How to fix almost any Vizio TV Mainboard problem just using hot air! Vizio D55u-D1 TV repair.

In this Video we have a 55 inch Vizio Smart/3D television model D55U-D1, that when powered on the little white led indicator light at the bottom left corner lites up as though the Television is coming on, however no picture or sound comes up, just a totally black screen.
In this case the problem that we are having are not the Led backlights, but the Mainboard instead. Once the mainboard is receiving the 5V standby from the Power Supply board it is ready to send the PS ON (Power Supply ON) and the BL ON (Backlight ON) voltages as soon as you hit the Power.
But instead, in this case the Mainboard only sends the PS ON voltage back to the power board and not the BL ON/OFF voltage needed to drive the Backlight circuit.
That Backlight On signal/voltage usually is produced right inside the Main Microprocessor Chip on the MainBoard. So we are going to reflow the Main micro IC on the Main board using hot air going back and forth around the IC for approx. 3-4 minutes at about 400 degrees celsius.
The obvious case is that after years of operation the IC's tend to have some bad solder connections on some of the Pins underneath the chip.

Nice to see those that are still passionate about the craft especially when everything is either smaller or in a throw away society. Good job from a tech who has been repairing since the vacuum tube days and still going.

Buddy you just saved me several hundred bucks for a new TV I was ready to go buy since modern tv's are modular and people hardly repair now days. Even though I'm a retired technician I wasn't gonna fix it after I checked the power supply and seemed like it was working, thinking I didn't want to delve into troubleshooting the rest. I live in Canada and everything is harder to find and more expensive than the US. My tv (vizio 43-C1). Taking a chance to buy the main board for a couple hundred $$ including shipping and not getting it to work I thought was not worth it since a new lower end tv would cost 400$. I saw another video where the guy changed the main board three times till the vendor sent him the correct one. So when i saw your video it made sense thinking it kind of reflows the solder beneath the big chips when you heat to 3-4 hundred degrees. But darn, my heat sink is soldered on the board so guess what, couldn't unsolder it obviously because the heat of two solder irons doesn't melt the solder. So I did heat on top of the heat sink to 600 degrees and put it back in the tv and low and behold, it worked. Anyhow, can't thank you enough, keep up the good work!!

FREEEEE TV!!!!!, i found this exact TV on the side of the road under a bunch of boxes waiting for the garbage truck. the wife and I were on a walk through the neighborhood and she walked back with me covering her face because she was so embarrassed by me routing through the neighbors trash. this is what was wrong, I got a new 4k 50" TV. she accepts now that it wasn't a ridiculous idea (this time). i didnt have a heat gun, but i did have a butane pen torch and a fancy kitchen thermometer rated for 500 degrees. so, I layed the thermometer on top of the processer and heated it from about 2-3 inches for short bursts to keep the heat applied the right amount to the immediate area. I am so happy! THANK YOU!

Worked like a charm! When the TV first started the screen was blue for a flash, then green but immediately after started working as normal. It worked so well I also did the board for an M55-C2 that I thought was dead (same symptoms) . I had already paid 75 bucks to a repair shop to fix a M55-C1 last year. Here's a hint too, I used aluminum foil with a small square cut out for the chip so I could shield the rest of the board just in case.

So I’ve had this exact same TV for probably 5-7 years now and all of a sudden it wouldn’t turn on. The power light would come on then fade away, then blink one long blink, then 15 blinks after that. I found your video, watched the entire thing, grabbed my heat gun, and watched it over and over again while following the tutorial. The first time I was too afraid to hit the processors with 400*F and it didn’t work, so I took it apart and hit it again this time with a thermometer on the processor and cranked the heat gun up to 500*F while making sure the thermometer showed at least 350*F on the processor. Pressed down and held until connections cooled enough to harden and let it sit for a couple minutes and plugged it in and what do you freaking know… the backlight is now coming on the TV is working again!!!! Thank you so so so much!!!! You just saved me from spending money I literally do not have!! I cannot thank you enough!!!

