How To Fix a Leaky Beach Volleyball Valve

Easy volleyball valve repair with things found in common homes.
Leaky volleyball valves are a quite common problem, especially with the Mikasa VLS300 ball. In this video I summarize everything I have learned from repairing over 100 balls that stopped holding air. These solutions seem to be easier than a valve replacement, definately cheaper and doesn't require any special tools. Hope this helps!
Of course the same valve fixing methods can be used for any sports ball, like a soccer ball, basketball, football or polo ball that uses the same type of valve.
----------------------------------------------------
VALVE OIL IN THE USA:
In the comments many people have reported that valve oil is difficult to come by in the USA. There is a silicone based threadmill belt lubricant product that seems to be very similar and should work very well also for fixing the valves of volleyballs and other sport balls. This product has the exact same function: lubricate rubber without dissolving the rubber, and the bottle even seems to have a good design that might make it possible to squeeze the lubricant straight into the valve. I have at the time of writing this not tested this product myself, but by all logic it should work just fine. Let me know in the comments if you end up trying it!
Here's a link to this alternative product: (AFFILIATE DISCLAIMER: By purchasing this product or anything else from Amazon.com during 24 hours after clicking the following link, you will without extra cost to you support the Learn Beach Volleyball Fast-project financially which will help bring more high quality beach volleyball tutorials and helpful videos to the world.)

@@mikekoehler9551 Ouch, damn that sucks! Maybe you'd be able to fix it with the rubber band method, but after that you gotta be a bit careful when you pump the ball, in the worst case you*ll end up pushing the rubberband all the way in and then the ball will have a little rattling sound after that haha.. But as long as one is careful with inserting the needle for pumping afterwards, this method has worked fine for me at least!

GREAT VIDEO!!! Thank you so much. FYI...Petroleum based lubricants (like WD40, motor oil, bike chain oil, general household oil, etc.) eat and dissolve rubber (both natural and synthetic rubber). If you can't get sports ball valve oil, a natural plant or animal based oil is better. Olive oil, vegetable oil, or even butter. This is also why you should never use a petroleum based leather conditioner on a leather ball, speed bag, etc... It works well on the leather, but will dissolve the latex or rubber bladder. Cheers.

It helps me a lot Now I have 1 ball, loosing air from around the valve...not from the hole but around the valve
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast Месяц назад
My guess then is that it has a hole in the actual bladder, and then the air comes out around the valve so air is trapped between bladder and outer leather and sips out next to the valve if you put the ball under water for example.) The only way I know how to fix that is cut up maybe 5 cm of the leather, pull out the bladder, find the place with the hole, fix it like a bike inner tube, put it back, sew the outer layer together and pump it up. It will leave the ball with some extra stitches but hey, a ball is better than no ball right?

I always just put the rubberband in with the needle itself, and once it is in I pump it in the same go, then remove the needle super carefully and then hopefully I won't "ever" need to add or remove air again from the ball if I get the pressure right (slightly hard if you pump it up in a warm temperature, slightly soft if you pump it in a cold temperature, then it's always a playable ball regardless of temperature changes..) Could not find ball valve lube or even valve replacements. Tried regular lube, does not work and made the leak way worse. Finally used a rubber band and it seems to have stopped the leak. Much thanks for the tip, mikasa game balls aren't cheap.
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 4 года назад
Awesome you got it to work! Yeah they aren't cheap and quite often the valves get so bad that just the lube simply won't fix it. But the rubber band method is golden, just be a bit careful when you pump/empty it, try to get the needle to go to the side of the rubberband rather than pushing it in! Oh yeah, some people here in the comments have had success with olive oil, that could be an idea to try if you ever take the rubberband out or have another problem ball!
@jessg5941
@jessg5941 2 года назад
OMG!! I had a 10 year old Tachikara sv-5ws that I just couldn't bring myself to throw away because I loved it so much. But the valve was hard and brittle and leaking like crazy, and the puncture hole looked too big for a small rubber band to seal it. So I tried the larger rubber bands, but none of them did the trick, and it was taking forever to get them to stay in the hole, but the hole just kept leaking even when the rubber band was inserted. I did this all while the ball was semi-deflated. Finally, on my literal last try, I picked this small brown/beige rubber band and decided that since the hole was too big for it as a single strand, I decided to use the rubber band as is without cutting it, and just twist it in as like a double stranded rubber band. Twisting the rubber band and lubricating it repeatedly with some Evening Primrose Oil that I happened to have on hand, and just stuffing it like a turkey without inserting the needle completely into the hole is what I did. The more lubrication, the easier it went in without needing to penetrate with the needle much. Finally when the rubber band was half way through and only 50% of the loop was sticking out, I decided to lubricate the needle and insert it between the loop strands of the rubber band, and pump away. For the first time, I didn't hear it leaking as I was pumping! The next part was to slowly twist back and forth, in a semi-twist motion, slowly removing the needle, and voila. The ball is pumped like new and its holding all the air for the first time in years!!!! I can't tell you how exhilarated I am to see this. Now my volleyball looks like it has a little loop handle on the outside. Quick tip for this though and for those in fear of the rubber band falling into the volleyball the next time its pumped. If you want to ensure this doesn't happen, instead of clipping the rubber band when your done so you can't see it anymore, I taped it down to the volleyball on the side of the valve with some electric tape. Electric tape is the best because its super adhesive and contours well to various shapes, won't come off in water or rough play, and is pressure sensitive. This way the rubber band will never fall in and you can guage how much of the band you need to reinsert back into the ball should the band ever pop out upon re-inflation. Hope that helps!!
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 2 года назад
Hahahaha amazing!! :) Thanks for sharing! And I like the tape method for making sure the rubber band doesn't disappear in, is the "bump" that ends up on the ball annoying at all when playing?

