How to fix a water leak in a 2006 Volvo S40. During heavy rain the interior front seats, carpet, and doors would become wet. This was due to a clogged drain tube from the sunroof. This video will show you how to unclog the drain tube and stop leakage.

I was able to clear mine with a 36" heavy duty cable tie (zip tie). No need to cut into the tubing. Just open the sunroof, find the drain holes on the front corners and feed it down the line. You may hear a gurgle and will see the water draining out under the car.

That may solve it temporarily, but he cut it to extend the hose so that it drains completely outside, otherwise it runs the risk of draining inside the car due to the short length of the tube. I unclogged mine last year and it was dry as new for a year. But after snowfall this year, the leak is back and just as bad as before... this time I'm going to try his suggestion to avoid it from happening again. Hope it works 🤞

Excellent video. I had wet carper on driver side. Fixed my problem exactly the same way. I think the grommet at the bottom (where it passes thru the firewall) was clogged because I could not force air thru the tube. Water was backing up and leaking where the tube connects into that grommet and then dripping on my floor mat. I poured water into it and just kept working with until I got it cleared out. Will be checking the passenger side soon. Thanks for the clear instructions, good camera work and NOT playing background music :). 5 Stars!!!

Note, there is a black flexi strap at the top of the cover panel to hold the panel back in the event that the airbag goes off. I was able to pry it free using a screwdriver to slide it free from the panel. The opening of the rubber drain hose is berried low down in the corners of the dash making it extremely difficult to get hold of them. I found the best way for me to connect to them was to use the nozzle from a DIY silicon cartridge. Cutting both ends to ensure a large enough exit for the water whilst still small enough to be easily pushed home into the drain. The original hose was then able to be pushed down into this easily. I too cut the original drain hose in order to blow through the drain and after attempting to use a push bikes outer brake cable found I got success breaking through the blockage use a couple of long tie grips. I reconnected the drain hose together with a bit of garden hose that was exactly the correct size to provide a water tight seal.

Thanks for the video. The part about adding the little extender tube was perfect, and I think solved my problem. Like your example, the tube barely fit into the fitting at the bottom of the A pillar. With an extender tube, it fit in nicely and was much easier to get in place securely.

I had a serious leak for several years. Repairman said it was coming from the front windscreen. I had the screen replaced yesterday. The repair guy said there was zero bonding material on the top of the screen and he could push it out with his hand. Worse than that he said the front screen pillar was completely rusted away and the whole thing will fail soon. The back of the car is flooded with the carpet, mat and under carpet foam soaked through. Surely this is a recall issue. The windscreen replacement guy also said this is common in Volvos. Mine is a 2010 V50 which I bought new in Sweden.

Ya the same thing happens to my 05 s40 t5 I find water in the carpet behind front driver and passenger seats more then the front but now since I found this vid I'll definitely take a look at the drains bc I had the car for 12 years now and barely drive it I'm surprised that happened bc it only has 70,000 kilometres on it I wouldn't really think something like that would be an issue bc I never open my sunroof and I maintain it super well but anyways thanks for the vid I appreciate it

Leaking rear passenger side. what to do?
@andrewarmstrong7310
@andrewarmstrong7310 6 лет назад
Us compressed air and blow it out, probably clogged. The worst thing to do with a sunroof equipped car is to park under a tree, or on less than level surfaces.
@NorthernChev
@NorthernChev 5 лет назад
Which corner it is leaking from inside is inconsequential. The drain hoses are at the front of the sunroof on both sides. Clear the both out. You're leaking out of the rear simply because it pools up enough to run out the back on your sunroof tray.

Ziggy Zuko I'm not sure. I didn't notice any drain holes in the rear. Are you sure water is not entering the front and flowing to the back?
@maximus3ae
@maximus3ae 6 лет назад
Ziggy Zuko, it's definitely the same drain. If you pull the seats (front) out, and pull up the carpeting you'll see how water flows from front to back. The rear seat foot well is low spot. So fix leak as shown in video. I would then recommend pulling out all your floor liners. Because the foam below which is quite dense, is like a sponge and full of water that has no where to go. If you unbolt the driver seat (4 bolts) and kinda lean it back, it'll allow you to pullout the driver side front floor liner. The rear liner is a bit more cumbersome, as it extends the width of car in rear. Once out, let all water dry out in sun and leave car doors open for a few hours on a sunny warm day. Then reinstall.
@ziggyzuko151
@ziggyzuko151 6 лет назад
maximus3ae yeah I found the drain hole is in the rear wheel well, you can actually see it from the trunk if you pull out the slot where the tailights go, but I figure out it wasn’t the sunroof but rather a loose weather strip I did unclog the drain though just to be safe

There are some real horror stories about Volvo S40's suddenly losing all power and electronics, instruments going haywire, etc. because of this leakage and flooding of floorboards and carpeting.. See carcomplaints.com, and look for not just wet floors, but hazards to life and limb. Apparently there is critical wiring that passes under the carpeting and it gets destroyed by water. I was looking to buy an S40 until I looked this up.
@Snakewild96
@Snakewild96 3 года назад
My opinion due to stupid moron designing car they gave no slack in drain line n over time it can clog but also with heat etc I think some shrinkage occurs n pulls gasket out at base of windshield. . . I did same thing to guarantee some slack as this guy. . .while your doing it you can pull loose top area that connects under ceiling panel. .simply remove grab handle n visor n you can access hose from top to bottom. I put a little clear sealant on every connection. . . But. .if been happening long time u can pull carpet n power wash foam backing cause will get musty n mildew development. ..
