My laptop screen was too dim low from startup. So i connect my laptop with some external monitor and go to display settings and detect identify screen options. So firstly it detect the external monitor screen and after unpluging the VGA cable My laptop screen come back to normal.. It work for me... Even i tried it before reaching to this video 😀 Hope it works for someone too ... Thankyou ^_^
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! i was doing a routine cleaning on my laptop and afterward the screen wouldn't even light, so i was trying to troubleshoot which led me down a rabbit hole of thinking it was some ribbon cable, where that ribbon cable was on my specific laptop (which i could never find) etc. and im using a $1K+ laptop so I'm super concerned that i may have broken it and would have to send it in. NOBODY said a thing about it possibly being ram, not even acer community. first video i watch suggests i check the ram, (which i had removed for cleaning and put back in) and I'm always gentle with the ram so i don't break it and waste a hundred bucks, so I remove, and snap back in the ram sticks with some confidence and lookey there, boots like freaking normal. nearly had a heart attack.
Thank You Sir ! I had 2 RAM slots and one them was faulty. I found the root cause and with another working RAM slot , I am able to work. Heartfelt gratitude 🙏
I think your video should be on top of the black screen issue im gonna grab the other 3 laptops in the house and give you 4 thumbs up all i run into is a reset 4 thumbs up from me brother and im subscribing
Thanks for the video very informative, now, do you guys make videos about shortcircuits ? on the motherboard? or, how to use the multimeter ohms range? to check for them?
At this time, no. We are not planning on any motherboard repair or troubleshooting videos. That may change at some point though :) Thx for watching and commenting !!!
Enjoyed the video - very well done. I spent good part of today trying to get an old Compaq Presario running. It was before used Vista recovery to create a clean install (I want to give it away). Back when I originally gave up on it, the screen was bright, but jumping. But it would work fine on an external monitor. Now external works, but LCD screen is blank. But with flashlight, I see the images are there. So I will check cable. Unlikely RAM because it otherwise works fine. On my old Toshiba, it was the GPU that had come loose. I fixed that by re-flowing with a propane torch! You never mentioned that. More likely GPU than CPU, I would think?
Most of my viewers dont wont use a torch to repair motherboard components. And in doing that, there is a high risk for most inexperienced users of damaging their motherboards. Its just not the target audience of this channel. Good luck :)
@@PC_Monkey Makes sense. I did it on my Toshiba Satellite as a last resort. It has amazingly held up for 7 years. Wife still using it. I covered the motherboard with aluminum foil with just a small window for GPU. Applied a lot of heat with small torch while pushing down with large screwdriver. Some talk of hot air gun, but that won't hack it. But like you, I would not recommend this unless only alternative is to junk the laptop.
@@GrahamM-sm1hv np :) I leave most posts as most discussions are good and at least get ppl thinking :) And who knows, perhaps others with appropriate skills will want to try this :)
Thank you for this informative video. The display of my laptop has the same problem but couple of times during the day it works well like it has no problem! Please let me know of your opinion about it. Thank you in advance.
@@PC_Monkey Thank you for your response. I connected it to an external monitor and the desktop of my laptop could be seen properly on the external monitor. I have not checked the RAM yet though. What do think the problem could be? What do I have to replace? Do I still need to go for the RAM test?
@@AminValipour If it displays correctly to an external monitor then its most likely an issue with your LCD or LCD Cable. If the RAM were bad, it would not work with a different display.
My problem is that I went to settings and accidentally put my brightness to the 0 point where I didn't see anything except black pls Tell me what to do
You cant set your brightness to complete black. So if your screen is black then the computer is either off or the computer screen is not working properly. Are you sure the computer is on? If so, then your on the correct video for troubleshooting. Have you tried the steps seen here yet?
hi ! i have a similar issue with the really really dim screen, but it doesn't happen at the launching but randomly while playing games, i don't think it's a gpu issue since, even if the screens is really dim i can plug my laptop through hdmi into an external screen and everything works fine on it, the laptop's screen stays dim but i can start games etc ( games crashes when the black screen occurs tho, but i can restart them after ). Do u think it's a RAM issue too ? the pc is brand new ( i cannot try ur method to determinate which ram bar is problematic, or atleast i don't know the way to acceed to my RAM bars in this PC however i've already opened it sometimes ) my config : Alienware M17 R4 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10870H CPU @ 2.20GHz 2.21 GHz NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU 32go RAM ( sorry my english is meh )
This only happens when your playing games? If you exit out of the game, does the screen start working normally again or do you need to restart the computer?
I have an ancient dell pc. Yesterday it was working well, but after a break of 25 mins when I restarted my pc, nothing was visible. I used my flashlight on the screen an it was faintly visible. Amidst it all, I could read system CMOS checksum bad. Pls suggest what to do.
I need some help...last day while watching some videos my laptop screen dimed out slowly and now the screen is totally blacked out. I don't see anything through the screen and it is totally black. When I connect with external monitor I can see that my motherboard is working fine. Should I purchase a new cable?? As I mentioned the laptop screen shows no light or anything... My laptop has a LED Backlit IPS Display... please suggest if you have any idea about how to fix it.. thank you...
Yes. If your computer work with an external display and none of the other steps here found the issue, then its most likely the LCD or the LCD Cable. Reseat the cable first. If that does not work, replace them one at a time :)