I did it with sylicon (the one jelly-like for plumbists). Just push a bit inside the valve, then put some tape on top to prevent the pressure from pushing out the sylicon, and let it dry. Rub gently to clean the ball from the sylicon in excess outside the valve. I did 2 months ago, ball is still working. Of course you have to inflate properly the ball beforehand.

it works well to lube the valve with oil with no air in the ball - you can put your pump pin into the ball (with oil on it instead of spit) and allow the ball to deflate through the pin. Slide the pin in and out and get enough oil into the hole and valve. After a bit, repump the ball and test it again.

@@LearnBeachVolleyballFast - it can help get a little more oil deep into the hole (or perhaps even into the ball side of the valve) when the air isn't pushing the oil back out again (during a leaky valve situation). On a different note, I can't find any oil here in Canada at the moment... is there a recommended safe alternative to 'official ball valve oil'? Any thoughts on using pure vegetable based glycerin (very hard to find sport ball valve oil here)? Walmart has this for very cheap. I saw that the original Mikasa valve oil says it's made of glycerin. And the pure glycerin is not petroleum based (which dissolves rubber).
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 3 года назад
Hmm good question! Honestly I don't really know what glycerin actually is so I don't know what the difference would be between vegetable based glycerin and "normal" glycerin, if there even is a difference, maybe glycerin simply just is vegetable based? That being said though, you are right in that the original mikasa valve oils are glycerin. I think I looked online once and saw that glycerin was available at walgreens and CVS and whatever the pharmacies are called over there in the US (a few years since I visited now so don't quite remember! 😄) So yeah, as long as it doesn't dissolve the rubber then my guess would be that you'd be all good! I think silicone spray can work too. When you rub two fingers against each other with valve oil inbetween it feels sort of slimy but also sort of dry/rough (hard to explain with words?) at the same time. If thr Walmart stuff feels like that I'd guess you'd be good to go! :)