Hi Big Dog. Great videos. I’ve watched a lot of your videos and learnt so much. Ive got the same model Vizio D55U tv with no backlights or picture. The on off light would light but starts to flash repeatedly. I tried everything you suggested in all your videos to no avail. I ordered a replacement main board but when I put that in the symptoms changed a bit where the backlights would now come on and the Vizio logo appeared but then went off with a totally black screen and the on off button flashing 15 times. I got another main board but that was worse. No backlights or picture with that in. The thing that fixed both of the main boards was baking them in the oven at 300F for 10 minutes each. I got the oven up to temperature then put the boards in as they were. No takingany of the heat sinks off or anything. Lo and behold both of them worked once I put them back in my tv with all the original parts, PS, LED bd and TCon bd. One main bd still has a problem with HDMI 5 input but everything else works fine. I’d tried heating the chips up with a heat gun, changing the EEPROMS , swooping out all the other beds . I even replaced all the backlight LED strips as one strip was very dim and another had one LED out . I know you don’t recommend baking the boards in an oven but it’s the only thing that got my tv back up and running. None of the plastic connectors melted or parts fell off. I just left the board in the oven to cool off then put it back in the tv. Thought this might help some of your other viewers as it’s taken me about a month to fix this thing. By the way the power supply for this model only supplies 19 vdc to the main bd and 24 vdc to the led driver bd. The main bd then produces its own 5 vdc standby voltage . The 5 vdc voltage shows up on the power supply connector but it’s not generated there. Thanks again for your great videos. Couldn’t have fixed this tv without your knowledge.

Hey Dog, My Vizio M43-C1 would power up with the "V" logo and the "on" light bright in the left bottom corner then fade with a blank screen. Then the Indicator on light would flash 3 times brightly. I heated the chip you showed after following your disassembly proceedure. My unit is a bit different tho. Anyway, Heated it to about 320° with a heat gun for about 30 seconds. Put it back together and she came back to life. Thanks for your unselfish sharing of knowledge!

Just a little knowledge for you. When the TV actually fails to boot, the reason why the vizio TV fails to boot is not because of the mainboard, but because of a faulty Google Chromecast, update that came through on the smart TV side of your television set. That's why you get the black screen death and the only way to fix it is to physically quickly press input, get it over to p. C. And then go into settings on menu and do a firmware update.

My sister just gave me a M43-C1. It had the heatsink soldered to the main board. It also did not have the blue and red LEDs installed. I used a heat gun on low on the back side of the cooler processor. Heated it to about 400F. Took about 7 minutes. Works great! Thanks! I won't even mention the smoke detector 😜

Thank you, sir! My Vizio D55u-D1 had the exact same problem. I followed your steps, heated up both processor units on the main board with a Ryobi cordless heat gun, and the TV is working great now. I did have to use a putty knife to loosen the main board with pink foam blocks from the TV chassis. I also used tinfoil to try to deflect the heat from the other parts of the main board, cutting two holes the size of the processor units. Great video - very much appreciated!

Hey! many thanks for this video. I just fixed a Vizio D50u-D1 by heating the same chip you show in the video with my rework hot air gun set to 400C for a couple of minutes. This TV would show the Vizio logo, and go off, and restart a few times. I followed your steps to check the PSU, the LED backlights, the LED board, and then went to work on the mainboard. For anyone attempting, the first time I heated that chip (same as in the video), the TV still didn't work afterwards, so I repeated the process once more. Also in my case that chip wasn't completely cold, it would warm when the TV still didn't work (confirmed with a thermal camera) but I guessed I should try resoldering it anyway, since other than that I would have to replace the board, and that fixed the TV.

Just subscribed to a great detailed video, which I just found today. 4 years ago I sent my 55” Vizio mainboard away to be refurbished for $99 and it is still working great to this day. Symptoms, back then were none of the HMDI inputs receive a signal, so no HMDI devise would work. The rabbit ears worked for local channels, and the AV or component Yellow, red and white worked for older DVD player. Had your video been available 4 years ago I would have tried your fix, since I had to take the TV apart to remove the Mainboard and send it off for refurbishing. I like how you showed how to trouble shoot using a multi-meter on DC volts. Our 42” Vizio works if you do not mind waiting 10-15 minutes for it to warm up. It comes on right away; you just cannot change anything for 10-15 minutes. No volume, up or down change, no change of TV input, etc. We have been living with this for a long time. I took it apart years ago, thinking I would find a bulging capacitor, but they all looked fine, so back together and live with problem. Any ideas?