I recently opened my Lenovo s540 IdeaPad laptop to add m.2 storage when I did I tapped a capacitor and it exploded my question is is this expensive to repair it gets power lights on but no screen should I have it repaired or replace it thanks in advance 👍🏼✌🏼
If that happened then your most likely looking at a motherboard repair / replacement. In my experience, it costs about the same to repair a MB vs replace it. However, most MB repairs are not warrantied by those who repair it. So its usually better to replace it in my opinion. Let me know if you would like help locating one :)
thanks for useful information. I had a similar issues with HP. It was not not ram/cmos/lcd cable.. When I remove Keyboard laptop works fine. It is HP Elitebook . I tried cleaning keyboard ribbon connector to Mother board that does not help .. Without keyboard and external keyboard and monitor it works fine. Unable to get the right keyboard model..
My laptop turns on and I can log in, but when I launch Chrome/Firefox or just leave it one for an extended period of time it crashes into the dim black screen with back light. External monitor works fine. This problem first appeared several month ago when I replaced my LCD, but it didn't happen for many months, and happening again now.
Most likely its an issue with the LCD or LCD Cable if the problem does not exist with on the external monitor. I would try replacing the cable first as its much cheaper.
@@PC_Monkey Thanks, I will try that. But this is really weird and unlike the situations in your video. It will let me boot, log in, everything is fine up until I try to launch a software.
hey what can I do if something fell on my PC, and then when I turned it on not only it said no bootable device, but now it doesn't say anything and the screen is on, but no display?
I am going to look into these suggestions, but my problem is slightly different. I have a Lenovo U400 that turns on (lenovo logo), then hangs on a black screen for a long time (maybe 3ish minutes), before finally going to the windows 10 login screen and signing in. I just replaced the HDD with an SSD but the time it takes to boot is still almost identical to when the HDD was used. Would this be related to this video or another?
So my notebook is a dell inspiron 15 7567, i was playing a game and the screen went black, the first thing that a tryed was to use a external monitor in my case a TV and it worked, the image appears just fine on the TV and if i take a flashlight and point to the notebook screen i can also see the image, is faded but i can see it, so in my case the RAM and the CMOS battery are not the problem right? now i should test the flat cable?
Correct. Your most likely looking at an LCD or an LCD Cable issue. Try unplugging and replugging in the LCD Cable first in case its lose. If that does not work, then it and / or the LCD needs to be replaced.
"This video is only for computers that work, they power on and boot, but the screen is dark.. " 10 seconds later: "First we're going to check for 'bad' RAM."
My screen is working through HDMI but not on the laptop.. Been like this for a few months, occasionally the screen will work for a few secs then goes back to black. Wonder if it's to do with opening/closing the lid as that's when it stopped working. It's a fujitsu. Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)
Try unplugging the lcd cable from both ends and then plugging back in, just in case its come loose. If that does not help, then most likely its bad or the lcd itself it bad. Replace them one at a time
So I just bought an IdeaCentre all in one Desktop and the screen is so dim I have to put a flashlight to it but when it starts up sometimes it flashes in a normal brightness. Is this a ram issue or lcd issue?
Could be either. I would first check if the RAM are both secure. They could be loose. Same goes for the LCD cables. Also, I would try to hook up the computer to an external monitor and see if the issue is there as well at the same time.
I have a situation where the laptop screen is extremely dim, but the external monitor is perfect. I already replaced the screen, so that's not the problem. Before I go through the labor-intensive attempt to access the RAM and try swapping that out, do you know if bad RAM will effect the laptop screen while leaving the external monitor looking fine?
@@PC_Monkey Thank you so much for your advice on replacing the LCD cable. After all this time, I finally got around to it today. The screen is back, but I'm not sure about the camera yet because I'm just installing the OS. The brand new cable I purchased was from the UK and the camera connector looked AWEFUL. Like it was an extremely sloppy solder/glue job or whatever they did. I ended up getting the connection made, but I'm reluctant to believe the camera will work. The connector looked a little melted.
My laptop's keyboard lights up and the fan starts spinning however the screen doesn't turn on. I usually just force shut it down and power it on until it starts up and the screen lights up, but it takes a while until it works. Sometimes I leave my laptop to die out and then when it dies it resets but I am getting tired of it. Do you think it might be a software problem ? maybe like a slow ram problem ?