Hey! So I am not a rubber, oil and chemical expert, but from the reading I have done, it seems like Vaseline might be one of the oils that can dissolve rubber..! findanyanswer.com/can-you-use-vaseline-on-rubber-seals I have no idea how fast this dissolving happens though, and I have never tried. It might be completely irrelevant in a beach volleyball valve. Not sure. However, now, since you have already put vaseline into your valve.. I guess the "damage" is already done unless you will run off trying to flush the valve with some other oil after reading this comment haha.. Interesting! I have actually never tried to take a valve out or replace on, so I am a complete beginner in that area! It feels like volleyballs are already kindof a narrow niche product, and replacement valves are again 100 times more niche and very low price, so it kind of feels like it wouldn't make sense to sell them in a way, except if you are a big volleyball store and want to be able to serve that maybe 1% of your customers that want replacement valves.. Hey! Sorry for the late reply, somehow didn't get notified about this comment.. Anyway, I don't know if its the same oil is the short answer. @LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 4 года назад
Hahaha interesting problem, definately never heard of that one before! Sometimes when you use the rubber band fix method I show in the video, you end up pushing the rubber band all the way in later when you try to pump the ball up, and you also get something that rattles inside.. I never thought it was a huge problem but that half of your valve might be bigger and heavier and more annoying!! However, what I am thinking is that I'm not sure it's a guarantee you'd get that half valve out even if you took out the part of the valve still stuck in the hole..! At least I'm thinking the part rattling around inside will have the same diameter as the rest of the valve, and the hole in the ball where the valve goes is really really snug, and you won't really have any way to "grab" that valve piece that's inside and drag it through the hole, right? Or am I thinking wrong here? Are you 100% sure it's actually a part of the valve and not something else? What I could think of is like a part of the needlw you pumped it with, or mayybe a small stone that would have been stuck in the valve and then got pushed through..? Regarding finding replacement valves, I have never done that so I actually have no idea..! But read the reply to ypur pther comment I wrote some more thoughts in that! :)

Hello! If you need to pump it again (or empty the ball for some reason), you should try to push the needle next to the rubberband, like inbetween the rubber band and the valve rubber. Preferably with valve oil if you have, or at least maybe some saliva that makes the needle slide better and not stick to the rubber. It works almost every time. The worst thing that can happen is that the rubber band ends up inside the ball and you have to redo the rubber band fix (and you end up having a ball with a little "something" inside it, still playable but people will react to it when they pick the ball up haha.) The second worst thing that can happen is that the rubber band comes out with the needle when you take the needle out, if that happens just redo the rubber band. Did that help? :)

Haha I have experienced 3 possibilities: 1. You are skillful and probably using valve oil and are able to insert the needle next to the rubber band, pump, and then take the needle out without dragging the rubber band out. 2. You just go for it and end up pushing the rubber band all the way in. You end up with a leaky valve again as well as a ball with a little something rattling around inside it. Still playable if you fix it with another rubber band but people will wonder why your ball is rattling.. I never let random people pump my fixed balls because of this haha. 3. You get the needle in all right but it ends up pulling the rubber band out with it on the way out. Means you need to redo the fix. Hope that makes sense! :)

Does that make sense? No guarantee it will work hahah but could be worth a try! :)

Since the valve broke into 2 parts, I'm assuming there's a gaping hole where the valve used to be now. If that's true, you could take a flashlight, hover it over your head so you can see into the ball. Take a wooden stick, about the diameter of a toothpick, and attach some sticky gum to the end of it. Shake and center the broken valve pieces in the bottom center of the ball, and insert the stick inside with the gum at the bottom end, and poke the valve with the gum until it sticks to the gum, and gently remove.

Hi, Is it okay for the ball if the valve itself falls inside the ball. It can be fix?
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 2 года назад
Hmm! If the whole valve somehow goes inside of the ball, I don't really know any way to get it out without damaging the ball quite heavily.. So if that has already happened and there is simply too big of a piece of the valve inside the ball that it becomes super annoying to play with.. then I don't know. I mean it is possible to simply put a knife through the ball, make a hole through outside leather and the bladder, take the valve out and then try to fix the bladder with for example glue and bike inner tube (or simply a bike inner tube repair kit) and then sew the outside leather back together.. But it won't be pretty, quite a lot of work and no guarantee of being able to make the bladder fully sealed. I have done this once or twice.. Nowadays if I get balls that are this bad I unstead make them into medicine balls by cutting the leather maybe a 5 cm straight cut, rip the bladder out, fill with sand and then put some tape around it to make it go together again. Can be useful for some workouts! :) I have also heard of people filling balls with old socks (instead of sand) to make heavy setter training balls.

