How to fix a leaking toilet cistern with dual push buttons.
Toilet cistern still running after flushing?
Is your toilet leaking constantly inside the bowl after flushing? Mine was but the dual flush cistern mechanism is all working correctly so the leak is at the base of the toilet where the cistern unit is attached. This simple to follow tutorial shows you how to remove the Cistern dual flush mechanism and then remove the base unit attachment and washer\gasket and clean it all up and fix it back in and stop the leak. So if your toilet WC is constantly running from the cistern to the bowl or pan it is hopefully easy to fix. The tiniest bit of grit on a rubber washer can make the toilet leak. The culprit for my leaking toilet was the rubber seal underneath and there's a big thread plastic nut that goes up underneath the system that holds that on and gives the cistern a water-tight seal.
If this washer gasket fails or gets perished then water will constantly run into the bowl.

Thankyou! I flushed my toilet this evening and then a steady stream of water kept running down, kept hearing the water kick in every 30 seconds so it could refill the cistern a couple of centimetres again. Very annoying. Live in a rental and I don't think the cistern had ever been cleaned out, it was gross, but I managed and now it's stopped. You're the best!

@@LurgsHowToGuides I live alone in my two storey townhouse but I believe my toilet cisterns were swapped by my thieving next door neighbour whom fraudulently have a key to my house because I really use my downstairs powder room toilet unless I am in the kitchen cooking my meals, washing up my dishes or washing my clothes and I do not ever use my main bathroom toilet neither because I have an ensuite in my master bedroom on the 2nd floor. But instead of buying a completely new toilets at this moment I will settled to repairing them all until I can afford to totally redecorate and remodel with new bathroom fittings and fixtures in them all. Thanks for sharing your video, I deeply appreciate it.

I turn them both off but thanks to your RU-vid video I can repair them myself but I am going to get silicone /rubber replacement flush seal with clip since my toilets are idea standard Armitage shanks toilet.

My run leak was caused by the washer inside the flush unit, the one that allows the water to flush when the mechanism is raised but I only discovered that after resealed everything else on the cistern. It had distorted to the shape of the housing over time and did not form a tight seal, removing the washer wiping it down and replacing it upside down fixed the leak, a five minute job after a whole morning of wasted effort elsewhere, lol.

Hello, thanks for your brilliant video, after managing to get the dual buttons out, I struggled to get my hands down the cistern, but I took the white square float off and managed to get the flush unit to move, I went a quarter of a turn, but still can't get the unit out, I'm wondering if the bottom section is going round with the top, as it will not pop out, any further advice, thanks very much, Charlie Alderson

You should be able to put your hand underneath the cistern and hold it so it doesn't spin round.

If you remove the buttons and lid and you push down the mechanisms with your finger are they still stiff? The buttons push down on those mechanisms, maybe they aren't lined up properly?

What make is that toilet and cistern? (ours is exactly the same and I don't know what it is). I presume the washer is universal? thanks for an excellent helpful video jeremy

Jeremy Kirk I've checked all over and there's no model or make on the toilet. Yes the washer is universal but what I did was remove the old one then take that to a local plumbers merchant to get an exact match. The rubber does corrode eventually. Olld washer is brittle and cracked, I have it ready to take for a match in morning. I'd never taken that bit apart for. Had intermittent leak for ages, which always seem to resolve by cleaning piece that comes off. Many thanks again, I have subscribed.

I have this exact problem. I've already replaced the valve washer on the cistern bit as in my case it was perished badly. It's made an improvement but I still have a low level leakage and I think I need to replace this washer too. Any chance you can link to the product somewhere? I'm not exactly sure what I'm after and struggling to confidently identify it.

Your best bet is the washer that has perished, remove that and take it to a local plumbers merchant and they will have loads of them. Then fit it back and make sure area is all nice and clean. Good luck.

@@LurgsHowToGuides cheers mate you're a lifesaver. I've just gone back and the system I have is an ideal standard. I don't think I can remove the part that is fixed to the bottom of the cistern like you did in the video. I've tried to turn it but it's not budging and the thing will likely snap before it shifts. So I'll need to get the cistern off the wall and the bowl. Problem there is one of the bolts to the bowl is rusted to buggery. Cue two hours with a dremel in the tightest corner on the planet. Nothing in life is every easy... cheers though.

Ur a legend ....wot ya need seal around the thread if that washer is central it wouldn't leak.....and the nut under that cistern may fall off if ya do this and plastic thread could be trimmed to and you would have to remove them rusty screws 👍🙂😂

I have this same flush but can't access the seal from the main section on the bottom. The seal is worn out and passing water so looking to replace than buying a whole unit. Can it be disassembled as I am struggling and don't want to break it being heavy handed. Thanks!

baddy900able As long as you just use your hands it should unscrew like at 3m30s. Make sure you can isolate the mains water and never start a plumbing job in the evening incase you need to go buy bits! Hope you get it sorted.

I went to screwfix to buy plumbers mate paste but they gave EVO-Stik Plumber's Mait putty. Are you able to tell me the brand name so I can buy it online ?

Hi, it's called 'Jet Blue Plus' and made by Wolseley in Warwickshire, marked as 'multi purpose sealant'. Think you should be able to get iit in a plumbers merchant like Plumbase, hope they still make it as it's magic stuff.

HM MH Any hardware shop. It's plumbers mate paste. Amazing stuff. It doesn't set, it stays gooey but does seem to stop small leaks.

Well, at around 2:20 I saw your bit about keeping the float up. I think my float might be not reaching the top properly and letting water in, which goes down the overflow tube. However the flush mechanism is bad too. These cisterns really are a pile of crap, aren't they? They seen to be built to break and waste water.

@@LurgsHowToGuides hello! We have a toilet flushing system similar to this a push button roca toilet - recently someone - “refitted” the cistern however now it is leaking out the left side - what could be causing this ?!

@@cheeseoreos493 Take the lid off then put the buttons back on. Flush it and try to work out what's happening. Sounds like the float is getting caught and not shutting off the water. If you can't figure it out then best get whoever refitted it to come back!

Khwezi K It could be the washer at 3:08, if that degrades it doesn’t seal properly. You can replace this. Else just replace the entire unit, prob about £20

A BCD You could use plumbers tape but really that’s for smaller threads. In theory you don’t need to use anything. Just don’t overtighten!!!!

Finally got the long white bit out but no way the bottom white bit will budge, its as if it was welded in.

In my experience I would isolate the water from the toilet, remove the entire flush unit then take it to a local plumbers shop\hardware store and get an exact match. Good luck.