If the external signal is fine and the external monitor is working fine, then you may be looking at a physical issue with your LCD or LCD Cable. Try making sure the LCD Cable is secure but unplugging it and plugging it back in. If that fails to help, replace it and the LCD one at a time till you find the issue

Thanks for the video, but nothing worked for me. I have an old dell vostro 1720 which on startup seems to be ok, with full brightness, but after about 15 seconds goes dim near to blank; it's not turned off, just extremely dim, so much so that I need a flashlight to see what's going on. I changed the CMOS battery, checked both sticks of RAM, same result (what are the chances of both sticks being bad? T_T). When plugged to another monitor via VGA cable, the image is transmitted ok. When switching from external monitor back to laptop monitor, the image is normal for 15 seconds then goes max dim again. On multiple switches the same thing happens. A strange behavior I'm having is after a switch like this, if I move fast enough and get to manually decrease the screen brightness, then the screen doesn't dim, but afterwards if I increase it to max, after a couple of seconds it goes max dim again, after which the keyboard screen brightness keys have no effect anymore. As a side note, the laptop's battery is dead and currently removed, the laptop is working just plugged in, but this shouldn't cause the screen dimming right? Any suggestions? Thanks 🙏

What about if whenever I open my laptop, the screen is black and the cursor is blinking. Sometimes the display could be seen, and yet it'll turn black again while the cursor is blinking.
I am started only my monitor without cpu but when I turned on my monitor first start show brightness perfectly only for 2 sec after that very very dim light on monitor .
Sometimes monitors go into low power mode / go dim if there is no input. If your computer is not on, your monitor may not stay at max brightness. I hope I understood your comment correctly.

@Moncester 1. This video has been updated here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e9iy30J00-k.html 2. Have you tried the manual BIOS reset as seen here? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-76I2Ec9K7lw.html If so, and if none of those fixes have helped, your most likely looking at a motherboard issue or a component on the motherboard that would involve soldering to replace. Would you like help with that?
My asus laptop stopped working out of nowhere. I didn't install anything on it, it just stopped. It has been addicted to the battery for a while and only works plugged in, but now every time I turn it on "asus" appears and then “error sending end of post message to me system halt” and does nothing. What can it be?
1. Are you able to find any Recovery or Repair options in BIOS? 2. Can you try the steps seen here? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J1ZagkSTcSI.html
I have a problem where it starts up and shows the lenovo screen but then goes completly grey replacing the windows start up. It's still on with the display lit and fan running it's just grey
@@PC_Monkey Thank you for responding! I watched that linked video soon after this one and tried the methods, it was hopeful at first but when it's not the legacy boot or set to both when it starts up after the levono screen it redirects me to the boot settings instead of starting up. Hope to hear back from you
@@shorkbork_finn If changing BIOS settings didnt work, or you cannot change those settings, then move on and try to install Windows as seen here; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wu0c8wR5Ltk.html. You can create your own install media for free as seen here; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g_UhiHScaSI.html. If that does not work, then your hard drive is most likely bad. Replace as seen here; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tNp5Kbo9uHg.html.