Damn, is that when you put it under water that the bubbles are coming from the seams? The thing is that the seams is not what is leaking (they always do) but rather the bladder inside, and then the air continues out through the seams.. I have not done it myself but there is a chance that it vould be fixed with some type of "spray in bicycle tire fix" that seals the hole from the inside. What I have done is cut he leather up maybe 3 inches (for example opening up one of the seams), pull bladder out and fix the hole with a normal bicycle tire hole repair kit, then put bladder back in and sew the ball together again. This however leaves a quite ugly stitching on the outside of the ball, might work for your own training but people will probably toss your ball away in favor of another if possible when playing games..

i'll for this assume that it's going all the way through the inner bladder and leaks air: i have experimented with 1. rip up a part of a seam between two of the outside panels. 2. take the inner bladder out through the hole you just created 3. fix the hole in the inner bladder with a bicycle tube repair kit, the bladder is pretty much like a bicycle tire inner tube. 4. put the bladder back in, and sew the panels together. i have no idea how to sew the "inside stitches" that the panels are sewn with from the outside, so the stitches i made became visible. ball was still playable though. this process took quite a lot of time, and the ball has some new weird stitches afterward so people might be skeptical to playing games with it afterwards... if you just have a tiny tiny hole, i'd actually first experiment with some rubber glue/shoe goo/liquisole (different names for a similar product) and just try to fill the hole with glue. might or might not work, but if it works it would be a lot less work and a better result compared to ripping the seam up and stitching it together afterwards!

@@yacinebelkemiti6058 Okok! I am afraid I don't 100% understand which part of the ball you mean.. But if it's a problem around the valve I'd use rubber glue, actually I have seen someone use duct-tape too haha they just had to change the piece of tape every now and then.. Glue would be better than tape of course. :) Maybe take pictures or video if you want me to understand where it's leaking from? :)

But wait with the band method can u pump air aswell or not?
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 3 года назад
Yess you can! You just have to be a bit more careful when you insert and take out the pump needle. Make it oily/wet (preferably valve oil but just spit works too in the worst case) and carefully push it inbetween the edge of the valve and the rubber band. And when you take the needle out, also be careful and maybe hold the rubberband in place with a finger so that it doesn't come out. If you accidentally push the rubber band into the ball, you can just redo the rubberband but your ball will have a little something inside it and make a sound for the rest of its life unless you change the valve completely. It's allright to play with though. If the rubberband comes out, then just redo it.

Yes, probably! I myself haven't used anything else than valve oil, but if you read around here in the comments you will find people that have used both vegetable oils and silicon spray I think! Just stay away from oils that dissolve rubber (petroleum based oils I think, but don't take my word 100% I am not a chemist haha!) :)

what is the brand of the valve oil?
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 6 лет назад
Hey! So the one I use is a Swedish brand, it literally just says "Ball valve oil" by JO Sports. The smaller one I had (Mikasa brand) I believe my volleyball club got for free when they purchased tons of balls. So I did some research on how to find this stuff in the US (I don't know if you are from there but I assume I'll have some american people watching this) and I actually couldn't find any online. What I found though is that there is something called silicon threadmill lubricant that is used for threadmills, that one should be able to use as valve oil. It comes in a similar package and should work the same! Also, I think that the actual valve oil is actually glycerin, and you might be able to find that somewhere. It's kind of a funny product, because it seems to simply not exist in some parts of the world (I was asking for it in sports stores in Bangkok and they just laughed at me.) No wonder peoples balls break! However, I'd say silicone or glycerin are probably the chemicals to go for, but I'll look into it more and probably even create a separate video about the topic later. If you get yourself some threadmill silicone and it works, please let me know! / Alex

thx so much for this video and your reply. so the small mikasa bottle is glycerin but the bigger bottle isn't, right? glycerin is like a slimy gel, but your bigger bottle seemed more like actual oil. am i right?
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 6 лет назад
Hello! Happy to hear it helps! I am actually not completely sure whether the bigger bottle is glycerin or silicone, it didn't say on the package and no info to be found online haha. This whole valve oil thing is like the one matter where "just googling it" has completely failed me! However, I'd say they are both quite similar in substance, but yes the Mikasa one might be a bit "thicker" while the bigger bottle is more runny. Not very different from just normal canola oil or whatever one would use for cooking, thicker than water, makes your fingers slippery and has to be washed away with something more than just water. If we go and think about what we actually want to accomplish, which is to make rubber "fresh" again so it seals tight, I guess pretty much any oil should work as long as it doesn't start dissolving the rubber. Again, when trying to make myself smarter with google, all I could find was vague guesses or super complicated answers where rubber types, chemicals etc in different combinations probably lead to different answers, and I do not know what type of subber ball valves use, if all brands use same etc... So a part of me wants to say that I have used just normal motor oil for engines for the same purpose on rubber in the garage back in the days and that same vehicle still runs fine, at the same time I can find someone online claiming that motor oil will destroy rubber. So if this answer can at all be seen as "authoritarian" in any way, I'd probably say stick to glycerine or silicone, that should hopefully keep you on the safe side. Again, when I googled for glycerine, there seems to be different versions (?) of glycerine as well haha so I don't really know. Wouldn't be surprised if this worked just as well with canola oil, but to properly know the answers I'd probably have to consult a chemist as well as all different ball brands to really get down to the real answers! Maybe one day when this RU-vid.channel has grown huge and famous? :D Hope I atleast kind of answered your question, and that your volleyballs will stay inflated in the future! :)

