prince George. Miss the ocean. Cheers Mike Hyland
Well, that's one situation that I haven't hit yet. Pretty much every mower that a neighbour brings me is bunged up due to ethanol, but now I am ready for that one time when I get a no-spark. Thanks Steve!
This was exactly why my mower would not start. Recently replaced the carb and it would still run a little rough and even would not start. Adjusting the cable fixed it.
Steve, you’re amazing. I’ve downloaded and saved your videos in my Gas Powered Toys files I keep on my computer hard drive as well as flash drive. You are a great teacher. Very much appreciated.
Hey Steve, I'm trying this tomorrow, My 6.25 Quantum Craftsman (Tecumseh) had no spark --- out of nowhere, after running perfectly for years. FYI... new Champion plug & ignition coil is $15 on Amazon, just in case.
Oh my word I feel like an idiot for not knowing this as a small engine mechanic!! THANK YOU STEVE!!! 🎉 All these years I’ve been bending the bracket slightly or replacing the cable because I couldn’t pull the ends off… lmao