I don't leave comments on RU-vid. However I feel like it's time to give credit when credit is due. I just finished doing this step by step and it works! Thank you for the details. I would like to point out on my smaller 43" version the heat shield was soldered on so that took some time to heat and gently pull apart.and the same putting it back on making sure it was pressing against the chips afterwards. But other then that, it 100% worked for me. Thanks again.

Many many thanks to you my friend!! Your video helped me bring a D55-E0 back from the dead. Found it had a bad power board (power light finally came on), and then I pulled out my heat gun and reseated the CPU on the mainboard. To my amazement it worked! Thank you so much for saving the day! One thing I did do on this TV (don't recall if it was in this vid) was carefully scrape off the old thermal paste, clean it up with rubbing alcohol, then add new thermal paste to the CPU before reseating the heat dispersion plate. For others watching this video-- make sure you reapply new thermal paste or you could nuke your TV.
@metatechnologist
@metatechnologist 2 года назад
Instead of using thermal paste I recommend using TIM aka Thermal Interface Material. Reason being is that thermal paste can be subject to 'thermal pumping'. When the electronics go from hot to cold parts expand and shrink. When they do this it literally squeezes the paste out. With TIM material (I call it bubblegum) it does not happen. In fact, if the TV had thermal paste in the first place this could have caused part failure as the paste was 'squeezed' out!

I was really defeated, but the next morning, woke up determined to fix it. Replaced the control board, and now it's running like new. Fast forward to this week, and as my luck has it...TV died in the middle of 1993's Malice, starring Alec Baldwin, Nicole Kidman, and Bill Pullman (even a young Gwenyth Paltrow makes an appearance!). I couldn't believe it, never had a TV die on my like that, mid scene. Anyway, I ripped that puppy off the wall and got my screwdriver. It worked, thanks for the great video! Not bad fix for a free TV, only 1080P. but great to put in a kids room. Vizio's aren't the best brand and I've ever worked on over the years but it's not the worst brand either. The brand I see with the most problems are LG and Insignia, and all the cheap Chinese brands not many people have heard of. One thing you might have done but missed is to clean the IC's off with a Q-tip and alcohol, then use new thermal grease before you put the big heat-sink back on. That old heat-sink grease is usually all dried up, and running just a few degrees cooler can save years on computers and TV's.

what are a couple good, reliable brands?
@brianwall9592
@brianwall9592 2 года назад
@@nafl350 The classic Arctic Silver 5 is still one of the best and most reliable. I've used it forever, and my temps on ancient desktops and laptops have still stayed much lower than before (applied on items when both factory-fresh and 1-5 yrs used)... Critical to apply it properly, though, do the research, do it right and it'll amaze ya... >;]

This worked for me too! I was almost ready to throw the TV away, until I found you. . My heatsink was soldered to the board, and looked like it would be very difficult to remove, so instead I applied a lot of heat directly to the heat sink over the processor and it worked like a charm. In addition, I happened to have a small USB powered fan laying around, so I cut a small hole in the back of the TV case directly over the processor that lost it's connection. Hopefully that will help to keep the temp down and our little repair will last that much longer. Thank you!

Mike, how did you get the heat sync off? Mines soldered on the rear and is a PITA!!
@mikeachtziger8898
@mikeachtziger8898 3 года назад
@@derrickdiehl9081 Mine was the same as in the video held on with plastic pins you have to squeeze with pliers to get out. It starts around the 14 minute mark in the video. You will need a small needle nose pliers to get the one inside the added heat sink on the back on a M50-c1 that is not in the video.

Great video!! Count me as a new subscriber. I'm going to try this with a D65-D2 that's showing vertical lines on the center of the screen. I have a rework station so I can isolate heat to the chip in question. What does concern me is that the manufacturer mislabeled the voltages, as you pointed out. That's a little scary, especially dealing with electricity.

@bigdog8802 thank you so much for this fix. I have looked for over a year to replace my main board which is nearly impossible. When they get in-stock they are immediately sold. Was super easy and just use my heat gun instead of a soldering station heat source. Just a small thing..my pads under the board were very sticky and didnt come off without some major care. And there are 3 of the springs that stay in place for sure.. and 3 that are removed. I know in your video you mentioned that.. and it was the same for me. Amazing video A++++++ video!