@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 5 лет назад
ohh really? never heard or seen anything like that..! but they do say the valves are replaceable, that you can basically take a kind of hook and just pull the valve out, and put another one there instead.. i wonder if your leaks in that "seam" between the replaceable valve and the actual ball..? i'd probably first try to just put some rubber glue/shoe glue (liqui sole is a good brand at least in europe, i think theres a brand called shoe goo in the states) around where it leaks and see if it fixes the problem.. if not, maybe replace the valve? or maybe figure out a way to get the replaceable valve out, oil the outer side of the valve (it seems like olive oil has worked for people here in the comments..!) and then push it back in, and hope the inside of the valve didn't get damaged in the pulling out process? hahah not sure, kind of just throwing out ideas here!

What if I pushed the valve all the way inside ? The rubber tiny piece went in 😁 How do I get out back?
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 6 лет назад
Yasser Ahmad Hahahah, you mean the small rubber band went in or somehow the whole big valve?! If it's the rubber band and you now have a little piece inside the ball, there's probably no way to get it out without destroying the ball hahah. Don't worry though, the ball is still playable except some people might get a bit skeptical when they pick it up hahaha. If its about the whole valve I have no idea, never had anything like that happen to me except like a little bit where the valve would get a hint "dislocated" within the ball but it's very easy to get back. But I know it's possible to rip out the whole valve and replace it too, but I think you need some special tools for that and I've never tried that. Now that I think of it it would probably be possible to get the rubber band out (the more common problem) if one replaces the whole valve!

@LearnBeachVolleyballFast

Yasser Ahmad Ohh I see! I think they have like a special "hook"-tool to get it out but I have never done it myself. How did you make this situation happen though?! :) Hahah thanks, happy it helps! :)

@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 6 лет назад
But of course, the hook tool might not work unless you can get the valve to a place in the ball where you can both hold it steady somehow and reach it with the hook! I guess the tool is made for taking the valve out when it's in its original position..!

I've been using rubber bands around my wallet for years and I've noticed a wide range in the quality of the bands. Is there a specific type of rubber that we should look for?
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 3 года назад
Hmm! I personally lack that much experience in rubberbands that I'd have noticed a huge quality difference. I mean sure, some are a bit stretchier and "fresher", some are a bit stiffer. I actually think the quality wouldn't matter too much in this case as it's just for basically putting more rubber into the rubber valve so that it gets tight, but the thickness of the rubberband changes how difficult the job is to do. (Hoever, of course, if you have the choice I'd choose a fresh elastic rubberband over an old and grumpy one..!) I always try first with the thin rubberbands because they are easier to get in, if the ball still leaks after that I'll go through the trouble of making a bigger/thicker rubberband make it's way into the valve.. :)

@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 2 года назад
So if there is air coming out of the seams when you push the ball under water, it means the bladder is broken somewhere, possibly close to the area of the seam where the air comes out. I haven't tried those injectable chemicals (which I'm guessing fix-flat is!), but would be fun to hear from someone who has. What I have done has been to cut up a couple inches of the leather, draw the bladder our and fix it with a bicycle inner tube repair patch, put the bladder back in and then stitched the leather together again. You'll end up with a couple inches of semi-ugly stitching that definitely isn't there on an original ball, but at least the ball is playable! :)

no added weight but I did shake it around, leave for a few hours, then deflate and squeeze all the foam out. the can has a hose and valve for a car tire like any pump so the needle screws right in without any problem. it adds air and foam as it's meant for roadside emergencies so be careful not to overinflate.
