Hello everyone! There are further methods including placing a cloth under the pot to soak up excess moisture. I didn't add this to the video because I've never had to use this method.....but it is VERY POPULAR. Thanks for watching

My pro tip (been doing it for about 5 years). Toss a couple of bunched up microfibre cloths under the pot and on top of the soil as well. Within a few hours your rags will be wet but not dripping and you can switch them out and let those ones air dry. Works great. I grabbed the ugly vibrant color cheap microfiber billion pack from the dollar store. It hasn't failed me yet! I don't bother washing between unless they seem to need it, I just hang them up and let them dry for the next time I oopsie (different soils I forget sometimes and get heavy handed). I used to basically panic and do a repot but now I literally just lift the pot and toss the microfibre under, often times right inside the decorative pot. Normal towels don't wick away the moisture the same way, paper towel doesn't either unless maybe you used an entire pack!

I should have put this into the video as well. Thanks Marisa

I keep a few water bottle caps under the pot in the drip tray, that way there is a little air getting to the bottom soil also elevating the pot encourages the water to evaporate quickly.

I also cut the bottoms of soda bottles and cut a hole in each of the little footlets on the side and slipped it on the bottoms of my terra cotta pots for my small succulents and cacti so I don't have to carry drip trays around if I move the plant. I just take it off and water the plant over the sink or bucket and place it back on after most of the dripping has subsided.

Me too! And it works great! I'll even leave them in there if I've got a smaller plant that's definitely not ready to repot, but the outer decorative pot is causing some of the leaves or stems to get stressed with those little dark marks right where they sit on the rim. Or if it's starting to make them bend or break. Just that little boost in height gives them a bit more time to get strong enough to withstand some minimal friction.

Any time I buy a plant from a big box store, they are so overwatered. I just lift the plant out and set it inside a Terra cotta pot. The pot pulls out the moisture pretty quickly. That’s my go to solution 😀

I’ve overwatered several times 🙁. What I’ve done when that happens is fold a small towel and place it in the saucer. It works great, the towel wicks the moisture out of the soil very quickly. I switch out the towel when it gets wet. Works like a charm. Looks like your method works just as well.

If there are draining holes, I just put a dry rag or layers of paper towels underneath the pot to let it soak up moisture fast. It seems to work pretty well and then I reassess to see if I need to change up the potting mix.

I bought an overwatered rescue plant (dischidia which should not ever get too wet) in the past and ended up squeezing a bit, setting on paper towels, aerating, setting in front of a fan and ultimately when the soil was still moist after a few days, I repotted. Oh, and tampons don’t really soak up moisture from the soil😂.

I put a wooden crate upside down over a heat register and a large plastic tray to protect the more sensitive leaves from the hot airflow. I keep a few plants on there full time, but it's also handy for the odd cases of overwatering. Kind of acts like a seed mat would.

All the tips are amazing. I was wondering though, does poking holes really help? I mean sure, you're creating avenues for the air to reach in, but at the same time, you are compacting the rest of the soil. Isn't that what we don't want?
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Год назад
I will poke holes mainly around the edges of the pot. Now I have no scientific evidence to back this up lol I'm just going off what seems practical.....but I get what you are saying. I just want some air flowing lower in the pot

I just got a similar syngonium, I'm not sure if its a wendlandii or rayii but it's been really tough for me to read its cues for needing water because the leaves are so thin. I have a syngonium frosted heart that gets very obviously droopy when it needs water, but I can't really tell on the wendlandii. I'm going to have to go on pot weight and switch to a clear pot+cache pot when its time to repot, I think. Thank you always for the tips!

This hack I’ve used myself,I know it sounds Icky, cheap “ new” tampons,I know right!, I heard it somewhere on the net,stick couple in and they absorb so much of the excess water,as well as old kitchen sponges that I sit the pot on and what Jeff has already said,air movement.Desperate times call for desperate measures 😅 it saved my plant! I don’t have that problem now as I use well draining soil!

It is now April 19, 2024 and last week I potted a rooted plumeria I had ordered from J&J Plumerias (a 'Teresa Wilder' cultivar), into an appropriately sized terra cotta pot. I guess I got lucky, as they sent me a 3-4' tall plant with that had already branched 3 times with a few small leaves. (I have to assume these leaves were small due to the plant coming out of winter hibernation). I used some Fertilome cactus/succulent mix with a bit of added perlite for extra drainage. Yesterday I may inadvertently watered it a bit too much. It's not even hot outside yet (to aid evaporation) and I don't have access to a fan, so I used the identification marker, which has a thin, approximently 1/4 inch wide x 6 inch long plastic projection (used to stick into the soil) to poke deep holes in the soil around the trunk to expose more soil and to help it air out. Hopes this works. Thanks for posting. 🪴🌴🌵
